How Long To Simmer Your Sauce

How to Make Super Easy Sloppy Joes | Sloppy Joe Recipe | Allrecipes.com

This Sloppy Joe recipe is flexible and turns out tasty whether you need to make it in a flash or you have extra time to allow it to simmer.

At a minimum, you should let the mixture simmer long enough to heat through once you’ve stirred the sauce into the meat. I’d recommend 10 minutes of simmering, if possible.

However, if you have the time, the flavors will really meld and develop if you allow your mixture to simmer for 30 to 45 minutes . Just keep the heat low and stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning. And if the sauce starts to get too thick, stir in a little bit of water to buy you more simmering time.

One trick I sometimes use is to make this recipe on the stove and then transfer it to a slow cooker just before I go pick up my kids from school. When it’s time to eat that evening, dinner is already ready and the flavor is extra yummy…double win!

All The Savory And Tangy Flavors Of A Classic Mississippi Roast In A Quick

Last week I shared the absolute BEST homemade sloppy joes and you guys are already going crazy for it! Im SO happy, because its one of my favorites! The idea for this twist on traditional sloppy joes literally came to me as I was driving down the road , and I immediately pulled into a parking lot so I could write the idea down.

I LOVE the flavors in the famous Mississippi pot roast, and Ive been working on perfecting a recipe to make it from scratch for you all. Traditionally its made with a packet of au jus mix and a packet of ranch dressing, which I always found made it too salty for my tastes. That from scratch recipe is in the works, but I wanted to bring some of those flavor elements into a quick-cooking weeknight dinner recipe.

My friend Sabrina is the QUEEN of unique sloppy joe recipes , and Im totally not trying to take over her place so this rounds out my sloppy joe recipes but I hope you enjoy it every bit as much as I did!

How To Serve Sloppy Joes Homemade Meat Sauce

Most folks want to eat sloppy joes meat sauce on a bun. Water rolls or crusty type rolls work best for sloppy joes that will be assembled ahead of time. Softer buns might get soggy if assembled too far in advance. If guests are making their own sloppy joes, hamburger buns and slider buns are what most folks prefer.

  • Brookdale Sloppy Joe Sauce

Manwich canned sloppy joe sauce commercials were catchy and sort of cheesy back in the day.

Most notably, I recall the jingle, I want a Manwich, please. Going back farther, commercials talked about how you could just brown some ground beef and have a Manwich night. And remember, a sandwich is a sandwich, but a Manwich is a meal.

Aldi sells its own version of Manwich sauce: Brookdale Sloppy Joe Sauce.

While Aldi is known for eschewing a lot of name brands and primarily selling its own house brands, some house brands are less common and familiar than others at the discount grocer.

Brookdale is a small private label at Aldi that doesnt seem to encompass much besides canned beef stew , canned chili, canned corned beef, canned corned beef and hash, canned Vienna sausage, and canned sloppy joe sauce.

In other words, Brookdale products are great for stocking your emergency shelf.

Brookdale Sloppy Joe Sauce cost $0.79 for a 15-oz. can at the time of publication. This is a Regular Buy, which means its at Aldi year round.

Manwich costs about $1 for a can thats around 15-16 ounces from retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Dollar General, making the Aldi version a better deal.

Ingredients for the Aldi sauce are fairly straightforward, with mostly recognizable and whole foods other than high fructose corn syrup and xanthan gum. Ingredients are similar to Manwich sauce.

How to make Sloppy Joes Easy Recipe

The sloppy joe sandwiches I ate growing up used just 3 ingredients for sloppy joe sauce brown sugar, ketchup, and mustard. That is how I continued to make them after moving out and getting married. They lacked in flavor so we rarely craved them for dinner. But, ever since I created THIS sloppy joe recipe, we want them all the time! Gather these ingredients:

    Grocery List for Sloppy Joes

    • Ground beef
    • Tomato paste
    • Dijon mustard

This isnt super spicy, but it can be a little spicy for kids. I wait to add the chili powder until after serving theirs.

If you cannot find Mexican stewed tomatoes then you can substitute with a can of fire roasted diced tomatoes instead. Make sure you drain it first. I can easily find the Mexican stewed tomatoes at one grocery store, but for some reason never at another.

Turn Up The Heat To Evaporate The Liquid

This method is probably the best way to solve the wet sloppy joes issue. In a way, it is also the quickest way to thicken the sauce without worrying about losing flavor or adding more ingredients. Bringing the sauce to a high boil and continuously stirring the sloppy joes will cause the liquid to evaporate, thus thickening the sauce.

It is also advised to stay on top of the stirring because the sauce will burn quickly. As you stir the pot, the sauce will thicken, and you must lower the heat back to the desired simmer once the desired consistency is reached. The sauce should be almost like a pasta sauce that will hold the sloppy joes together for each serving, still with a bit of liquid for juiciness.

What To Serve With Sloppy Joes

If serving these sliders at a casual small group function, I typically put them alongside this crunchy slaw, an assortment of chips, and hot sauce or BBQ sauce for those who want to add more flavor. Since sloppy joes are a fun and casual meal, I typically serve them with some of our favorite casual sweet treats like this Zoes chocolate sheet cake or these fudgy brownies with toffee and nuts.

    How To Make This Recipe

    The BEST Homemade Sloppy Joes
  • Start by heating a little oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it up. Let it cook for a few minutes without stirring to let the meat sear and develop a slight crust on the bottom.
  • Continue to cook the ground beef by breaking it up and stirring until mostly browned.
  • Add chopped peppers, onion, and garlic to the ground beef and continue to cook until the vegetables have softened and the meat is cooked through.
  • Add brown sugar, mustard, tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, and spices. Stir well to combine, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10-15 minutes to thicken slightly and let the flavors mix together. The longer it simmers, the better the flavors meld together. If it simmers too long, you can always add a little more water to loosen it up a bit.
  • Once thickened to your liking, butter and toast your favorite hamburger buns on a hot griddle. This helps the sloppy joe meat and sauce not soak into the bread as quickly. Or you could use smaller rolls for sloppy joe sliders. Assemble your sloppy joes and serve immediately with your favorite sides.

    Other Ingredients Youll Need

    • Onion I use a small white or yellow onion, chopped.
    • Green pepper Any color really, finely chopped.
    • Ketchup Helps give the sauce flavor and body.
    • Tomato paste This thickened, reduced form of tomato is very useful for deepening the flavor of your sauce. It also helps thicken it a bit.
    • Apple cider vinegar Vinegar helps balance flavors and brighten this recipe up. You could substitute red wine or white wine vinegar or non-seasoned rice vinegar.
    • Seasonings Garlic salt, celery salt, salt, and pepper.
    • Cheddar cheese or another good melting cheese. Optional
    • Hamburger buns

Pro Tips For Making Homemade Sloppy Joes:

    • Before you get started, toast your buns. Toasting the bun makes ALL the difference, and only takes a few minutes. Crank up the heat under the skillet to high, and add a drizzle of vegetable oil. When the oil is hot, add the buns, then place the buns cut side up on a cooling rack after theyre toasted.
    • Watch the sauce so that it doesnt reduce too much. When too much of the sauce reduces, it gives you a dry sloppy joe mixture. Everyone likes theirs a little differently, but for me, I cook it down so that I can see the bits of meat, and when I drag my spoon through the sauce, it leaves a trail where the sauce is parted. If the sauce immediately flows back into that trail, its too liquid-y. I want a few seconds before the sauce covers the trail, which gives me a saucy consistency thats not too liquid.
    • Choose your favorite type of bun. I usually go for either a pretzel bun , or a brioche bun.
