VARIATIONS ON HEALTHY BBQ SAUCE

  • Maple Syrup BBQ Sauce: One of many popular ways to prepare BBQ Sauce is with maple syrup as one of the sweeteners. Instead of using the brown sugar in this recipe you can use 2 tablespoons maple syrup and 2 tablespoons molasses to give a rich and sweet flavor.
  • Sugar Free/ Keto BBQ Sauce: While this BBQ sauce already has low-sugar, you can make a completely sugar free BBQ sauce recipe thats Keto-friendly. Remove the brown sugar from the recipe. You can use a variety of sugar substitutes like Splenda, Lakanto or Sucralose, but Sukrin All-Natural Brown Sugar Alternative is probably the closest youll get in taste. Its made primarily of erythritol and has a similar deep taste to the regular sugar, so you can get an authentic taste for your sugar-free BBQ sauce. To be completely Keto, youll also need to remove the Worcestershire sauce because it has 1.7 g sugar per tablespoon making it non-keto. Finally, youll need to replace the balsamic vinegar for a sugar-free vinegar.

Can you show us how to modify this recipe and eliminate the salt? Im looking for a low sugar and low or no sodium bbq sauce recipe. Im more concerned about the sodium than the sugar.

Tuesday 24th of December 2019

Hi John,These are the ingredients in this recipe that I am aware of that contain sodium: tomato paste , Worcestershire sauce , chili powder and of course the salt itself.I believe if you omit the salt and buy the reduced or no sodium tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce, you will reduce the sodium content in the recipe greatly. Please know though, that I am not a medical doctor, certified dietitian or nutritionist so it would be irresponsible of me to give any medical advice. While I have not tested this recipe with the salt omitted I think it should be okay. If you try it out be sure to come back and leave a comment and let me know how it turned out for you.I hope this is helpful to you and you are able to find a bbq sauce that you enjoy!~Joy

I dont have any white wine vinegar. Can I add more Apple cider vinegar instead? Or do I need to just wait till I can pick some up?

Adjusting The Sugar Content

Sugar Free Low Carb BBQ Sauce Recipe

This low sugar barbecue sauce recipe contains about half as much sugar as most homemade BBQ sauce recipes out there! Whether you use coconut sugar or brown sugar, the result is equally delicious. If youd like to adjust the sugar content of your sauce:

  • Use up to double the sugar content for a sweeter sauce.
  • Start with just 3 Tbsp coconut or brown sugar and sweeten to taste for a less-sweet sauce.
  • Choose a ketchup with your preferred sugar content. Classic Heinz ketchup contains 4g of sugars per tablespoon. I like to use True Made Foods Vegetable Ketchup, which contains 2g of sugar per tablespoon. You can also find other low sugar, sugar free, or even paleo & whole30 ketchup varieties if desired!

Bring all ingredients to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook 15-20 minutes uncovered.Stir regularly, until sauce is reduced.

How Much Sodium In Pork Ribs

Typical sodium amount most recipes 1700+ mg
Sodium per serving for this recipe 280 mg

The sodium in the actual ribs themselves is on the lower side as they only contain 70 milligrams in a 4 ounce serving. It is typically the rib dry rub and BBQ sauce that is slathered on the meat that makes the sodium content soar.

Finding the total sodium content for this rib recipe was a little difficult as the nutrition calculator was coming up with over 1000 mg sodium per serving. That was obviously way off for calculating just the meat.

So doing it by hand using the meat nutrition label, the weight of the meat and adding in the rub and Low Sodium BBQ Sauce I came up with roughly 280 mg of sodium for your meal Serving size = 1 lb. or approximately 1/3 rack of ribs. But only when you use my rib dry rub and sauce any additional sodium will be extremely minimal.

Check out most typical recipes online and you will see sodium bombs at over 1700 mg per serving! Pre-packaged samples from the store are close to 500+ mg and who knows how much youre getting at your local BBQ joint.

Yet with this recipe youre still getting all the goodness and incredible fall off the bone taste. With my spice dry rub and if you choose to add my Low Sodium Barbecue Sauce, you will be wolfing these down without having to worry about sodium.

Ingredients In Traditional Bbq Sauce

My first thought was to run to the store to grab a jar of BBQ sauce, but I quickly realized that healthier bottled BBQ sauce is kind of hard to find. Most store-bought sauces are loaded with sugar and some brands like Sweet Baby Rays still use high fructose corn syrup and its the FIRST ingredient!! Theyre also packed with a hefty dose of sodium and added preservatives. Not real food or EBF friendly!

Ultimately I said no thanks to the bottled sauces and grabbed ingredients to make my own healthy BBQ sauce at home instead.

I so love to have homemade, healthy mixes and condiments in my kitchen.

Low Carb No Sugar Homemade BBQ Sauce is easy and guess what! It tastes just like BBQ sauce!

I have tried quite a few BBQ sauce recipes and have often been disappointed. That is, until I tried this one.

I was encouraged when it smelled so much like the real thing as it cooked but I didnt want to be too hopeful. It turns out that the hope was well founded.

THIS is the recipe I have been looking for!

I found it here and made a few changes.

Instead of using whole garlic and onion, I use powder. It is lower carb and easier, not to mention we wouldnt want the chunks in our sauce.

So many recipes say No Sugar but what they really mean is no white sugar and they add honey, maple syrup, or artificial sugar.

Even the healthy versions have sugar of some kind added and that is not low carb.

This recipe REALLY has NO SUGAR . You wont get away from that in a bbq sauce made with tomatoes, unfortunately.

The tomatoes will add about 1 gram of sugars to each Tablespoon of bbq sauce.

Dont ask me how, but the added sugar is not needed in this recipe. You can thank me lateror now, that is fine.

And the best part about that is that it is still wonderful BBQ sauce!

Ingredients In Low Sugar Bbq Sauce

Tomato sauce – The base for any BBQ sauce. Just a can of pureed tomatoes. If you only have tomato paste, you can combine 1 can of tomato paste with 1½ cups of water to make a tomato sauce substitute. If you are feeling super ambitious, you could make your own tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes. Here‘s a great recipe for that.

Ketchup – More tomatoes, but with some additional flavor. Looks for one without high fructose corn syrup. That’s nasty stuff!

Apple cider vinegar – Adds the classic tanginess any BBQ sauce needs.

Coconut sugar – My chosen natural sugar, but you could use honey, maple syrup or brown sugar. Now, I’ve labelled this “low sugar” because it has much less sugar than other homemade BBQ sauce recipes, but is by no means a sugar-free BBQ sauce.

Spices and seasonings – Small amounts of many ingredients that come together to create a delicious BBQ sauce! We use onion, garlic, smoked paprika, chili powder, dijon mustard, liquid smoke , Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper.
