Can Hot Sauce Kill You

Trying the WORLD’S SPICIEST HOT SAUCE – Mad Dog 357 No.9 Plutonium taste test!

It is possible to overdose on capsaicin, the chemical that makes chili peppers hot. However, the only way you can die from eating hot sauce is if the sauce if sufficiently hot and you eat it in sufficient quantity.

A study performed in 1980 calculated that it would take consuming 3 pounds of superhot pepper powder to kill a person weighing 150 pounds. It is highly unlikely anyone could consume that amount, as their body would react before reaching such a limit.

There have been reports of people ending up in the hospital in extreme situations after eating superhot chili peppers, particularly those with previous medical conditions.

There is also the story of a man who burned a hole in his esophagus from eating super hot peppers, but that was from vomiting, not from the peppers themselves.

While it is true that eating extremely hot peppers and hot sauces can cause vomiting, nausea and stomach pain, the reality is that they cannot tear or burn through any of your body parts.

Steel Pot Required To Withstand The Heat

Sichuan spicy pots are traditional dishes in China, but people all over the world concoct their own variations. And in some places, these pots become even more blazing thanks to recipe tweaks like adding more chilis. Thankfully, these pots also incorporate all types of toppings and sides, so if you find yourself enjoying a meal of one, there will at least be a bit of veggies and meat to take the edge off. Still, there are no guarantees youll walk away without your eyes watering and nose running, if you can finish your bowl in the first place.

The Most Popular Hot Sauces In The World

Even though the worlds hottest chili changes constantly, you just have to give great respect to the ones mentioned here because they have the power to blind your taste buds and give you thunderclap headaches in worst cases.

From the least, we have the Red Savina Habanero with 500,000 SHU. This pepper used to be really hot way back until the 7 pot red giant with approximately 1,000,000 SHU was discovered. The search didnt end there because the 7 pot Barrackpore with approximately 1,000,000 SHU from Trinidad and Tobago was hotter.

With a whopping 1,041,427 SHU comes the Ghost pepper that visibly enthrones others but its kingship in the pepper world was short-lived when the Naga Viper came along with 1,349,000 SHU.

The Trinidad Scorpion came and enthroned others with its 1,463,700 SHU and it became a Guinness World record breaker in 2011. But a greater pepper called the 7-Pot-Primo took fourth place with 1,489,000 SHU. In third place, we have the 7 Pot Douglah that isnt just hot with 1,853,936 SHU but has a nice flavor.

In the second place, we have the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion with 2,009,231 SHU that stings your taste bud and the king of them all, for now, we have the Carolina Reaper that beat itself and held on to the title. Flavor: I love this stuff intensely. The main flavor is that of fruity habanero chilies that have been charred to give them a distinct smokiness. Multiple times a month, I bring it to the table and start adding it willy-nilly to my food, before realizing that, once again, I was so looking forward to its flavor that I completely forgot about its not-insignificant heat. My wife, Adri, finds this amusing. I dont know why I keep doing it over and over, but I dont carethat flavor is worth it.

My Process To Make Hot Sauce Is Simple

First, you add a bunch of hot peppers, garlic, , salt and water to a food processor and chop it coarsely to make a thick and pulpy salsa.

Transfer the mixture to a clean glass jar, cover it with cheese cloth, and place a rubberband around the lip to hold it in place.

Set aside for 24 hours to kick start the fermentation, then stir in the vinegar and let it ferment for a weekstill covered with cheese cloth.

At that point, transfer the mixture to a blender and blend until fairly smooth.

If you want a thinner hot sauce or your blender cant make the sauce smooth enough, you can strain the sauce through a fine-mesh strainer. For a thin and smooth hot sauce you can run it through a cheesecloth lined strainer to remove all pulp. Make sure to squeeze out all the liquid from the pulp if you use cheesecloth!

If you want to keep the pulp, just add more water to thin it out the desired consistency while youre blending.

