There are two popular methods to cooking a brisket. Texas style means that you smoke the meat for a long period of time. Braised brisket is another popular option, which involves cooking at a low temperature, and because it’s usually cooked with vegetables, absorbs the moisture from them.

What’s The Difference Between Texas Vs Kansas City Vs Carolina Bbq Sauce
Barbecue is a big deal in each of these parts of America, and they all have their specific style of sauce. While Texas barbecue sauce is thin and beefy tasting with a little spice, Kansas City sauce is known for its sweetness and thick consistency. On the other hand, North Carolina sauce, packs a bit of tang from the vinegar, making it ideal for pairing with fatty meat such as pork.

What Is Kansas City
Generally, Kansas City-style BBQ sauce is a tomato-based sauce that gets its tang from an acidic component like apple cider vinegar and its sweetness from brown sugar. This style of BBQ sauce will almost always have a bit of heat that you will notice at the end, usually from chili powder, red pepper flakes, or cayenne pepper.

This may not be a fully homemade BBQ sauce recipe, but I think it still counts if I make it my own. Sometimes I just feel like store-bought BBQ sauces are missing something, so why not just add in those extra flavors myself?
Starting with my personal favorite BBQ sauce, I just mixed in some Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and a couple other special ingredients to get the exact flavor I want. I love using this as a brisket sauce because I think it just complements beef brisket so well.

Theres not much to this once youve got the ingredients down. Just combine everything in a saucepan, bring it to a boil and stir. Once its done, let it cool before storing. Pour it into a jar and keep it in the refrigerator until youre ready to use it.
This recipe makes about 1 2/3 cups of sauce. You can easily double it if you need more!

Tips For This Pressure Cooker Brisket Recipe:
- For the rub spices, if you want to be extra accurate on the measurements, keep in mind that spices have different weights. To simplify, as we did in this recipe, so you can always account for 3 grams per teaspoon.
- For an even more flavorful pressure cooker brisket, marinate with the rub overnight .
- In the recipe, we note that you can use water or unsalted chicken stock for cooking. Denise explains that the briskets natural juices make for a fantastic base, so cooking with water in lieu of chicken stock works just fine.
- Denise suggests using an Instant Pot for this brisket bbq recipe as it turns out the juiciest meat because the brisket cooks in its own juices and not in dry heat . It gives you the ultimate rich and smoky flavor. In the Instant Pot, the spices and flavor all penetrate the meat.
- This brisket bbq recipe is also fast and easy. The meat cooks perfectly tender and it gives you the base for the absolute best homemade bbq sauce for brisket.

How To Cook Brisket In A Slow Cooker
I love using my slow cooker during the holidays because not only does it free up the oven, but the results are wonderfully tender and every bit as delicious as oven results.
Making and serving beef brisket on the same day can be difficult, however, unless you plan ahead because the brisket requires a good 8-10 hours of cooking time. That is why I like to prepare my brisket the day before.
To do this, we first make our brisket by rubbing it in our custom spice mix that elevates this bbq beef brisket to restaurant quality. The Spice Rub is an intoxicating blend of paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, chipotle powder, onion powder, garlic powder, dried thyme, salt and pepper. The rub is not too spicy, not too sweet, but just plain flavorful.
Next, we oven sear the beef brisket by simply baking it at 425 for 30 minutes. This seals in the spices/juices, renders some of the fat and adds a depth and complexity of flavor that cant be achieved any other way.
Meanwhile, we whisk up our tantalizing homemade barbecue sauce that I first used in my Slow Cooker Barbecue Ribs and my Crockpot BBQ Chicken. This Barbecue Sauce is a reader favorite and the only barbecue sauce I will ever use, according to many. So while you can use your own bottled barbecue sauce, I highly recommend this version. It is sweet and tangy and just right.
Any way you serve it, this comforting, convenient, luxurious beef brisket will have you and all your guests oohing and ahhhing for more!

Slow Cooker Beef Brisket Ingredient Substitutions
There are a few ingredient swaps you can make for the homemade bbq sauce, if needed.
- If you cant find blackberry preserves, Ive had readers comment they have also used strawberry preserves, raspberry preserves, fig preserves and apple jam with success.
- You can use any brown sugar you have on hand light, medium or dark.
- You can use granulated sugar or honey if thats all you have on hand but, in this case, I would reduce the sugar by a tablespoon or two and add extra molasses in its place. You can also use a blend of sweeteners.
