How To Make BBQ Sauce 3 Ways

VeganWorcestershire Sauce: What make BBQ sauce richer and flavorful are fruits and vegetables. Instead of cooking them for hours, I used shop-bought vegan Worcestershire sauce. Anni’s Homegrown is vegan.

Sugar: I use brown cane sugar for this recipe. It’s not washed out by bone char. The base of this recipe is tomato. How much sugar you would like to add is totally up to you. The amount of sugar I use is much less than shop-bought barbecue sauce.

Vinegar: I use balsamic vinegar. If you do not have it, apple cider vinegar can be used. Both are tasty.

Garlic: I recommend to use a tiny bit of fresh garlic for this recipe. This deepens the flavour.

How Long Can You Store Homemade Bbq Sauce

Great question! While many store-bought BBQ sauces are packed with so many ingredients and preservatives that the shelf life is years, this BBQ sauce contains only 12 ingredients, and will last up to a week in the fridge.

Because this recipe makes about 2 cups of sauce, its perfect to use when grilling for a group, or if youre making multiple BBQ recipes throughout a week to ensure you use it all up!

What Is The Best Barbecue Sauce Lets Discuss

Yep, I am going there. BBQ sauce is both regional and personal, and I do have a favorite.

I grew up on Kansas City barbecue, and every time Ben and I visit, grabbing a meal at a local BBQ joint isnt an optional activity we try to squeeze inits one of the first stops we make the moment we land at the airport.

Ive had the pleasure of munching barbecue in different regions of the country, and while I respect and enjoy the different flavors and characteristics of each, Kansas Citystyle barbecue sauce is my forever favorite.

If youve had Sweet Baby Rays or KC Masterpiece brand BBQ sauce, youve experienced a hint of just how good Kansas City BBQ sauce can be. That said, as Ive started reading more labels in recent years, the bottled barbecue sauce brands are LOADED with sugar .

Craving some barbecue but not wanting to rely on the the sugary stuff, I decided to see if I could make my own homemade barbecue sauce for ribs, pulled pork, and, as I quickly discovered while making and tasting this sauce, for licking right off the spoon!

Skip the bottled stuff. By using real, unprocessed ingredients, youll have an award winning barbecue sauce recipe that tastes, well, homemade.

Is Bbq Sauce Easy To Make

Barbecue Sauce {How to Make From Scratch!}

BBQ sauce is sooo easy to make. I didnt start making my own sauces until a few years ago because I just assumed it was super complicated. The fact is, its about the easiest thing you can make. You can use either a medium saucepan or a slow cooker. I prefer the slow cooking method because its less work, but either way the sauce is delicious.

Just like my Kansas City style sauce, I recommend making this sauce a day before youll need it. I find the flavors come together better after sitting for a day or so, but you can certainly use it the same day. When you store it, be sure to keep it in a glass container because it will stain plastic.

Bbq Sauce Flavor Profiles

Four basic barbecue sauce flavor profiles combine in varying degrees, balancing one another so the sauce is not too sweet or too spicy.

Sweet: Typically, sweetness comes from brown sugar, but you can substitute or supplement with molasses, white sugar, maple syrup, honey, soft drinks or corn syrup.

Tangy: Tang is the acid component that starts with tomato but is usually boosted with white, apple cider or other flavored vinegars and acidic fruit juices.

Salty: Salt brings it all togetherthe sweet, the tang and the heat. We recommend kosher salt because its less salty than iodized salt, but you can also use smoked salt, celery salt, onion salt or other seasoned salt.

Spicy: Your sauce needs a little kick to balance out the sweetness. Black pepper brings basic heat, but you can turn it up with peppers, hot sauces and chili powders like ancho, cayenne and chipotle.

Best Way To Store Homemade Sauces

How to Make Honey BBQ Sauce (Better than Store-bought!)

I prefer old fashioned Mason jars for storing sauces. However, I dont like the metal lids since they rust and therefore arent super reusable so I buy special lids that are dishwasher friendly and are easy to put on and take off.

You can buy reusable lids in plastic or glass. The plastic lids arent always 100% leak proof but work great if youre storing things upright. Wek brand jars use a glass lid that seals well. So depending on your use, you may want to check into that brand. You can shop everything on Amazon of course. Here are some links to get you started:

Which Foods Go Best With Bbq Sauce

Of course, BBQ sauce is best enjoyed over barbecued meats. There are few things that are as triumphantly indulgent as a good barbecued brisket with a generous slathering of this delicious sauce. But youre likely not barbecuing every day, and you might have some homemade BBQ sauce left over. What else can we use our BBQ sauce on?

  • Homemade BBQ sauce goes beautifully on grilled chicken.
  • You can brush it over chicken wings before cooking.
  • Toss it with pulled pork for incredible sandwiches. Actually, it goes great with pork in general.
  • Makes for an absolutely incredible topping for homemade hamburgers.
  • You can use it as a dip for foods such as chicken nuggets or chicken tenders.
  • If youre a fried chicken fan, this is also a great topping.
  • Spread it over a meatloaf to bump it up a couple of notches.
  • It goes fantastically with baked beans.
  • Absolutely perfect for BBQ chicken pizza.
  • Believe it or not, you can even drizzle it over a salad.

