Making sauces with Greek yogurt is easier than you might think.

In a medium saucepan, first melt the butter over medium heat. Then stir in the garlic powder, then add milk or water and stir again. Take it off the heat and allow it to cool for about 2-3 minutes, then whisk in the Greek yogurt a little bit at a time until its fully incorporated.

Next, add the parmesan cheese into the sauce and stir until thats all melted and the sauce if smooth and creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste and add on top of your favorite cooked pasta noodles. Thats really all there is to it!

Do I Have To Use Fresh Herbs

When fresh herbs are readily available or when you already have them on hand, they are fabulous in this dip. But thats not to say that dried herbs wont work as wellthey totally will! You just have to tweak the amounts since dried herbs are approximately three times more potent than fresh. So for this recipe, youd use 1 tablespoon dried parsley plus 1 teaspoon dried dill in place of the fresh herbs.

You should also feel free to switch up the types of herbs in this Greek Yogurt Dip. I used fresh parsley and dill, but if you dont have those or prefer other flavors, simply make the swap! Chives, basil, cilantro, or even thyme would all give this recipe a different and yummy spin.

Tzatziki Nutrition & Yogurt Notes

Nutritionally speaking, tzatziki is a creamy but light sauce. You can dollop it generously on your food without adding a lot of calories . Its made mostly with Greek yogurt and cucumber, after all.

I havent found a noticeable difference in texture whether I use whole-milk yogurt, low-fat or non-fat, so any of those will work. Traditional Greek tzatziki is made with strained goat or sheeps yogurt, but its hard to find those here. The Greek yogurt sold here in the U.S. is strained yogurt , so I use that.

As always, please let me know how you like this recipe in the comments! Im excited to hear how it turns out for you and how you serve it.

Can You Make Greek Tzatziki Sauce Ahead

Yes, you can definitely make Greek tzatziki sauce recipe ahead of time. In fact, I like to make mine ahead of time so that the flavors have time to meld together.

Ideally, make it at least 30 minutes before you want to serve it, though you can certainly serve it immediately if need be.

TIP: If your tzatziki sauce is watery after being in the fridge for a while, simply drain off any extra liquid.

Creamy Greek Yogurt Dressing

Greek Yogurt Sauce

This wonderfully light and creamy yogurt dressing is a cinch to make and is delicious on just about anything, even grilled meats.

This light, tangy and creamy yogurt dressing is featured in the April/May issue of Fine Cooking and comes from chef Ana Sortun, who owns the celebrated Eastern Mediterranean restaurants Oleana and Sofra in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Sortun pairs the dressing with a Shredded Romaine, Arugula & Cucumber Salad but I can tell you its delicious on just about anything, even grilled meats. I love it so much that I already bought Sortuns cookbook, Spice: Flavors of the Eastern Mediterranean, and am thinking about making a pilgrimage to Cambridge

The What Herb Do You Dig Dill Sounds Good Move

I offend a lot of people when I call this dill yogurt tzatziki-esque. No, its not tzatziki. No, youre wrong. Theres no cucumber. No, you dont know anything about Greek food, you idiot. So now, in an effort to ease yogurt-instigated tension, I just call this dip or condiment dill yogurt. Because really, thats what it is.

All you need to do is hit Greek yogurt with a generous amount of the chopped herb of your choicein this case, dillfreshly ground black pepper, grated garlic, a squeeze of lemon juice, flaky sea salt, and a glug of olive oil. Using a Microplane to grate the raw garlic helps it spread throughout the dip evenly, and using flaky salt gives you intense pockets of seasoning. Once youve mixed the first six ingredients together, finish it with a pour of olive oil, so all the yogurt valleys get filed with liquid gold. It looks nice too. And yes, thats important.

Pro Tips For The Greek Yogurt Dressing Recipe With Honey & Mustard

  • use ONLY Greek yogurt for this dressing recipe, yogurts with less fat in the composition tend to become watery in combination with other ingredients and especially vegetables
  • prepare the Greek yogurt dressing immediately before use or store it in the refrigerator for a short time
  • if you like the hot taste, use a spicy mustard type
  • this Greek yogurt dressing sauce has a balanced sweet-sour taste given that the proportion of honey and mustard is equal this can be modified by changing the proportions, respectively adding extra honey for a sweeter taste and extra mustard for a more sour taste
  • the amount of garlic can also be changed, I usually add 2 teaspoons of granulated garlic for a stronger garlic flavor
  • in addition to parsley, you can use other aromatic herbs such as mint, dill, coriander, or basil

A few years ago, I came across a real-deal, authentic tzatziki sauce recipe from the Greek island of Paros where Stella Leonetti served it regularly in her restaurant called Rafeletti. My friend Cheryl Sternman Rule featured it in her book Yogurt Culture, and I stayed pretty close to the original recipe, except I’ve pared it down for a smaller crowd.

