Sweet Baby Rays recently released two flavors of Rays No Sugar Added barbecue sauce, Original and Hickory.

Rays No Sugar Added offers a signature sweet, smoky and tangy flavor profile while delivering 1g sugar and 1g net carbs per serving.

Weve landed on a No Sugar Added recipe thats gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, keto-friendly and actually worth eating, said Tom Murphy, VP of brand marketing for Sweet Baby Rays. While other low-sugar and sugar-free sauces deliver runny texture and synthetic flavors, the Rays recipe was forged in the grill pits of Sweet Baby Rays using naturally sweet U.S.-grown tomatoes. Its perfect for brushing on ribs, coating on chicken or dipping tenders.

The new barbecue sauces are sweetened with Allulose, which is a naturally occurring low-calorie sweetener. According to licensed nutritionist Danielle Shea Tan, CNS, MS, CHHC, Allulose has shown to have little-to-no effect on blood glucose or insulin levels.

A Healthy Alternative 7 Sugar

  • 1Share

I have a confession. Im addicted to barbecue meats and the sauce must come correct or dont come at all. I have tried a lot of sauces in the past and these days, I am searching for ones without added sugar to lower my daily sugar intake. I came up with seven tasty selections.

So, lets kick off summer with my reviews and rankings of sugar-free BBQ sauces. I am featuring seven store-bought products that are available at major grocery chains or on Amazon and range in price from about $5 to $12.

Focusing mainly on original flavors to keep it simple, I ate a dollop of each from a spoon and evaluated each based on the smell, thickness and taste. I fancied all the condiments individually however, next to their competitors, however, some fell short with my assistant agreeing for the most part.

Browse the list below and pick one or more to try and enjoy your own taste test at home.

  • Lillies Q Zero Sugar Carolina
  • This tomato-based discovery features everything a sauce should have, a sweet-spicy balance with a tang. It comes out of the bottle nice and slowly. Dont let the acidic vinegar fumes fool you. This liquid gold is smooth and it rests gently on the tongue. The sucralose, a sugar substitute and molasses only add a trivial amount of sugar. I must say Im pleasantly surprised how much I like this one.

G Hughes Sugar Free Sweet Heat BBQ Sauce

This popular brand offers a wide variety of calorie-free salad dressings, dessert toppings, as well as BBQ sauces!

Why I like it: I tested the Walden Farms Original flavor BBQ sauce and it was actually pretty tasty! It has apple cider, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and cayenne pepper for a kick. This sauce has zero carbs per 2 tablespoon-sized serving.

Why I dont like it: The only downside was the thin texture. I personally prefer a thicker texture but would consider this as a decent option. I bought this bottle at Sprouts, but its available on as well.

How Do You Make Your Bbq Sauce Less Sweet

To cut back on the sweetness of your sauce, even if it is already a sugar-free or less sugar sauce, all you have to do is add some more vinegar.

If there is apple cider vinegar on the list, use some additional apple cider vinegar to reduce the sweetness.

If the label doesnt specify which vinegars were used, apple cider vinegar, rice vinegar, or white vinegar works best.

How To Make Your Own Low Carb Bbq Sauce

To make this recipe, which uses the shortcut of no sugar added ketchup, you only need these ingredients:

    • Low Sugar Ketchup I prefer Heinz No Sugar Added Ketchup, but if you have a preferred brand already feel free to give that a try.
    • Worcestershire Sauce This sauce does have fish in it. If you have a seafood allergy or are avoiding soy, I have heard of people having success substituting coconut aminos instead of Worcestershire sauce.
    • Liquid Smoke Liquid smoke is pretty essential to the classic bbq sauce flavor, and it should be pretty easy to find at your grocery store.
    • Apple Cider Vinegar
    • Cayenne Powder
