Make Amazing Italian Dishes With Barilla Italian Baking Sauce
Quite frequently, my father likes to bring over miscellaneous food items that he purchases for me while grocery shopping. Recently, my dad brought over a 24 ounce jar of Barilla Italian Baking Sauce. Although I had seen the product advertised in store circulars, I had never tried it. Previously, I had eaten several types of Barilla pasta, as well as their regular marinara sauce and was impressed with the taste and quality of all of the Barilla products that I tried. Being a big fan of all types of red pasta sauces, I couldnt wait to try cooking with and eating the Barilla Italian Baking Sauce.
The Official Pasta Sauce Power Rankings
- Copy Link URLCopied!
Lets get to it, shall we? I present the indisputable and 1,000% correct Pasta Sauce Power Rankings. The general rules are:
I got jarred sauce , bought standard marinara or the closest approximation I could find and tried to include no more than one jar per brand. There are a lot of sauces here and, just as when looking at a list of Chumbawamba members, it can become overwhelming and difficult to tell them apart. You wont really go wrong with, say, the top dozen or so sauces on this list.
I ranked these by taste and attractiveness of packaging lets face it, when youre looking for a new pasta sauce, its usually the simple/earnestly rustic label that gets your attention.
Cost is difficult to pin down and, given theres a wide variety of prices you might pay depending on the retailer, I didnt use it as a metric. That said, when something is a particularly good value, I note that in the ranking.
1. Raos Marinara
This is a little complicated, so bear with me. In December, I tweeted out a photo of Victoria marinara sauce and declared it the best on the market. That was incorrect, and we regret the error. However.
Victoria does make the best sauce, but its the premium White Linen brand, typically found at Costco, thats superior, not the standard marinara . So: Why not just put Victoria White Linen at the top of the ranking?
Packaging Attractiveness Rating: 12
2. Mezzetta Marinara
Packaging Attractiveness Rating: 25
The Meatball Shop Classic Tomato Sauce
Ingredients: Imported Italian Whole Peeled Tomatoes, Fresh Onions, Olive Oil, Salt, Fresh Garlic, Oregano, Chili Flakes, Bay Leaves
Appearance & Consistency: Though this sauce did have some oil separation, a quick stir lent it the velvetiness I’d hoped for. Given the fact that I spotted a few minced garlic cloves floating around, I expected this to taste a lot like the allium.
Taste: Imagine you had the time to simmer fresh tomatoes and smoky spices on the stovetop. What a fantastic visualization, right?! Well, The Meatball Shop Classic Tomato Sauce will bless your plate of penne with homemade results sans kitchen time.
Eat This, Not That! Verdict:
If you’re ever fortunate enough to walk into one of the swanky New York-based locations of The Meatball Shop, you’ll realize how this sauce smells just like it. The topper was tangy and umami-rich, but surprisingly not spicy at all despite its inclusion of chili flakes. This sauce wasn’t too robust or complex, rendering it perfect for meatballs or ragù.

Bertolli Organic Traditional Olive Oil Basil & Garlic
Pasta sauce is one of the top sources of cancer-fighting lycopene in the American diet thanks to the Italian gravy’s use of cooked tomatoes. Bertolli doubles down on the benefits by using organic tomatoes, a variety that research suggests may have higher levels of these disease-fighting polyphenols and vitamin C than conventionally-grown varieties. That’s why we’re even more disappointed Bertolli chose to bog down this sauce with sugareven if it is organic.
Muir Glen Organic Tomato Basil & Chunky Tomato And Herb
Chunky Tomato & Herb
For being so low-calorie, low in fat, and low in sodium, we were pretty disappointed to learn that Muir Glen adds sugar to their offering. Because it’s not too high, we ranked these spaghetti sauce brands favorably among the no-sugar-added crowd, especially since they’re all organic.

Newman’s Own Organic Marinara
For another healthy and organic sauce option, Newman’s Own Organic Marinara is a pretty good store-bought marinara sauce. The sauce is also made with all organic ingredients, with your marinara basics like tomatoes, onions, garlic, and spices, but has some other additions to differentiate it from other store-bought sauces. Newman’s Own Organic Marinara also has organic extra virgin olive oil and carrots added in, which help the flavor stand out.
This sauce is also cost-efficient, while a majority of the reviews are pretty positive. While one person did complain that it was “bland and boring,” most people loved the stuff. “Best marinara sauce. Everyone notices the difference in marinara if I have to get a different brand,” one noted. As if that wasn’t enough to love, the Newman’s Own brand also donates its profits to charity, so your purchase would be doing some good in the world beyond your kitchen, too. Really, this sauce isn’t anything too special as far as taste goes, but it’s pretty darn good.

How We Graded Them
Here are the four metrics we used to determine each sauce’s final grade:
We know that a dish of comforting pasta can be easily tarnished by a sauce that’s stuffed with extra calories, sodium, and sugar. But what about fat? Tomatoes are brimming with vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin that requires some healthy oil for your body to fully reap its benefits. To sift the good sauces from the bad, make sure your pick packs omega-3-rich olive oil rather than inflammatory soybean and canola oils.
The perfect pasta sauce requires a little more than just a fresh batch of tomatoes. We commend brands that blend aromatic spices and heart-healthy oils into their sauces but frown upon those that use inflammatory oils and unnecessary additives.
Appearance & Consistency
Pasta sauce should coat your noodles and effortlessly cling to your casserole’s crevices. A thin and runny one simply won’t do the trick and won’t hold any flavor.
Probably the utmost important factor, taste plays a significant role when it comes to which sauce we decide to slather on our spaghetti. A winning marinara should be bursting with fresh flavors, boast a delicate sweet to salty to tart balance, and complement rather than overpower your culinary creation.
Prego Lower Sodium Traditional
It might be good for your heart because it’s lower in sodiumcompared to the other Prego sauces, that is. But if you’re looking for low sodium, check out our best list of healthy spaghetti sauce brands below for an “Eat This”-approved recipe. Because between the excess amount of sugar and inflammatory omega-6s from the canola oil, this sauce really isn’t as heart-friendly as we’d like.

