Processed Meat And Nitrites

GOUT, Causes, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment.

Nitrites are a common ingredient added to processed meat. This is what gives it its pink color and salty flavor. In addition, it prevents bacteria growth and cuts food poisoning risk. Its the main ingredient thats causing these diseases associated with processed meat. Scientists found that nitrites make meat more carcinogenic and it may be responsible for the formation of cancer-causing compounds in the body. The real risk, however, comes when nitrites interact with the compounds in meat and when it is cooked in high heat. This forms the compound called nitrosamines which can cause cancer.

Dont be fooled by those marketing labels either. If a processed meat is labeled as natural or unprocessed, it may just be that they used vegetable powders like celery salt to preserve the product and prevent foodborne illnesses. The naturally-occurring nitrates in vegetables are inherently not bad but once added to meat, it converts into nitrite which can be harmful for the body. This still puts you at risk for certain types of cancer.

The scary part is that the U.S.D.A allows this. So as long as the meat has not been cured with nitrites or nitrates, it is legal for manufacturers to label their product as uncured. Meat companies are aware of the bad rep their products get so they add labels like no nitrites added, no artificial preservatives, or uncured to put you at ease.

Alcohol And Heart Rate: Other Risks

Alcohol can also make your heart beat faster, regardless of how much alcohol you consume, says Guy L. Mintz, MD, director of cardiovascular health and lipidology at Northwell Healthâs Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital in Manhasset, New York. Your heart rate, or pulse, is the number of times your heart beats per minute. Elevated heart rate may travel with elevated blood pressure, he says.

This increase in heart rate can also lead to âholiday heart syndrome,â Dr. Mintz says. âIn the 24 to 48 hours after you drink, you can experience irregular heartbeats.â This was first noticed in emergency rooms after New Yearâs Eve, a night known for celebratory and sometimes excessive alcohol consumption.

There are other ways that drinking can affect your heart. âIt has calories, and calories can cause weight gain and obesity, which will lead to high blood pressure,â Dr. Mintz says.

To lower any risks associated with overdoing it, the AHA suggests limiting your alcohol consumption to no more than:

  • 2 drinks a day for men.
  • 1 drink a day for women.

This is considered moderate alcohol intake. And what you drink matters. âWine and spirits like whiskey or vodka are OK,â Dr. Mintz says. âAnything but beer is OK, as beer comes with a salt load that can cause high blood pressure and is high in calories.â

Signs And Symptoms Of Gout

Gout typically becomes symptomatic suddenly without warning. It frequently affects the large joint of the foot such as metatarsal joint of the big toe and knee joint, but can also attack the ankles, elbows, fingers, and wrists. It usually progresses through various stages, and its signs and symptoms are thus are experienced differently according to the stage. These include

Asymptomatic Hyperuricemia

It is essential to recognize that although almost all patients with gout have high levels of uric acid in the blood , not all patients with hyperuricemia develop gout. Before having their first gout attack, most patients will have raised levels of uric acid in the blood for many years. However, there are no definitive guidelines for treatment during this period, especially in the absence of apparent signs or symptoms of gout. This stage of gout with active uric acid in blood but no clinical signs is termed âasymptomatic hyperuricemia.â

The risk of an acute gouty attack increases with elevated uric acid levels. But, interestingly, many patients can have attacks with ânormalâ levels of uric acid, while others will never get an attack despite high levels of uric acid. This can be attributed to genetic predisposition and other socio-environmental factors.

Foods With A High Glycemic Index

Foods to avoid with gout

The glycemic index measures how specific foods affect blood sugar levels.

Some carbohydrate foods with a higher GI score can spike blood sugar and contribute to weight gain â a risk factor for gout.

A found that eating lower GI foods lowered uric acid, which may help prevent gout flares.

People can help to manage gout by avoiding or limiting the following high GI foods:

  • refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, pasta, and rice
  • cakes, biscuits, cookies, pancakes, and sweet treats
  • higher GI vegetables and fruits, such as potatoes, bananas, and watermelon
  • low-fiber, high-sugar breakfast cereals, such as puffed rice, cornflakes, and frosted flakes

Processed Meat Increases Many Cancer Risks

If youre a regular person who eats a daily breakfast consisting of bacon and other processed meats, now might be a good time to cut down on that. Processed meat has been associated with various cancers including stomach, colorectal, and breast cancer.

