You’ll sometimes see michelada’s made with tomato juice and/or clamato, but since I have a pretty bad shellfish allergy, I’m sticking to this quick and easy hot sauce version. All you need for this michelada is:

  • Mexican beer – such as Modelo
  • Mexican Hot Sauce – such as Valentina
  • Worchestershire
  • 1Mexican beer such as Modelo

Alcohol has been listed in the food-you-should-limit section of any diet ever since its creation. Many people still chug down a bottle or two or more every Friday night though, so well say this cocktail is a healthier option.

So what makes our recipe sort of healthier? Its simple not using a lot of beer.

The USDA does not encourage drinking, but they do recommend not exceeding certain amounts if you do drink. We went through the guidelines for you and recreated this kind-of-healthy beer and tomato juice recipe.

Where Did The Michelada Beer Cocktail Come From

Well, honestly… no one knows. Like with many cocktails, there are multiple origin stories explaining how and when the Michelada was created, but theres no definitive answer as to which one is true. It all depends on who you ask!

One popular story centers around a man named Michel Ésper. He frequently ordered drinks at a sporting club in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and had the habit of ordering his beer on ice, with lime and salt added. Eventually, other patrons began to order the same, and referred to the drink as a Michelada, combining the name Michel and the word Limonada .

Another explanation for the name is that Michelada sounds like Mi chela helada, meaning My ice cold chela. Chela is a colloquial term for beer in Mexico, so Mi chela helada would mean My ice cold beer”.

Some people think that the the Michelada was created from the love that Mexicans have of adding lime to foods and drinks, and to coating the rim of their glasses with lime and salt when making cocktails.

This seems to be a likely theory since its definitely true that Mexicans add lime to EVERYTHING… so why not beer too?!

The difference between a michelada and a chelada is that the former has hot sauce and lime, while in the latter, lime is the only ingredient. But, there isn’t only one correct name here. Most of Mexico considers a michelada a beer and tomato juice drink, but in certain regions, it’s is called a ‘chelada.’ However, on an international level, when people hear ‘michelada,’ they’re probably thinking of beer with hot sauce and lime.

And finally, the answer to your question: what is the best beer to make a michelada with? Really, there isn’t a perfect beer that you have to make this drink with. You can make both micheladas and cheladas with any kind of beer, whether it’s a blonde, dark, craft, domestic or imported beer.

But, for many beer lovers, micheladas are almost an abomination . Even so, many people that live in Mexico and all over the world still love this drink.

Here is some information for people interested in finding out the best Mexican beer on the market: according to Forbes Mexico and the Cerveceros de México, ‘Ángel Caído’ from Concordia Hidalgo Brewery is the best Mexican beer brand in 2018. This is a Braggot style craft beer with honey that contains 9% alcohol. As far as commercial brands go, Bohemian beer is recognized as the third best Mexican beer, beating out Negra Modelo, which comes in 7th place.

Youll never forget the first time you have a can of cheap beer with hot sauce. I know this because I’ll never forget the first time I had a can of cheap beer with hot sauce. It looked ridiculous sliding across the bar, at Lorraine Bar in Philadelphia, the top brimming with Crystal hot sauce, some of it drooling over the lip of the can, some seeping into its mouth gagged with a lime wedge. I felt as silly ordering the drink as I did watching the bartender make itand as I did drinking it . But none of this is why Ill never forget my first time, and none of it is why youll never forget yours, either.

No, your first can of cheap beer literally doused in hot sauce will be memorialized in your brain forever, because its an absurd move to drink something that looks like a mistake. You have to trust that its, one, somehow not a mistake, and two, a tasty not-mistake.

At home, you build the drink to your personal taste, with your favorite hot sauce and your favorite canned beer PBR, Bud Light, Miller Lite, High Life if you want to get fancy. You can rim the can with salt, the same way you would a Michelada, but even that might be too much zhuzh for a can of cheap beer with hot sauce all over it.

Here’s how to make it: Squirt hot sauce ALL OVER the top of a can of beer, until it reaches the lip. Squeeze lime to taste.

  • Lime wedges, one or two to moisten the rim, and one to decorate the glass.
  • Tajin Powder (or finely crushed Piquin Pepper
  • Ice cubes, about 4 or 5 ice cubes per glass
  • Lime juice, about 2 tablespoons. If you don’t find limes you can substitute them with lemons.
  • Tabasco Sauce, you can also use Cholula o Tapatio Sauce.
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Maggi Sauce Seasoning
  • Cold Mexican Lager Beers, make sure they are very cold.

You will need to tall beer glasses previously chill or frost in your freezer for at least 60 minutes.

There’s nothing more fun than having a Michelada bar at brunch! Let your guests make their own Micheladas! There are so many different ways to make one! Offer an array of tomato juices: plain, spicy, low-sodium, V8, Zing Zang Bloody Mary Mix a variety of dry spices and a host of sauces!