Aldi Specially Selected Premium Marinara
In terms of money-saving groceries, Aldi is a pretty great store to shop at. Nothing is too expensive, and there are a ton of options. The store brand of marinara sauce there, too, is pretty impressive. Aldi’s Specially Selected Premium Marinara isn’t the absolute best premade sauce on the market, to be fair, but it might just surprise you anyway.
According to one review of Aldi’s sauce, it’s decent overall, though “a little on the bland side.” But there’s also a bit of a culinary conspiracy theory that says the Aldi sauce is actually the same as Rao’s Marinara sauce, meaning you’d be getting an especially good deal on an amazing store-bought sauce if you buy the Aldi brand. Whether or not the two sauces are the same, it’s hard to deny that the Aldi’s sauce is a lot better than you might have thought.
The Silver Palate Low Sodium Marinara
Ingredients: Imported San Marzano Whole Peeled Tomatoes, California Whole Peeled and Crushed Tomatoes, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Fresh Onions, Fresh Carrots, Fresh Garlic, Pear Concentrate, Spices
Appearance & Consistency: Though the general consistency was light, albeit with sporadic tomato lumps, this sauce was jam-packed with spices by the looks of it. Not to mention, the fresh carrots added some crunchiness, which I can predict will work well in a slew of recipes.
Taste: Despite being the lowest in sodium of all our test panelists, The Silver Palate didn’t disappoint my taste buds. Sure, it wasn’t as umami-packed as some of the other picks, but it did boast unexpected fresh flavors and hearty spices.
Eat This, Not That! Verdict:
This pick is lacking sodium, but that doesn’t mean it’s not rife with flavor. Instead of relying on the heart-harming stuff, The Silver Palate’s marinara takes advantage of quality ingredients, such as imported San Marzano tomatoes and EVOO, to lend the sauce its complexity. This surprisingly delicious sauce proves that you can keep the salt off your fork without compromising flavor.

Does Marinara Sauce Have To Be Refrigerated
Once opened, tomato sauce is generally microbially stable due to its low pH, so unless stated on the pack, refrigeration is not required. However, refrigeration does no harm and will slow chemical and colour changes that over extended periods of time may alter the sauces sensory properties.Feb 12, 2017
Ragu Old World Style Organic Traditional
Like Bertolli, Ragu does right by using all organic products in their Traditional sauce. . Unfortunately, their attempt to do right is foiled by their offenses of adding inflammatory soybean oilwhich, we’re happy to say is at least organic, and thus pesticide- and carcinogen-freeand sugar to the sauce.

Trader Joe’s Tomato Basil Marinara Sauce
Believe it or not, but Trader Joe’s Trader Giotto’s Tomato Basil Marinara Sauce isn’t terrible. And like everything at Trader Joe’s, it’s priced competitively, so if you’re looking to save some money while still getting a decent marinara sauce, then this might just be what you want. While the sauce isn’t the healthiest, with added sugar and oil, it’s still not the worst sauce out there and has a relatively fresh taste to it.
But, the sauce isn’t perfect. One review called it “mediocre,” while others complained about the sugar content, to the point where one said it was really more of an “herb-infused ketchup than an actual sauce.” If you’ve never had the Trader Joe’s marinara, though, it might be worth it to try. It’s not too expensive so generally inoffensive that it will probably appeal to whoever you serve it to.

Organic Marinara Pasta Sauce
This is an extremely simple sauce, which is a great thing in Italian cooking if you want your fresh pasta to shine. While its teetering on Barilla levels of oregano, there is a bit more restraint by its more garlic-forward approach. My only complaint is that it has the consistency of salsa. I wish the ingredients were a bit more blended, including the herbs, which easily got stuck in my teeth as I was noshing. You can easily break up the tomatoes in a heated saucepan, but if Im looking for convenience, then I want 365 to have already done this work for me.
Rag Old World Style Traditional
Ingredients: Tomato Purée , Salt, Olive Oil, Sugar, Dehydrated Onions, Dehydrated Garlic, Spices, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder
Appearance & Consistency: Upon twisting open this jar of Ragú, I immediately noticed the chunks floating atop an otherwise runny orange-red sauce. One simple stir confirmed that this sauce isn’t very hearty.
Taste: Average mediocre nothing special. This sauce didn’t pack an extra umami punch, even though Ragú sprinkled romano cheese into the mix. In fact, it could’ve ranked a bit higher on this list if it slashed off a few grams of sugar.
Eat This, Not That! Verdict:
Though Ragú loudly spells out “Our Richest, Thickest Recipe” on its label, it definitely doesn’t deliver. The added Romano cheese didn’t lend any richness to this pasta topper, let alone thicken it up. Besides lacking in the taste and texture departments, Ragú didn’t impress us nutritionally either, given that the sodium and sugar contents per serving are sky-high.