Sriracha Became Popular With Asian Foods

My experience with Sriracha was everything I anticipated it would be because it is truly a great hot sauce. It uses a few simple and common hot sauce ingredients, has a great bright red hot sauce color and comes in a unique bottle shape, and was marketed toward consumers who already love hot sauce.

Although David Tran started producing Sriracha in 1980 it did not gain mainstream popularity until 2008. Sriracha became popular because Asian restaurant workers brought the sauce in the establishments for their personal use, patrons discovered it and began requesting it. It was marketed to patrons by accident but would not have gained popularity if consumers were not demanding it.

Are You Brave Enough To Try The Hottest Hot Sauce In The World

Theres a certain breed of person out there who loves hot sauce. Like, loves hot sauce so much they would marry a bottle of it if that were a legal, possible thing. As with all things, though, some people take it a little too far, and in this case taking it too far means making a sauce that is almost two times hotter than freaking pepper spray and selling it to people so that they can ingest it.

The worlds hottest sauce is called Mad Dog 357 Plutonium No. 9 and comes in at 9 million Scoville Hotness Units .

To put that in perspective, a bell pepper is 0 SHUs, because it contains no capsaicin, the ingredient responsible for the heat, pain, terror, euphoria, and everything else involved in eating spicy foods. A jalapeño? A paltry 5,000 SHUs. A Carolina Reaper, one of the hottest peppers on the planet, clocks in at 1.5 million SHUs and pepper spray the stuff used to stop criminals is around 5.3 million SHUs.

Thats not the only thing special about this sauce. Mad Dog 357 Plutonium No. 9 is 60% pure capsicum, and comes in a solid form. In order to useit, you have to heat the damn stuff to 140 degrees Fahrenheit just to get it out of the bottle.

Imagine that for a second. Not only is it hotter than hell on your tongue, but it is also needs to be physically scalding in order to be used at all.

Theres also a disclaimer for the sauce, which in part reads:

I agree, as indicated by my opening this bottle, as follows in connection with my purchase of this product:

Blair’s Mega Death Sauce With Liquid Fury

The 9 Best Hot Sauces in the World

Blair’s Mega Death Hot sauce with Liquid Fury is supposed to be used very sparingly, probably because it is 550,000 on the Scoville scale.

Finding out what exactly “liquid fury” means is nearly impossible, but this product does contain molasses which is said to mask the liquid fury that comes after. Whatever liquid fury is, it doesn’t sound good, and this hot sauce, apparently, packs a ton of it. Blair’s Mega Death Hot sauce with Liquid Fury is said to be 650 times hotter than a jalapeño. On a review for this sauce, Mark Belanger writes “Great sauce. Feels like getting shot in the tongue. Not that I ever got shot in the tongue but I imagine that’s how it would feel.” You can even buy special edition bottles that arrive in a little coffin box with a skull keychain. Adorable.

Yellowbird Habanero Hot Sauce

World’s HOTTEST Hot Sauce – Challenge (Severity: Plutonium 9000)

Spice rating: Reeeeal hot

Hailing from Austin Texas, Yellowbird Foods boasts a whole line of hot sauces made from farm-fresh fruits and vegetables. A true Austinite institution, the company goes organic whenever possible and has zero tolerance for chemicals, additives, and filler ingredients. Yellowbird is so-named because birds, insensitive to chili pepper burning capsaicin, are true champions when it comes to spicy eating.

The current Yellowbird hot sauce lineup includes a habanero, serrano, jalapeño, blue agave sriracha, and ghost pepper sauce. The original habanero wins points for being the spiciest of the sauces, but also one of the most creative combination of flavors. Crafted from habanero peppers, carrots, onions, organic cane sugar, and tangerine and lime concentrates, the bright orange sauce is at once spicy, sweet, and citrusy.

As a newer, gourmet-ish brand, Yellowbird hot sauces may not be as easy to come by as other brands of hot sauces on this list. Trying hunting for the Yellowbird label at natural food retailers, or ordering bottles online.
