Ragu Old World Style Marinara
Here’s where it starts to get diceyand we’re not just referring to the diced tomatoes. Ragu adds something called “Calcium Chloride” to their crushed tomatoes as a “firming acid.” The additive is Generally Recognized As Safe by the FDA, but we’re assuming Ragu uses it to thicken up their otherwise watery sauces instead of adding more tomato meat. They also use more soybean oil than extra virgin and, like in many Ragu sauces, natural flavor. There are better spaghetti sauce brands to drown your penne in.
Silver Palate Low Sodium Marinara
Its not the cheapest option, nor is it salt-free. However, it is one of the tastiest spaghetti toppers.
With only 115 mg of sodium per ½ cup, it contains about 65-80% less sodium than most major brands.
Whats so special about The Silver Palate pasta sauce is that it uses imported San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes. The volcanic ash in that region of Italy creates a rich tasting fruit unlike those grown anywhere else.
They use extra virgin olive oil, onions, carrots, garlic, and other spices.
Theres no added sugar but the caveat is that it does contain pear concentrate, which is a form of added sweetness. Still, its nothing too naughty.

- The best options contain five grams or less of sugar, and roughly the same amount of carbs. Ideally, you would hit less than 400 milligrams of sodium, too, but it’s pretty hard to find sauces that are low in sugar and sodium unless you’re able to shell out big bucks for organic jars.
- Look for minimal ingredients. Shapiro says this means only three or four whole foods plus herbs and spices. If sugar is added, it should be far down on the list, not near the top.
- Organic and local options are good ways to ensure you’re getting a cleaner, less processed sauce, but it’s not a necessity. In fact, Shapiro’s favorite brand isn’t organic, but she says it’s still “simple and downright delicious.”

Walmart has an impressive selection of macro-friendly foods in the carbs category. I love their lower carb tortillas, wraps and pitas as well as their chickpea and lentil pastas.
These carb balance tortillas are only 4g net carbs and taste the best out of all other brands Ive tried. Use these for wraps, tacos, tortilla pizzas, quesadillas and more.
Flat Out brand flatbreads are the best to use for macro-friendly pizza. I throw this in the oven topped with pizza sauce, cheese and toppings and bake for about 10 minutes.
Josephs mini pitas and pita bread are amazing because theyre low calorie and pretty high in protein. These are perfect dipped in hummus or peanut butter.
The Josephs pita bread are great for gyros, wraps, air fryer pizzas and more.
Barilla red lentil and chickpea pasta are higher protein alternatives to regular pasta and theyre made with only one ingredient!
Banza is another pasta alternative thats higher in protein than other pasta. In my opinion, this one tastes better than Barilla but has a few additional ingredients other than just chickpeas.

Siete foods tortillas are one of my favorites because theyre made with almond flour instead of wheat flour or corn.
Cappellos is another almond flour pasta alternative found in the freezer section. Its a bit more expensive because of super high quality ingredients, but was super excited to find it at Walmart!

Prego Light Smart Traditional Italian Sauce
We’re pleased by the low-calorie option out of Prego, but they still add sugar as a stand-in for fatan unfortunate substitution as the vitamin A found in tomatoes is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means your body won’t be able to reap its free-radical-fighting benefits without a little drizzle of EVOO. That’s why it’s one of our foods you’re eating wrong.
Barilla Fire Roasted Marinara Sauce

They do make a canned tomato sauce with no salt added. It does use one of the better BPA-free liners on the market.
The ingredients are tomatoes, onion powder, and garlic powder. Its a sugar free spaghetti sauce. Or at least, theres none except for that which is naturally in the tomatoes.
While not the most exciting or tasty on its own, you can easily boost the flavor by adding your own herbs and spices. We like it with oregano and chili pepper flakes.
