The One For Sugar Lovers: Safeways Signature Select Pasta Sauce Marinara Jar 25 Oz

The Sauce: Safewayâs private label marinara is made from tomato paste, canola oil, dehydrated herbs and spices, and citric acidâand is the only brand we tried that contains added sugar.

The Taste: For most people the consistency was a little watery and the sauce too sweet. But the team came up with ways to overcome both. âIt needs more herbâ to add some complexity, says Aguiano. And it should be cooked longer, says Asbrink, to both reduce the wateriness and amplify the tomato flavors, which Gurjar agrees tasted almost âraw.â Still, the sauce wasnât totally unbalanced. âIâm getting a citrus vibe,â says Sinha.

The Verdict: This slightly too saccharine sauce has potential to be good she just needs a little help to really shine. Bring it to life as a pasta sauce by cooking it down with garlic, fresh herbs, salt, chile, and something âearthy and savory,â says Gurjar, like mushrooms or meat.

After trying many variations on marinara sauce, I adapted this recipe from Debs tomato sauce with onion and butter, which was originally sourced from Marcella Hazans 1992 cookbook, Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking.

    • Parmesan cheese: I highly recommend using a block of fresh Parmesan and grating your own for this simple spaghetti recipe. Pre-grated Parmesan cheese in a shaker contains cellulose as a filler and does not taste as fresh.
    • Extra virgin olive oil and fresh garlic: Youll need lots of minced garlic in this recipe which makes it just as flavorful as a homemade spaghetti sauce.
