Is Big Mac Sauce Vegan
Sadly for most plant-based McDonald’s fans, OG Big Mac sauce is not vegan.
This has less to do with the fact that it’s usually served slathered on top of a beef patty, and more to do with the inclusion of egg yolks on the ingredients list.
However, just because traditional Big Mac sauce isn’t vegan friendly, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t veggie alternatives available.
For instance, for our hugely popular giant vegan Big Mac dish made for X-Factor star James Arthur we made a Big Mac sauce with the following ingredients:
- ½ cup vegan mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp finely chopped white onions
- 2 tsp white vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
If you don’t want to go plant-based, you can simply substitute in regular mayo. However, whatever your preference, this recipe is a surefire way to recreate the classic Big Mac flavour.

How To Make Mcdonalds Big Mac Recipe
Make the sauce a day ahead. Combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Cover and place in the refrigerator.
Divide your ground beef into 12 evenly sized balls and shape them into thin, large patties. Season them on both sides and place in a hot pan. Fry for about 3-5 minutes per side or until fully cooked. Before removing them from the heat, add a cheese slice and allow it to melt.
Butter your buns on the inside and toast them in a pan until they start becoming golden.
To assemble the Big Mac, place the sauce on the buttered sides of all the buns. On all the bottom halves, layer the onions, pickles, lettuce and lastly the patties. Place the two halves on top of each other and finish off by placing a lid on the stack.
Serve with hot French fries and enjoy!

The Story Of The Big Mac Special Sauce
When McDonalds franchise owner Jim Delligatti first came up with his double patty, triple bun creation in 1967, he needed the perfect sauce to top it off. By 1968, the Big Mac® was launched nationally, and featured this delicious, creamy signature Big Mac® Special Sauce.
Over the next few years, the Big Mac Sauce ingredients were fine-tuned, and there were two different versions of the McDonalds Special Sauce being used. To eliminate inconsistency, a single recipe was developed that satisfied customers who had a taste for either one. This became Big Mac® Sauce recipe 72.
In 1974, the name Special Sauce was used in the famous advertising campaign: “Two all-beef patties, Special Sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.
The recipe was again tweaked in 1991 and remained that way until 2004 when Fred Turner, who had worked alongside founder Ray Kroc, wanted it changed back.
After tracking down the original formula in the McDonalds archives, Turner contacted the supplier who had helped develop the McDonalds Special Sauce years ago, and the McDonalds Special Sauce recipe was returned.

Tips For Making And Storing Homemade Big Mac Sauce
- Try to make-ahead for the best taste. Like many sauces, it can take time for all the flavors in a homemade secret sauce to blend. Make the sauce at least a few hours before you plan to use it and keep it covered in the fridge.
- Dont use cold sauce. Remove a small portion of the sauce from the refrigerator and let it warm up while you cook. Just remember to throw away any remaining warm sauce to avoid getting sick.

Big Mac Sauce So Easy So Good
Copycat Big Mac Sauce is probably the main reason people buy the Bic Mac in the first place. Theres not really anything special about it. The meat is thin, the extra bun layer in the middle is just carbs. And, the lettuce is wilted by the time you eat it!
But, if you make Big Mac Sauce at home and prepare your own burger, you can make it even bigger and better. Most of the ingredients are probably already in your fridge or pantry! You dont need to chop anything or cook anything. Its a matter of whisking the ingredients together and thats it!
I highly recommend that you refrigerate the sauce for at least two hours or so before eating it. It just gives that ingredients time to marry together, which really just enhances the flavour. Its so good! I cant wait for you to try it!

What Is The Origin Of The Big Mac
The earliest advertisements didn’t refer to the sauce as we now know it, but rather, called it “secret sauce”. However, in 1974 a new advertising campaign came up with the famous jingle “Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.” It has been known as “special sauce” ever since!

