Melinda’s Habanero Wing Sauce | Spicy Food Review

Melindas has many purchasing options. If you want, you can buy a single 12oz sauce bottle for about $7-8, but I wouldnt recommend it. That price range isnt ideal.

These sauces dont require any refrigeration unless explicitly stated on the bottle . You can keep them opened in a cabinet for months and unopened you can pretty much keep it on a shelf as long as you wish. It makes sense to buy a few at a time to save money.

To me, even more important than saving money is having a variety of flavors on hand so Im prepared for any type of meal. By getting a variety pack with six flavors, I can save around $8 and be ready for every type of meal.

Melindas Hot Sauce Heat Levels

The Original Habanero Pepper Hot Sauce is said to have medium heat levels, making it an all-rounder for those with different spice tolerances.

Just to give you an idea of what medium feels like – the habanero pepper is one of the worlds hottest chili peppers. Compared to jalapeños, which have a Scoville Units rating of 5,000, habanero peppers usually measure around 200,000 to 300,000 S.U.

However, the blend of vegetables and citrus flavors work to balance out the heat, so you have room to enjoy the flavors and the heat.

Other flavors will have different heat levels. The Naga Jolokia and the Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce are two of the spiciest flavors that Melindas has to offer.

Nandos Peri Peri Hot Sauce

This blend of four chiles, including cayenne and African birds eye, plus lemon and garlic, started out at a Portuguese restaurant in Johannesburg, South Africa. Its now the signature sauce of a chain of fast-casual restaurants. As you can tell from the logo, and the restaurants, it goes well with chicken, but I think youll find plenty of other things to put it on, too.

Introducing: Melindas Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Pepper Sauce

I want to start this off by saying, I love this hot sauce!

Its tangy, and a little sweet, and the scorpion peppers have such a unique flavour.

Melindas Scorpion Pepper Sauce is made in the USA and is quite hard to find in Canada. At least in the small town I live in.

I was lucky enough to find a few bottles at my local Winners store. They had about 5 bottles on the shelf and I picked one up to try the Scorpion Pepper version of one of my favourite hot sauces.

After trying this hot sauce I drove back to the store to pick up the remaining bottles but there was only one left!

Anyway, enough about me. Melindas Scorpion Pepper sauce is a tangy, and flavourful hot sauce. The taste of the scorpion peppers is front and center and mixes well with the floral habanero peppers.

You can usually find this hot sauce on Amazon or any of the Canadian hot sauce retailers. At the time of posting they are all currently sold out. Which really says something about this hot sauce.

Ingredients: Scorpion Peppers and water, Vinegar, Habanero Peppers, Carrots, Onions, Lime Juice, Salt, Garlic, Citric Acid, Xantham Gum

Melindas Hot Sauce History

Melinda

Melindas Hot Sauce was owned and created by Marie Sharp since 1981 in Belize. Maries habanero pepper sauce recipe quite literally blew the nation away under the name of Melindas Hot Sauce in 1989.

During this time, Melindas Hot Sauce was then trademarked by its importer, Figueroa International Inc., which then forced Marie Sharp to make her own brand of hot sauce under her name.

To this day, Melindas Hot Sauce is known for its fine agricultural ingredients, experimental fruity flavors, no added preservatives, and of course, its fiery flavor.

The Downsides Of Melinda’s Hot Sauce

Many of Melindas sauces come in plastic, squeezable bottles. From a usability standpoint, it works well for squeezing out however much sauce you want. From an environmental standpoint, plastic isnt ideal.

However, if you rinse them out, you could definitely reuse these bottles for something like homemade salad dressing or even for beauty products, like shampoo. Youre also unlikely to love every single flavor Melindas carries. But with as large of a flavor variety as they carry , youre likely to find something you enjoy.

Secret Aardvark Habanero Hot Sauce

Billed as a Tex-Mex and Caribbean hybrid, this sauce has a base of habaneros and roasted tomatoes, but the flavor is rounded out with mustard, turmeric, spices, andI dont knowmagic? Advocates of the Aardvark say it goes well with anything: burgers, eggs, pizza, etc. Suzanne on Amazon called it Incredible! Really yummy, smokey, with a hint of citrus flavor. Made in Portland, Oregon, its become nearly as ubiquitous on restaurant tables there as ketchup.

