How To Make Sugar-Free Sweet Chilli Sauce

I was wondering how I could make a low carb sweet chili sauce that could be thickened up without having to use cornstarch, sugar or honey. The greatest aspect of a Thai sweet chili sauce is its stickiness and sweetness. You have to use so much sugar to get that perfect consistency.

There aren’t many products that are similar to honey in the low carb world, so I used orange marmalade for this recipe. You can check out my homemade Sugar Free Thai Sweet Chili Sauce recipe here.

You really have to make sure to find a sugar-free version though! All but one marmalade brand at my grocery store contained sugar so you really have to look at the label carefully! Most brands will include either sucralose, maltodextrin or asparatame so make sure your marmalade is only sweetened with the orange fruit.

I altered the Thai sweet chili sauce recipe so that it would end up spicier and more red in colour. I used a combination of chili oil, red pepper flakes, tabasco, thinly sliced dried red chilies, and some paprika powder! Because the sauce was cooked down in the frying pan, it became even more sticky and red!

For me, that was the perfect Sweet Chili Chicken recipe! You can even use this Thai sweet chili sauce recipe over some of my Keto tempura with let’s say, shrimp, and make some sweet chili shrimp!

How Long Can You Keep It

You can keep it for up to a week in the fridge. Make sure to store it in a sealed container. It may congeal a little in the fridge but heat it for a few seconds at a time in the microwave and stir through to return it to a more pourable consistency.

You can also freeze this for up to 3 months. A good idea is to portion it into ice cube trays so you can pop a portion out when you want. Again it may congeal when its defrosted, but heat it slightly and stir thoroughly to return it to a thinner consistency.

Chillies I use a mix of serrano, jalapeño, and bishops crowns. If you do not want it to be spicy scrape out all the seeds and membranes from the chillies. Alternatively you can just use a tablespoon of chilli flakes for a milder sweet chilli sauce.

Sweetener I use Sukrin Gold, but any sweetener can be used in this sauce.

Garlic add more garlic if you wish, but remember to add the carbs as well.

Vinegar I use apple cider vinegar but you can just use regular white vinegar if that is all you have.