Let folks make their own, just pre-measure and make the tomato base and lime juice, and let the rest of the ingredients be “self-serve”

If you’re making Micheladas for a group, make the primary ingredients in a carafe. Place chilled glasses nearby on ice. Place any seasonings and sauces nearby as well. Allow guests to rim their own glass, pour the base ingredients into their ice filled beer glass, and top with a cold beer!

If you want to get fancy, have a bowl of cooked shrimp on ice to add as a garnish! This isn’t typical for the classic Mexican Michelada Cocktail, but it does taste terrific! I also like to serve these with fried oysters and fried catfish!

Michelada With Clamato Juice

A michelada made with clamato juice, is sometimes also called a ‘Cuban michelada.’ The preparation method for this beverage is the same as the one we described earlier . Here, the only difference is that before you pour in your beer, you need to add a little bit of clamato and then mix in the sauces and the lime. A little more than half of the glass should be made up of these ingredients.

Some places put a straw covered with a typical Mexican spicy-sweet sugar mixture in the drink, making it into a ‘chamochela,’ or you could just add a stalk of celery. Another option would be to put a couple of shrimp on the rim, or even on a skewer inside of the glass. In reality, the possibilities are endless when it comes to the combination of ingredients that you can put into micheladas, and you can really let your imagination go wild.

Mayanik Mexican Hot Sauce

Mayanik was produced in the 1990s and the manufacturing plant can be found in Merida, Yucatan.

This plants location leads towards the name as it was the place that the ancient Mayans once lived.

Habañero peppers are used all through their three hot sauces:

The level of heat depends on when the pepper was picked and used for the sauce.

So, when you taste a hot habañero sauce, the pepper may have been picked later than the green habañero sauce.

Because of the amount of vinegar in this hot sauce, its consistency is watery, and it has a strong acidity.

Now, add a bit of hot sauce to a Bloody Mary, and that cocktail is now amplified.

There are a few combinations that you can pull off with hot sauce:

How To Make A Michelada Cocktail

  • Rim the edges of two tall glasses or beer mugs with a lime wedge, then turn the glasses upside down to dip first into the salt and then into Tajín and coat the rims. You can also mix both, the salt and Tajin to make a single mixture.
  • Add half a cup of ice cubes to each glass.
  • Add the lime juice, Maggi Sauce, Tabasco Sauce, and Worcestershire sauce and mix with a spoon. You can also mix all these four ingredients in a small bowl and pour them evenly between each glass.
  • Now, open your beers and slowly pour one beer into each glass. Make sure you tilt your glass at a 45 angle when pouring to prevent too much foam. Decorate with a wedge of lime and enjoy!

How To Make The Best Micheladas & Michelada Mix Recipe

Were making Micheladas today!

If youre not familiar, the michelada is a light and refreshing savory beer cocktail made with a Mexican lager, tomato juice, hot sauce, lime juice and a few other savory sauces like the Worcestershire sauce, and there are so many ways you can prepare them. Ive had sweet fruit micheladas before where they add sliced fruit, fruit juice, lime juice and hot sauce, but I personally prefer the savory ones.

When I was developing this recipe, I wanted to make sure I kept the Michelada nice and light, I didnt want it to feel like I was drinking a thick Bloody Mary. My recipe is similar to the Micheladas youll find in Cancun, or as they call them, Ojo Rojo, where it uses Clamato, lime juice, a mild hot sauce , Worcestershire sauce, and Jugo Maggi. The result is a delicious red beer, where everything is nicely balanced and you can taste every single ingredient in it. This recipe makes 2 1/2 cups of the Michelada mix, so you can store the mix in your fridge and reach for it after a long day at work, or on the weekend when youre at home relaxing.

Have you heard of a Michelada? You might have seen this chelada recipe, which includes fresh lime juice and a Mexican beer. But, a michelada is a tad more complex. Probably the easiest way to describe a traditional michelada is a cross between a Bloody Mary and a red beer .

The Origins Of The Chavela

A Chavela is a type of Cerveza Preparada a variety of Mexican beer cocktails. The drink is prepared with tomato juice, lime juice, hot sauce, and of course, a beer. Similarly to a Bloody Mary, it’s often served with a salt rim but without the cocktail’s signature celery stick.

Michelada and Chavela nomenclature overlaps ingredients and names can interchange based on who’s mixing. Regardless, the Chavela does have a few generally defining characteristics. Its base beer is typically a clara, a lighter, clearer lager than the Michelada’s oscura, an amber ale. Additionally, this beer cocktail usually is simpler, without additions like Worcestershire Sauce or clam juice. The lower intensity makes it frequently paired with a tequila shot, which can be mixed in or served on the side, reports Craft Beering.

Chavelas originated in Mexico during the ’40s, devised by bar owners to elongate beer-drinking experiences and increase profits from one case of beer. Now popularized as a hangover cure, Chavelas are frequent candidates for Sunday happy hours on both sides of the border .
