Aldi’s Curry Sauces Got A Serious Upgrade

ALDI Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce Review + Easy Crockpot Recipe | Meal Prep

Aldi, being a European-based chain, has no shortage of gourmet goodies imported from across the pond. They’re all about keeping up with the times, though, so they’re constantly introducing new items with more of a global flavor profile. In fact, according to Aisle of Shame, Aldi’s even introduced a bi-yearly Asian week, just as they also celebrate with Greek weeks, Italian weeks, and German weeks.

The first Asian week for 2021 is taking place from February 10 to 16 and Aldi’s specials for this week include pot stickers, crunchy rice rolls, kung pao chicken egg rolls, and wonton soup . Although south Asian countries typically don’t celebrate Lunar New Year, Aldi’s still including them in the Asian celebration with such items as tandoori-spiced chips and their popular curry sauces.

Big news with the curry sauces, however! According to Aldi’s website, all three varieties butter chicken, korma, and tikka masala now come with dry spices, which is something that Instagrammer aldi.mademedoit says was not the case last year .

Indian Food Aldi Style Part : The Regular Buys

EDITORS NOTES:

  • This post contains a rundown of Aldi Regular Buy Indian food. You can find brief takes on some of their ALDI Finds items here. Keep in mind that Aldi sometimes shifts food from one category to another, so what is a Regular Buy might become an ALDI Find, or vice versa. Also, some Regular Buys are regional, so what is a Regular Buy in one area may be an ALDI Find in another.
  • In 2019, Aldi reformulated its Journey to India Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce. You can read our review of the reformulated version here. Aldi has also released Cook House Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce, which you can read about here.

My husband and I love Indian food, but we live on a budget and cant always eat at restaurants. When we crave Indian food, we are mostly relegated to preparing meals at home with products from an international grocery store with an unreliable stock, from the small selection of offerings from Target, or from Aldi when it rolls out certain Special Buys. We even recently tried frozen Indian meals from Trader Joes, which is Aldis upscale cousin, and we were not impressed.

No store-bought Indian food so far has been as good as the food we get at restaurants, but we continue to try new things when we discover them.

Today well look at an array of Regular Buys.

On to the specifics:

Aldi Simmer Sauce Chicken Tikka Masala Recipe

The process couldn’t be easier. The home cook behind this recipe said they simply mixed raw chicken, peppers, onions, chickpeas, and Aldi’s simmer sauce together in the crockpot and let it cook on high for approximately four hours.

First, I chop an onion, a small head of cauliflower, and whatever bell peppers I have on hand into large pieces. Then I sauté the veggies with olive oil over medium-high heat in a deep pan.

Add Chicken And Veggies To Aldis Simmer Sauce For A Simple Supper

Chicken tikka masala is an Indian dish with British roots consisting of marinated boneless chicken cooked in a tandoor oven, served in a lightly-spiced tomato-cream sauce . With the help of Aldis simmer sauce, a few simple ingredients, and a slow cooker, Reddit user kindahealthy simplified this dish and posted a photo of it online. The caption announced, Love the tikka masala simmer sauce! I actually put it in the crock pot with cubed chicken breast, bell pepper, yellow onion, and chickpeas! Served over basmati rice and a side of naan!

Fellow Reddit users seem fully on board and shared comments like, We love it too! and Why have I never thought to do this in the crockpot?! Genius. Others offered suggestions for adding additional flavor, like user Fun_Project who said, I make something similar. I put the sauce, cubed chicken, and a can of coconut milk in my instant pot. Then I serve over rice or veggies. Lime juice, peanuts, and green onions are great toppings too. Journey To India Tikka Masala: The 45

Journey to India Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce

The 45-calorie version.

We first got word about this new reformulated Aldi tikka from others online in January of 2019, although we did not find it in our local stores until June 2019. Its easy to spot because it has 45 calories per serving rather than the original 70 calories.

Its a more dramatic reformulation from the original 70-calorie tikka. The 45-calorie version not only lacks coconut creme and garam masala like the 60-calorie version does, but it also has no cayenne pepper and lists water as its first ingredient. On the other hand, it is a little creamier than the 60-calorie tikka , although has about the same creaminess as the 70-calorie original. Also of note: this has the lowest fat content and sodium content of the three sauces.

Almost all of the chatter we saw online regarding this 45-calorie version was negative. After trying it ourselves, we found it to be rather bland. It has much less flavor than either the 70-calorie or even 60-calorie versions, and even adding some garam masala doesnt really fix it. Its not a terrible sauce, in our view at least some of our testers said it was okay but it was telling that, in our test, no one was really coming back for seconds or begging to get the leftovers. Its on par with forgettable sauces weve gotten at big box stores.

Journey To India Flavors Of The World Chicken Tikka Masala

The Journey to India Chicken Tikka Masala was also a new-to-me Special Buy frozen entree sold in the freezer section. It consists of white meat chicken in a bold tomato sauce simmered with tandoori spices and basmati rice.

Similar to the butter chicken, the tikka masala can be prepared in the microwave or in the oven. I baked both dishes for 35 minutes at 400 degrees.

This was the worst tikka masala Ive ever tasted. The dish didnt taste anything like tikka masala. It had no spice and very little flavor just a bland chicken and rice mixture. It definitely did not live up to the bold label on its box.