What Is Big Mac Sauce
A common misconception is that the Big Mac special sauce is just Thousand Island dressing in disguise. It isnt. Although Thousand Island dressing is a significant component of the recipe, the Big Mac secret sauce is distinctively different enough to consider as a unique sauce.
The big secret to the special sauce is the addition of Indian relish. The recipe for Indian relish calls for red bell peppers and onions mixed with vinegar and red pepper flakes. This mixture gives the Big Mac sauce a bit of a kick and helps to thicken it up.
Indian relish is available in most larger supermarkets or online, but if you cant find it ready-made, you can always use sweet pickle relish. If you are feeling adventurous you may want to try making a highly rated version of Indian relish from All Recipes.
How Do You Make Big Mac Sauce From Scratch
Obviously, most of us don’t have many spare packets of xanthan gum lying around the kitchen. Nevertheless, it is possible to make a delicious Big Mac sauce from scratch with everyday ingredients.
At Twisted, we have plenty of experience creating different spins on the classic Big Mac burger. As a result, we have a pretty good understanding of what it takes to make your own sauce.

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you don’t have a pantry full of preservatives and chemical binders, so let me break this down into simple ingredients you’ll understand. Based on the above ingredient list, you will need sweet pickle relish , mayo, vinegar, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika. That sounds a lot more reasonable, doesn’t it?
Make the sauce simply by mixing the ingredients together, then store it in the refrigerator overnight to allow the flavors to meld. You can enjoy it immediately if you are impatient, but letting it meld makes a big difference.
The Ingredients In The Secret Big Mac Sauce Aren’t That Secret Anymore
For years, McDonald’s protected the ingredients list of the Big Mac Special Sauce like a closely-guarded government secret. Although there is no shortage of copycat recipes available online, McDonald’s Executive Chef Dan Coudreaut demystified the process when he answered a customer-submitted question and made the sauce on YouTube in 2012. “Quite honestly,” he explains, “the ingredients have been available in the restaurant or… on the internet for many years, so it’s not really a secret.”
Coudreaut walks us through a version of the Big Mac sauce made with store-bought mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish, classic yellow mustard, white wine vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika for both color and flavor. Whisk it all together in a bowl and voila: homemade Special Sauce made with ingredients you can find at your grocery store. Unfortunately, Coudreaut didn’t provide measurements, and we’re not even sure how authentic this sauce really is. While a lot of the ingredients are similar to the ones listed on McDonald’s website, we’re missing quite a few things, like soybean oil, salt, sugar, turmeric, and unidentified “spices,” which surely contribute to that one-of-a-kind flavor.

Mcdonald’s Has Changed The Big Mac Sauce Recipe A Few Times Over The Years
The original Big Mac sauce reportedly took two years to develop, and it remained unchanged for over 20 years, when, according to McDonald’s, the recipe was “tweaked in 1991 and remained that way until 2004.” Around that time, the company’s profits were falling, so McDonald’s new CEO called Fred Turner, the company’s original operations officer and former CEO, out of retirement. According to the Chicago Tribune, Turner could “taste” the reason that McDonald’s was in trouble: Over the years, they had changed the Big Mac Special Sauce to cut costs. Unfortunately, the original recipe had been lost, but Turner remembered the original California supplier. They worked together to recover the recipe and returned to making “a hamburger the way used to make a hamburger.”
That’s not the only change they’ve made to the Special Sauce over the years. In 2018, McDonald’s made some big ingredient changes. They removed artificial preservatives, artificial flavors, and added colors from artificial sources from their classic burgers, and that meant removing artificial preservatives from the Big Mac Special Sauce. We can’t imagine Jim Delligatti using artificial ingredients back in the ’60s, so these changes might have brought the recipe even closer to its original iteration.
How To Use Big Mac Sauce:
Beyond its classic application you can use this versatile sauce in many other ways. Here are just a few ideas:
- Slathered hamburgers and hot dogs

- Serve it as a dipping sauce for your French fries, potato wedges, onions rings and veggies

The Birth Of The Big Mac
The Big Mac was first cooked back in 1967 by a franchisee in Pittsburgh named Jim Delligatti. At first, he only served the creation at his restaurants, but the burgers popularity quickly grew.
Within a year, the Big Mac began popping up on McDonalds menu boards across the region and then the country.
In the early days, the Big Mac sauce recipe varied amongst different parts of the US, and it wasnt until 1972 that McDonalds standardized the recipe.
Two years later, the famous jingle was first released, and the rest is the stuff of fast-food legend.
