Sweet and sour chicken is a popular Chinese dish that consists of a breaded chicken that’s usually deep-fried in oil until crispy. The chicken is topped with a sweet and sour sauce and mixed with peppers, onions and pineapple. Traditionally, green peppers are used, however red or orange peppers can be substituted.

This sweet and sour chicken recipe is 100% gluten free. The recipe uses tamari, which is a version of gluten free soy sauce. All other ingredients should be naturally gluten free, however always double-check the label!

There is no flour involved in this recipe, which makes it gluten free. The chicken is coated with corn starch, which helps make it crispy all while avoiding any added gluten.

It may seem like there are a lot of steps to this recipe, however, it really doesnt take all that long to put together.

Ingredients For Sweet And Sour Pork:

Pork: Pork tenderloin, eggs, and gluten-free all-purpose flour are the ingredients we need for the breaded pork portion of this recipe. The pork gets chopped into chunks, then dredged in beaten eggs and sprinkled with flour so that we can pan-fry it for the most amazing crisp. You can also use regular all-purpose flour if you arent gluten-free, or tapioca flour if you are grain-free .

Stir Fry: Avocado oil, onion, bell pepper, and garlic. These vibrant, flavorful veggies add freshness and flavor to the meal.

Sweet and Sour Sauce: honey, rice vinegar, tomato paste, liquid aminos, and sriracha make up this simple sweet and sour sauce. You have a few options for replacements here! You can use pure maple syrup instead of honey, ketchup instead of tomato paste, and/or soy sauce or coconut aminos instead of liquid aminos.

Paleo Sweet And Sour Pork:

Looking to make this recipe paleo? No sweat! Simply use tapioca flour instead of gluten-free all-purpose flour, cider vinegar instead of rice vinegar, and coconut aminos instead of liquid aminos. If you use tapioca flour, be sure to pan-fry the pork immediately after tossing it with tapioca flour or the pieces of pork will stick together.

How To Make Gluten Free Sweet And Sour Chicken

Making gluten free sweet and sour chicken looks lengthy but actually the whole thing can be done in half an hour.

The recipe involves two steps – making the battered chicken, and then cooking it up with the veg and the sauce.

Making gluten free battered chicken is actually relatively simple and can be done using a deep fat fryer or in a pan.

Once the chicken has been cooked, let it drain off on some kitchen towel once you whip up the sauce.

Then it’s simply a case of frying the veg, adding the sauce and then stirring in the cooked chicken pieces.

You can mix the veg up as much as you like but I just love the colours of the red and green peppers – and the delightful crunch!

And of course the pineapple chunks are completely optional.

I know for a fact my other half will sit and painstakingly pick all of these out, but I adore pineapple chunks in sweet and sour sauce so I added them in!

Of course, this is just an overview – keep scrolling for the full recipe card with a more detailed method for you.