Alabama White Bbq Sauce

Alabama white BBQ sauce is a thin, mayonnaise and vinegar-based sauce that’s best with chicken and pork. It’s one of the few popular sauces with a known inventor: “Big” Bob Gibson, a former railroad worker from Decatur, Ala.

Gibson entertained friends and family with huge weekend cookouts, and began mixing mayonnaise with vinegar as a basting sauce for smoked chicken. When he opened his first restaurant in 1925, the white sauce made the menu. The sauce’s popularity grew along with the restaurant and is now identified as the classic Alabama BBQ sauce.

How To Make Homemade Bbq Sauce

Step 1: Combine all ingredients for the sauce in a medium size mixing bowl and whisk together to combine thoroughly.

Step 2: Pour sauce into slow cooker or medium size sauce pan. If youre using the slow cooker select low heat, place the lid on it, and you can pretty much let it go for an hour or two. If youre using the sauce pan, place over very low heat and put the lid on to prevent splatters. Whisk every 10 minutes to prevent the sauce from burning for an hour.

Step 3: Let sauce cool to room temperature before transferring into a glass container and storing in the refrigerator.

1. Combine ingredients. Add all ingredients to a large saucepan and mix together until smooth.

2. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until mixture comes to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes or up to one hour, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and allow to cool. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cools.

3. Serve. Slather this stuff on just about anything or store in an air tight container or jar in the fridge for up to 3 weeks.

Double it? I love to make this sauce and keep it in the fridge for several weeks. Depending on your family size you could double the recipe to make a bigger batch. Its delicious for dipping/marinating grilled chicken, spooning on hamburgers or ribs, or dipping as a sauce. Its my go-to when I dont have a dinner plan.

How To Make Coca Cola Bbq Sauce Recipe

Heres how my Mama makes her BBQ sauce.

Add ketchup to a small sauce pan over low to medium heat.

Next add in your Worcestershire sauce , along with your Stone House Seasoning. If you do not have Stone House Seasoning on hand, you can simply combine 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, and ¼ teaspoon garlic powder for this recipe.

And of course some delicious Coca-Cola, or Coke.

Next comes the brown sugar.

And a few dashes of hot sauce for that bit of spicy kick.

This sauce works great with any meats, but is especially good with chicken and pork.

To make this homemade BBQ Sauce, youll need:

    North Carolina Vinegar Bbq Sauce

North Carolina vinegar sauce is the closest to the “original” BBQ sauce of Early America. Used as both a baste during cooking and a sauce for dipping, the main components are vinegar and hot peppers. The acidity of the vinegar cuts the fat of pork which is the most commonly BBQd meat in North Carolina, and the pepper adds flavor.

What Are The Different Types Of Bbq Sauce

Learning about BBQ sauce means taking a virtual road trip. Every type of sauce is associated with a specific region — or even a specific city. The differences came about because of the types of meat that were commonly available in the local area, and the people who populated it.

Regions that cooked strong flavored meats like beef or mutton tend to have thinner sauces with tart or spicy flavors that complement those cuts. Regions that cooked more subtly flavored meats like pork or chicken typically made thicker, sweeter sauces that add additional flavor.

Areas with large populations of German immigrants, like South Carolina, used their homeland’s favorite condiment, mustard, as the base for BBQ sauce. In Hawaii, with a heavy influx of immigrants from Japan, soy sauce is the main ingredient. Folks who’ve arrived from other countries have adapted the sauces they already used to BBQ-style cooking which is why we can now enjoy Korean and Chinese BBQ .

These are some of the most popular BBQ sauces.

Homemade St Louis Style Bbq Sauce

    The BEST BBQ Sauce recipe!

St. Louis style sauce differs from Kansas City style sauce, despite these cities both being in Missouri. BBQ is funny that way, from one side of a state to another, flavor profiles change. In this case, youll find the St. Louis style sauce to be a bit more tangy and less sweet than the Kansas City style sauce.

    Jump to Recipe |

The tangy profile comes from the addition of yellow mustard and a touch more vinegar. Its excellent on spare ribs or pork steaks because the acidity matches very well with the fattiness of those meats. As much as I love this sauce on ribs, it certainly shouldnt be limited to just those. Read on

    Kansas City Bbq Sauce

Now we bring BBQ sauce forward to the relatively recent past. The introduction of mass-produced ketchup gave cooks a simple way to add sweetness to their vinegar and pepper sauces. This sweeter sauce played a little better with folks who hadn’t grown up eating the traditional sauces. Most of the commercially available BBQ sauces and sauce recipes you’ll find are tomato-based, like Kansas City BBQ sauce.

Tomato-based BBQ sauce wasn’t invented in Kansas City, but the city is home to so many classic BBQ spots that the style and the sauce came to be associated with KC.

A classic KC sauce still contains the vinegar and pepper of the traditional sauce, but adds a thick blend of ketchup, brown sugar, and molasses for a sweet, sticky, silky texture. The sauce is usually added near the end of cooking. Our Traeger ‘Que BBQ Sauce is similar to KC-style.