Here are more facts about processed meat, cancer, and other diseases:

-Consuming 50g of processed meat daily can increase bowel cancer by 18%.

-Eating one portion of processed meat everyday would put you at 42% more risk for developing coronary heart disease and 19% more risk for diabetes compared to someone who didnt eat processed meat every day.

-The Cancer Research Centre in the UK said that if people in Britain didnt eat processed or red meat, the incidences of cancer would decrease by 8,800. That is more than the number of people in Britain who die from road accidents.

-Women who consumed 9g of bacon a day increased their risk for developing breast cancer.

-In 2013, it was found that a diet high in processed meats accounts for an estimated 526,000 deaths due to cardiovascular disease, 84,000 for diabetes, and 34,000 for bowel cancer.

-A study done by British researchers Peter Magee and John Barnes found that rats who were exposed to dimethyl nitrosamine regularly developed tumours in the liver, stomach, oesophagus, intestines, brain, bladder, kidneys, and lungs.

Other Ways To Relieve Symptoms Of Gout

One myth is that if someone is suffering from gout, then they’re probably not eating right. But gout is the result of a mix of both genetics and environmental factors.

“It’s not that their husband or spouse is cheating on their diet, they aren’t sneaking food that they shouldn’t eat, it’s not all diet,” says Dr. Robert Keenan, a rheumatologist at Duke University Health Facility.

The pain from gout can also be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs , like Aspirin or Ibuprofen and by losing weight, if you’re overweight.

The important thing to remember for people who suffer from gout is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. By watching purine-rich food intake, eating more vegetables and less unprocessed foods, watching your weight, and exercising more, gout can be managed effectively.

What Is Pathogenic Dampness

What Really Happens To Your Body When You Eat Hot Sauce

Chinese medicine considers dampness to be a very common pathogenic factor of the body that can cause illness. It comes from the environment especially when it is the wet season with continuous rain, cloud and fog. When these conditions last for too long or occur very often, it will affect the body by moving the dampness into the body. When the dampness affects the body it will affect primarily the Spleen and its function.

In Chinese medicine, the Spleen is important for metabolism of food and transportation of fluid. If the Spleen function is affected a person may experience the following symptoms:

  • lack of energy and lethargy
  • light sleep
  • full, bloated and heavy feeling of the stomach
  • sluggish bowel movement or loose stools
  • feeling of heaviness in the head
  • heaviness in the body, stiff neck and shoulders, arm and legs.

For some people, if the symptoms above are not controlled some may develop under-active thyroid, weight gain, diabetes and high blood pressure.

So if you are staying in a very damp and cold place or your body is affected by dampness, I suggest that during your treatment you can eat a certain amount of chilli with your food, which can help to clear the dampness and cold from the body. It can help to relieve the symptoms and prevent further pathogenic effects.

Potential For Lead Poisoning

What may be the most frightening and unexpected possible side effect of hot sauce is the risk of lead poisoning.

Because this food was previously consumed in minute quantities by only a sliver of the American population, the FDA never instituted lead standards for hot sauce like they did for candies, dried fruit, juice, and numerous other foods.

If some manufacturers were held to the same 0.1 ppm lead standard as candy, their products would be banned for sale and need to be recalled.

A study found that 88% of imported hot sauce brands tested contained detectable levels of lead and a number of them were above 0.1 ppm, which is the maximum limit for candies.

The 25 brands and flavors in the study were purchased in Clark County, Nevada at retail stores. These products were brands that were manufactured in Mexico and South America.

Because there are no enforceable lead limit standards for hot sauce, believe it or not this is believed to be the first investigation done and it didnt even occur until 2013!

Even though most of the sauces contained some lead, this should not overly concern you.

The fact is that lead and other toxic heavy metals are ubiquitous in the environment. The question is not whether or not theyre in the foods you eat, because they are. Rather its how much they contain that is the question.

Where was this lead poisoning coming from? Thats unknown. Theories cited by the scientists include:

Using Tart Cherry Juice For Gout

Tart cherry juice may help decrease uric acid levels and inflammation in gout. Research is limited, with often small numbers of study participants and short-term follow-up.

Nevertheless, a 2019 review of six studies that looked at the effect of cherry juice or cherry extract intake on gout concluded that cherry intake was associated with a reduced risk of gout attacks. Researchers did note that larger, more long-term studies are needed to clarify this association.

When choosing tart cherry juice, be sure to look for unsweetened varieties to help reduce the amount of added sugar in your diet.

