Does Soy Sauce Need To Be Refrigerated

Many people believe that soy sauce needs to be refrigerated in order to remain fresh. Some argue that soy sauce can become sour and strong if it isnt refrigerated, while others say that it would be difficult to

store soy sauce without it becoming sour. We decided to test this hypothesis by taking a look at how well our two favorite brands, soy sauce from Japan and American soy sauce, held up after being refrigerated for two months.

Soy Sauce Vs Teriyaki Sauce Comparison

When you visit a Japanese restaurant, you have an array of different seasonings and sauces to consider. Two of the most popular options they provide are teriyaki and soy sauce. But what is the difference between the two? Can they be used interchangeably?

Although you may not realize it, there are several differences between the two, including the flavor. A lot of confusion lies in the similarities that they share in appearance. The two sauces can often look as though they are the same product, as they are the same color of brown and a similar consistency. However, that is where the similarities mostly end.

Lets take a deeper dive into a comparison of teriyaki vs. soy sauce and whether or not you can use them as substitutions for each other.

All About The Japanese Sauce That Loves Chicken

Kikkoman® Teriyaki Marinade & Sauce, 20 oz

If you’re going to, uh, chicken out and order teriyaki instead of sushi, you should at least educate yourself on what makes that sauce so magical. Magical enough to want chicken instead of eating sushi with everyone else, at least.

Teriyaki is the Japanese term for meat that has been marinated in teriyaki sauce, then broiled or grilled over coals. Nowadays, the word is used to describe any food marinated in, or served with, a version of this as-yet defined sauce. This epic burger, for instance, is a great example.

Onto the lesson. Teriyaki sauce has four main components: soy sauce, sake , sugar and ginger. It’s more or less your basic Asian seasoning/marinade. Soak meat, vegetables, fish or tofu in for at least half an hour before cooking. If you decide to reduce the mixture, it will get thick, glossy and sticky more like a sauce and better for topping or serving on the side.

Done right, it’s enough to make us put down the wasabi. Done poorly, it might as well be a frozen dinner. Or a sweet onion chicken teriyaki.

    What Are The Origins

Although indisputably a Japanese dish steeped in east Asian flavours, the dish is more prevalent in the west than on home soil. In fact, when the name was coined in 17th-century Japan, it was because of a grilling method popular at the time rather than a sauce. Teri refers to the shine the glaze gives the food, while yaki is a nod to the method of cooking.

The origins of teriyaki as a sauce are more commonly attributed to the Japanese population of Hawaii in the 1960s, who paired the teriyaki cooking style and soy sauce from home with the abundant sweet pineapple juice to master the distinctive marinade. Teriyaki, of course, has its place in Japanese homes and restaurants amidst other sweet, sticky soy glazes and sauces like the Chinese hoisin, oyster sauce, plum or barbecue, but it is predominantly paired with fish in east Asia rather than the beef or chicken dishes more popular in the West.