The Seasoning/sauce Combo Isn’t New To Every Aldi

Some Aldi fans seem to be really, really excited about this upgrade, measuring by the accelerated exclamation point use of the aforementioned Instagrammer: “These sauces for an upgrade! Last year they were sold with just the sauce and now they include seasoning!!! I want to grab the butter chicken this week!!!” Other commenters, however, were a bit confused by the announcement, saying they’d seen the spices sold with the curry sauces before and didn’t think it was anything new. One in-the-know Aldi fan cleared it up for everyone else, explaining, “They have two versions. The one with seasoning on top isn’t always available, but yes, I’ve been finding them for a couple years now too.” Yet another Instagram user pointed out, “I see they’re charging $.50 more for that seasoning,” although even with the upcharge, Aldi’s website lists this seasoning/sauce combo at a reasonable $2.49.

Okay, enough of the backstory. More importantly, how do they taste? Instagram comments all seemed to be pretty positive. The butter chicken had fans calling it “unreal,” “delicious,” and “amazing,” while the tikka masala and korma also got a few shout-outs. One user called all three sauces “THE BEST!,” saying “We love them all, but the seasoning takes it next level.” If you want to try these for yourself, though, better hurry! Asian Week is winding down now, and there’s no telling how long these sauces will stay on the shelves once it’s over.

Journey To India Flavors Of The World Indian Curry Vegetable Meal

We also tried the new-to-us Special Buy Journey to India Indian Curry Vegetable Meal, a bag of frozen vegetarian strips mixed with vegetables and basmati rice in a coconut curry sauce.

It takes five to six minutes to steam the meal in the bag in your microwave , or you can cook it on your stove top. The meat-like product in the meal is comprised of soy protein concentrate and is a decent imitation of chicken. The bulk of the rest of the meal includes rice, cubed potatoes, and red and green peppers.

This dish had a little more spice than the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Butter Chicken, and it tasted more authentic, but we didnt like it enough to want to purchase it again.

Specially Selected Dopiaza Curry Sauce

The 10 Must

This sauce is another Special Buy that comes in a jar, and on top of the jar is a small plastic cap full of spices.

To prepare, cook a small amount of diced meat or vegetables of your choice in a tablespoon of oil until browned. Sprinkle the contents of the spice cap onto the meat or vegetables and continue to stir fry for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the sauce and continue to simmer until the meat or vegetables are cooked through.

Of all the Specially Selected curry sauces, the Dopiaza was the best. It was actually quite good. I have not eaten Dopiaza before, so I cant compare it to other brands, but this sauce had just the right amount of spiciness and included some nice bits of sliced onion that made it taste more substantial. The Dopiaza tasted even better when I ate the leftovers for lunch the next day.

Journey To India Flavors Of The World Korma Simmer Sauce

This is a new Regular Buy at Aldi, sold in the condiments section of the store alongside the Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce mentioned directly above. The Korma Simmer Sauce is a creamy yellow curry sauce made with a variety of mild spices and coconut.

To prepare, heat oil in a saute pan, season chicken with salt and pepper and brown evenly in hot oil. Add onions and other vegetables along with the jar of simmer sauce. Cover pan and simmer over low heat for 10-12 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Enjoy with rice.

I used pre-cooked chicken and did not add vegetables. The jar does not indicate how much chicken to use, but I use 1 to 2 chicken breasts, depending on how saucy I want the meal to be. This sauce has a decent mild flavor, and tastes fine, but the Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce is more flavorful, tastes more authentic, and remains the winner in my book.

Journey To India Mini Chicken Tikka Samosas

Like the Journey to India Mini Vegetable Samosas, these come 12 to a box. Also like the Vegetable Samosas, they are cooked for 400 degrees for 18-20 minutes, turning halfway, and some of these also got a little stuck like their vegetable cousins. The Tamarind Dipping Sauce is prepared the same way as well.

We didnt like these quite as well as the Vegetable Samosas, mostly because the chicken tasted a little dry. They had about the same amount of spice as the veggie ones, though, and the Tamarind is just as good as the stuff in the Vegetable box.

How Is The New Sauce Different

Cook With Me – HALF HOMEMADE – Aldi Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce With Chicken (VERY EASY!)

In the past, Aldi has sold three other versions of tikka masala under the Journey to India label:

  • Journey to India Tikka Masala with 70 calories per serving and including ingredients such as coconut creme and garam masala. This was the best version by far.
  • Journey to India Tikka Masala with only 45 calories per serving. It was bland, tasting like tomato sauce with a minimum of seasoning, and it lacked ingredients like coconut creme and garam masala. Most online talk about the sauces was negative in regard to the 45-calorie version.
  • Journey to India Tikka Masala with 60 calories per serving. My family thought it was okay but not as good as the original. It still lacked some of the key ingredients the original sauce had.
  • A comparison of ingredients in the new Cook House Tikka Masala indicates that its nearly identical to Journey to India 45-calorie tikka masala. The first ingredient in both sauces is water, which is telling, and the rest of the ingredients are identical and in order after that.

The proportions of some of those ingredients may differ slightly because the Cook House sauce has 210 mg of sodium and 3 grams of fat versus the 45-calorie sauces 180 mg of sodium and 2.5 grams of fat. Both are healthier than the original Journey to India 70-calorie tikka masala, which had 330 mg of sodium and 4.5 grams of fat.