Processed Meat Is Associated With Unhealthy Habits

It may sound weird but theres actually a link between the consumption of processed meats and unhealthy habits. It is not uncommon for a processed meat eater to smoke or drink. These are the same people who also eat less fruits and vegetables. A combination of these bad habits lead to chronic diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and stomach cancer.

What Is Uric Acid

Uric acid is a waste byproduct of purine breakdown in the body. Purines are naturally produced in the body, as well as found in some foods. As purines are broken down, uric acid is created. Normally uric acid is either reabsorbed in the body or excreted via the urine and feces.

When there are more purines in the body than it can process, uric acid builds up in the bloodstream. This is called hyperuricemia. Hyperuricemia can cause gout and/or kidney stones in some people, while others have no signs or symptoms at all.

Verywell / Alexandra Gordon

Treatment for gout often includes medications, diet modification, and lifestyle changes, such as managing weight and quitting smoking. The foods you eat can have a direct impact on gout flares.

During a gout attack, modifying your diet may help decrease the length of the flare. Continuing to follow a gout-friendly diet, specifically a low-purine diet, may help prevent the risk of future gout attacks up to five fold.

A Good Diet For Gout Should Not Include Soft Drinks Or Fruit Juice

Added sugar is a big problem in the modern diet.

Generally speaking, the sugar that is added to our food and drink products are 50% glucose and 50% fructose.

While glucose molecules are metabolised in the cell, fructose is metabolised in the liver. Further explanation is out of the scope of this article, but they behave very differently in the body.

Fructose intake, and not glucose intake, is strongly linked with gout.

Soft drinks and fruit juices tend to have the greatest amount of added sugar, and therefore the greatest amount of added fructose.

In fact, gout occurrence in the US has risen in line with fructose consumption since 1970 .

In a large study of over 46,000 men, researches found that two or more sugar-sweetened soft drinks a day was associated with an 85% increased risk of gout .

The largest consumers of sugar-sweetened soft drinks actually had a risk of gout comparable to the risk seen with three to five servings of alcohol.

Unfortunately the researchers did not account for family history of gout, which may or may not have changed their findings somewhat.

The strange thing out of all this, however, is that soft drinks dont typically contain purines.

Fructose is thought to be the culprit linking added sugars with gout. It appears to share the same mechanism as alcohol: fructose accelerates the breakdown of purine-containing nucleotides like ATP. This in turn drives up uric acid levels 90120-5/abstract” rel=”nofollow”> 13, 14, 15).

The Cause Of Gout Is More Than Just Diet

What’s The Best Hot Sauce? (Taste Test)

While diet is critical, dont overlook other important factors that affect gout. These include family history, sleep apnoea, and lack of physical exercise to name a few.

Further discussion of best treatment for gout is outside the scope of this article. But there are foods thought to be protective namely dairy, cherries, and coffee, in decreasing order of evidence.

And as much as I prefer focusing on what you should eat to prevent health scares, there are just so many clear trigger foods for gout.

Its important to deal with these factors first and foremost.

Organ Meats Are Extremely High In Purines And Should Also Be Avoided

Organ meats, known as Offal, contain by far the most purines of any food in the human diet.

The most common forms of offal in the Western diet include liver , brain, heart, kidneys, and a mixture called Pâté.

Below is the purine content of a handful of foods. Note this is just an example Ive selected, and you can find much more extensive lists on Goutpal or here.

Purine Content of Food :

Consider that values listed are per 100 grams, so portion sizes must be taken into account Meat portions we eat tend to be heaviest.

Previous studies have not differentiated between intake of conventional meat and offal, so recommendations have to be the same. Given the strong link between meat intake and gout which is based on purine content alone offal should definitely be avoided too.

Somewhat contradictory to the purine-gout theory, consumption of purine-rich vegetables is not associated with an increased risk of gout .

Researchers speculate this could be due to a lower bioavailability of purines in vegetabes, as well as other nutrients which may offset the harmful effects of their purines.

Summary: Organ meats are some of the highest purine foods and should be completely avoided if you suffer gout attacks.

What Condiments Are Bad For Gout

Even seafood like anchovies which are in many pasta sauce recipes and often in Caesar salad dressing can contribute to gout flare-ups. High-fructose corn syrup: This additive is present in a number of sugary drinks. It is in sodas, juices, candy, and even condiments like ketchup and barbecue sauce.
