  • What Are Caramel Iced Coffees At Starbucks

An iced caramel coffee at Starbucks is any coffee with added caramel flavor. The flavor comes from caramel syrup or sauce, depending on the recipe.

Its one of the most popular ingredients at Starbucks and is often requested as an add-on.

Caramel frappuccino put the spotlight on caramel flavoring in iced coffees. For reference, frappuccinos were introduced back in the 1990s.

Many new drinks that included caramel ensued, but most of them were hot versions. Frappuccinos traced the path for the iced coffee and caramel cross. Today you can experiment with caramel shots in any iced coffee.

    What Is Caramel Sauce

Caramel sauce is a delicious topping for various coffee drinks. Its made from sugar and water that are heated until they turn into a thick, amber-colored syrup. Then, some cream is added to give it its characteristic smooth texture.

The key to making good caramel sauce is to cook the sugar until it turns a deep amber color.

This deep amber color will give the sauce its characteristic flavor and sweetness. If the sugar is cooked too long, it will turn into burnt sugar and taste bitter instead of sweet.

Below, youll find the small list of ingredients needed to make this caramel sauce and a step-by-step guide, so you can start making this caramel sauce at home.

    Other Warm Weather Considerations

1.How heat sensitive are your items? While exposure to high temperatures affects all food products to some degree, most candy is relatively stable. Some types of candy can melt, including chocolate, caramels, marshmallows, and gelatin-based gummies. The product page of each heat-sensitive item includes a Warm Weather Shipping notice so youll know which ones are at higher risk of melting.

Chocolate is the most heat sensitive. Foil-wrapped chocolates and candy-coated chocolates are more sturdy and hold their shape better than other chocolate types. Candy-coated items may crack and become a little greasy after exposure to heat. Other chocolates may get soft and lose their shape even if they dont completely liquify.

Note: Temperature fluctuations naturally cause chocolate to bloom, where the cocoa butter separates resulting in changes in color and texture. Bloomed chocolate is still edible but may be less attractive. It often looks like it has a white coating, which is just the cocoa butter .

Gummies made with gelatin will completely liquify in extreme heat , re-solidifying when cool into a single bag-shaped gummy!

Gummy-type candy made with pectin is not heat sensitive. Its easy to tell the difference, because the pectin candies are sugar-coated, while the gelatin-based gummies have a smooth surface.

made with gelatin can melt together at very high temperatures. If youre using them for rice crispy treats, this may not be an issue!

    How To Make Caramel Syrup

Cooking up a batch of homemade syrup is simple. All you need is a pan with a heavy bottom and a wooden spoon. Use the longest wooden spoon you own because you dont want to get any melted sugar on your skin. A hot sugar burn isnt fun.

Be prepared to stir the sugar constantly. Sometimes when we cook we dont need to be actively involved with the process. This is one of those recipes where you need to be actively involved the whole time. Dont walk away, burnt sugar isnt pleasant.

Start by combining the water with the sugar in a small saucepan into the mixture that looks like wet sand. You may need a little more or water depending on several factors.

When the sugar mixture is at the right consistency, place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat. Give the sugar mixture one good stir and shake the saucepan until it is level.

Bring the sugar mixture to a boil. At this point, you need to pay careful attention to keep the sugar from burning. Try to avoid stirring because excess stirring can cause the sugar to crystalize.

Continue to cook the sugar mixture until it reaches the color you want. Never leave the saucepan unwatched. The sugar mixture can go from pale to burned in a minute or two.

This caramel syrup tastes just as good as any that you will buy.

How To Make An Iced Caramel Latte

    Step 1 Coffee

Pour the coffee into a glass over ice. Make sure it is room temperature or colder, this helps avoid the ice melting immediately. My coffee was still a bit warm when I went to make this for I popped it in the freezer for about 10-12 minutes, checking it fairly regularly to make sure that it had not frozen.

    Step 2 Caramel

Pour caramel syrup into the coffee.

    Step 3 Cream

Add cream to the iced coffee. I used half and half but any creamer or milk will work.

A Note On The Difference Between Caramel Syrup And Caramel Sauce:

So, Starbucks and every other fancy coffee place have two different things going on syrups and sauces.

The syrups are the generally clear liquids that you see in large bottles with pumps on top. These pumps of flavor are the backbone of all of the flavored drinks.

If you watch closely, these pumps of flavor are usually the first thing the barista will add to your cup after you order.

But then, once the drink is complete, for the final garnish , they are using something different, which is a sauce.

In the photos in this post, caramel syrup was used to make the flavored iced coffee, and caramel sauce was used as the garnish on top.

I have a homemade caramel sauce included in my apple and pecan tart recipe if youd like to try your hand at that.

But I often use a store bought sauce , and I like that just as well.

    Salted Caramel Iced Coffee

Im just going to put this out there. Im a coffee snob. Its something I know and I own it. I dont like burnt coffee. I dont like $6 coffee drinks that are loaded with sugar and tear up my intestines but have no depth. Therefore, I prefer to make my own coffee at home. If you feel the same way, or just want to save $1000 a year by making your own coffee drinks at home, this Salted Caramel Iced Coffee is a great place to start!

For iced coffee, I brew a pot of very strong coffee using this Chemex pour-over coffeemaker. I have the 5-cup Chemex but they have several different sizes and options to choose from. I prefer this way of brewing because it removes oils and bitterness and results in a pure, flavorful cup of coffee. Its honestly the only way I can drink my coffee black.

However, if you dont own a Chemex, or you arent a coffee snob, feel free to use whatever type of coffeemaker you have. Just make sure its strong. Then, let the coffee cool and pour into a sealed glass jar and put it in the fridge to use tomorrow morning. I know its hard to wait, but it will be worth it!

Remember that Salted Caramel Sauce we made last week? Pull that out of the fridge and microwave it for about 45 seconds and stir. We want it smooth and liquidy again.

Next, using a spoon, drizzle the caramel around the outside of the glass.

Now, add 1 cup cold coffee and add ice. Stir and serve! Or drink.

    Enjoy!