  • How Long Does It Stay Good

    Greek Yogurt Sauce

The sauce should stay good in your refrigerator for 5-7 days and the flavor will intensify as it refrigerates. For that reason, I used minced garlic from a jar rather than fresh. I find that fresh garlic leaves me with the most unbearable breath for a good 24 hrs no matter how many times I brush and gargle with mouthwash. Garlic from a jar is a little more subtle.

I was pleasantly surprised to find cucumbers on sale 7 for $1 at our produce market today so that really brought the price of this sauce down. Unfortunately, they are only this cheap for a short time during the summer.

Dont let the rest of the cucumber go to waste. Slice it up for dipping into the Tzatziki, layering on sandwiches and salads or as a garnish!

    How To Make Garlic Sauce

Making toum, or touma, from scratch is simple, but its all about the very slow and steady emulsification process that whips the garlic and oil together with the help of lemon juice and a bit of ice water. Traditionally, a morter and pestle are used to make this garlic sauce recipe, but I have found a small food processor to work just as well. Here is how to make it:

    • Mince the garlic and kosher salt together. First, pulse the peeled and sliced garlic and 1 teaspoon of kosher salt in a small food processor until the garlic appears minced.
    • Add lemon juice. Pour in juice of one lemon and pulse again a few times to combine.
    • Slowly slowly slowly add the oil and alternate with a bit of ice water, while the processor is running. Drizzle about ¼ cup of the oil very slowly from the top opening of the food processor . Add about 1 tablespoon of ice water and keep the processor going. Continue to do this using ¼ cup of oil at a time and alternating with the ice water until the oil is finished and the garlic sauce has thickened and increased in volume (it should look whipped and fluffly. This process can take a good 10 minutes, do not rush it!

Can I Make Tzatziki Using Sour Cream

How to Make Greek Yogurt Sauce – Easy Homemade Greek Yogurt Dip Recipe

Yes, you can substitute sour cream for the Greek yogurt 1:1.

Tzatziki is traditionally made with strained sheep or goats yogurt, but that can be very hard to find in the U.S. Thats why I opt to use Greek yogurt, which is a strained yogurt thats both thicker and higher in protein than regular yogurt.

While I most prefer using full-fat Greek yogurt, Ive also made this recipe with non-fat Greek yogurt and it turned out very well.

The recipe uses non-fat plain Greek yogurt to give the donuts their moist, cakey flavor. Best Tips For Making Tzatziki Sauce

Make sure your grated cucumber is well-drained. If you have time, you can drain it in cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve overnight. I prefer the sieve as you can use it over and over. If you need one of these, snag it on Amazon from one of the two links below:

    • Cheesecloth

If youre in a rush, you can use your hands to squeeze the liquid out of the cucumber.

The longer the garlic rests in the yogurt, the less sharp bite it will have and the better it will taste.

For best results, combine all of the ingredients except for the cucumber and dill, then let it rest overnight in the fridge while your cucumber is draining.

Add the dill at the last minute so it doesnt overwhelm the rest of the flavors.

Also, if you are looking for a vegan tzatziki sauce or a dairy free tzatziki sauce, then just use coconut milk yogurt instead of Greek yogurt.

This is so tangy and delicious perfect spread over some warm bread!

    Healthy Gluten Free Alfredo Sauce

Top your pasta with this healthier alfredo sauce! This Healthy Gluten Free Alfredo Sauce recipe is lower in fat and calories and higher in protein than traditional alfredo sauce, and its low carb

The other day one of my students asked me to re-create one of her husbands favorite foods: Alfredo Sauce. She wanted me to develop a lower calorie and healthy alfredo sauce recipe that her whole family could enjoy. I gladly accepted the challenge and created this recipe.

I usually dont create dairy-based recipes, but since she asked and my husband could taste-test, I gave it a shot. Since I couldnt eat this sauce , I experimented on my husband and he loved it! You could even make this into a dip by reducing the milk and adding some other spices/seasonings!

I served this sauce over with sautéed onion and zucchini and Al Fresco Chicken Italian Sausage over whole wheat thin spaghetti and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top.

I love the Al Fresco Chicken sausages: I have tried the Italian and the Buffalo style and they both are delicious, have natural ingredients, and are lower in calories and fat than many poultry sausages . Plus, they are more affordable than some of the other natural gourmet sausages out there.

This sauce is thick and tasty! You can adjust the thickness by adding more milk if you want it a bit thinner. Play around with the spices: you can add some basil, oregano, and thyme if you want more Italian herb flavors.