If You Need Hot Sauce In Your Bag: Tabasco

Tabasco is not one of my go-tos. Its a classic, but from my point of view, the texture is too watery and the taste is too barbedthe spice is zingy instead of smoldering. But there is a place for it: Take advantage of the bottles diminutive size and slip it in your bag or your pocket for on-the-go needs. Its certainly way better than nothing when it comes to zhuzhing up your lunch.

Hot Sauce Review : Melinda’s Extra Hot

Heat level: Very hot

Flavor: I love this stuff intensely. The main flavor is that of fruity habanero chilies that have been charred to give them a distinct smokiness. Multiple times a month, I bring it to the table and start adding it willy-nilly to my food, before realizing that, once again, I was so looking forward to its flavor that I completely forgot about its not-insignificant heat. My wife, Adri, finds this amusing. I don’t know why I keep doing it over and over, but I don’t carethat flavor is worth it.

Melindas Xxxtra Hot Hot Sauce Review

May 19, 2019

This is a fairly easy sauce to obtain and is one in a series of four sauces. Theres apparently a 4x hot hot sauce from Melindas but here we are reviewing the 3x.

We liked the appearance of this one, its a solid color and there are a few seeds floating around, so its not overly processed.

When you take a whiff you catch a nice blend of the habaneros and vinegar, plus some hints of the fruitier ingredients.

The texture of this sauce is similar to a sweet and sour sauce and with the flecks that are in there we originally had Melindas XXXtra Hot pointed one higher. Once we got that texture in our mouths though, we dialed it down by a pointed because its too chunky and was fairly grainy as well.

Not much going for it flavor-wise as it was a bit bland and feels vinegar-heavy. Potentially something you could use when mixing it in, but when its a feature its probably not the best choice.

For the price and the availability, Melindas could be a good option for folks looking to up their heat game, but for us its a bit below average, especially in the flavor and heat department for what it is supposed to be.

Heat level: Moderate to hot

Flavor: Tasting this ketchup-thick hot sauce for the first time, you’d swear that there was tropical fruit in it. But nope, that’s just the fruity pickled Scotch bonnet peppers you’re tasting. There’s garlic, mustard, and celery seed in the bottle, too, but there must be some kind of magic going on to make the flavors of mangoes and pineapples appear where they aren’t. In any case, it’s darned delicious on eggs and sandwiches.

Melindas Red Savina Taste Test

Ok, here we go. Lemme give it a try

I tried a good dousing of each of the two Melindas that I have on hand. I put each sample portion on a tortilla chip, to get a good and equal comparison.

As you can see I used my good china to display this taste testaka a paper towel.

The Red Savina is definitely hotter than the Original habanero. It has been a couple minutes now, and I can still feel a gentle tingle on my tongue. It is a nice heat though, not like the kind that overwhelms you and has you reaching for anything you can find to soothe the burn. Although I seem to do that to myself fairly often, I prefer this kind of burnobvious, but not mind altering.

The Red Savina also has a little stronger flavor than the original. Although all their ingredients on their labels are the same besides the type of pepper, the Red Savina lists the chili pepper as the first ingredient. So, as I have always understood, that is the most prominent item in the recipe.

In the Original the first listed item is carrots, then habanero peppers. The Red Savina actually seemed a slightly more tangy to me. Maybe having more carrots proportionality in the original mellowed out the tang a bit. Overall, they are pretty similar in flavor, but the Red Savina definitely makes more of an impression.

How Hot Is Melinda’s Hot Sauce

Each bottle of Melindas has between one and five fire symbols filled in to show the spiciness level. Ive found these to be pretty accurate. To me, level one, and even level two, I wouldnt describe as spicy at all . Once you get to level four, I recommend only using small amounts so you can taste the flavor and not be distracted by the heat. At level five, proceed with caution and have some milk or other drink nearby.

Flavor: This is the classic, original Buffalo sauce, and there’s no substitute when it comes to saucing Buffalo wings. What Is A Red Savina Pepper

Episode 14 – Melinda’s Ghost Pepper Sauce

I thought it appropriate to first give a little information on the star of this hot sauce, the Red Savina. This pepper is actually a habanero that has been specially bred to supposedly be hotter and bigger than a regular habanero. It is also red in color, instead of the typical orange habanero we usually see.

For a while it was even recognized as the hottest pepper in the world. According to wikipedia, In February 2007, the Red Savina chili was displaced in Guinness World Records as the hottest chili in the world by the Naga Jolokia pepper. The Red Savina held the record from 1994 until 2006.
