1. Brown the ground beef: Add the olive oil to a large pot or Dutch oven set over medium-high heat. Brown the ground beef and use a wooden spoon or spatula to break it apart into smaller crumbles. After the meat is fully cooked, transfer it to a clean plate and set aside.

2. Cook the onions, green pepper, and garlic: Add the remaining olive oil to the same pot set over medium heat. Cook the onions for 5-7 minutes, or until soft and translucent, stirring often. Stir in the diced bell pepper and continue to cook for 3-4 minutes. Sprinkle with salt and stir in the minced garlic cloves. Cook, stirring continuously, for 1 minute.

  • What is Mirepoix? Mirepoix is a mix of aromatics made from finely diced vegetables that are cooked in butter or oil, low and slow as to sweeten the ingredients rather than caramelize them. These slow-cooked aromatic vegetables form the first layer of flavor in many recipes.
  • In this recipe, the mirepoix consists of onions, green bell pepper, and minced garlic.

3. Tomato paste and seasoning: Combine the tomato paste with the vegetables. Mix well to combine before adding the dried basil, thyme, oregano, salt, and black pepper. If you dont feel like purchasing individual jars of dried basil, thyme, and oregano, a simple mix of store-bought or homemade Italian seasoning will work.

    You Ignore The Portion Sizes

âPasta gets a bad reputation for being too high in carbs, but in fact, it can be part of a balanced diet,â says Ginger Hultin, MS, RDN, CSO, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. âA serving of pasta is two ounces or one cup, which equals about 75 to 100 calories.â

Many people eat much more than that and will often also add in French bread and several servings of high-fat meat like ground beef or sausage with cheese, she says. âThis can create a high calorie meal that exceeds saturated fat recommendations,â she explains. So, keep portions in check to avoid making this health mistake.

Why Should You Salt Your Pasta Water

Its a popular misconception that adding salt to your water will make it boil fasterit wont, but it will make it hotter. Its one degree warmer. So, unless you use an inedible amount of salt, youre not adding enough to make a difference. The true purpose of seasoning the pasta water is to season the noodles themselves.

The starch molecules stretch and expand when you drop pasta into boiling water. As the carbohydrates in the pasta leech into the water, space is formed in the noodles center to absorb liquid. If the water contains salt, the noodles will absorb it as well, seasoning the pasta from within. Because pasta is essentially simply wheat and water, this is a wonderful thing . Because it has no flavor on its own, unsalted pasta water produces bland noodles.

Its also not just about the noodle itself. When compared side by side, a dish made with salted pasta water tastes better overallnot only because the noodles are better. Youd have to season it with salt at the end, and itd just taste salty instead of seasoned.

To Cook The Best Spaghetti We Have A Few Simple Tricks

Check the package directions of the spaghetti you plan to cook. On the box, there should be an approximate cook time for al-dente, which means the pasta will be tender, but not mushy. It will still have a bit of a bite, which is perfect.

When you know the suggested cook time, set a timer for a minute or so before it. So if the box suggests 10 minutes, set a timer for 8 minutes.

This way, at the 8-minute mark, you can check on the spaghetti to make sure it isnt done already. The box directions are a helpful guide, but its always a good idea to check the pasta early!

Cook the spaghetti in salted water. The water should taste salty. This seasons the pasta as it cooks and is necessary for the best-tasting pasta.

Toss the cooked spaghetti with a flavorful sauce like our homemade spaghetti sauce. Dont just spoon the sauce on top of the pasta.

There are two kinds of meat ground beef and Italian pork sausage. I highly recommend adding both. The ground beef gives the sauce a great chunky texture, while the sausage is, well, completely delicious.

    You Dont Boil Enough Water

The water requirements for cooking pasta ma seem excessive, but donât ignore them. Thereâs a reason youâre supposed to have extra water in the past. When the pasta is added to the boiling water, it can lower the temperature of the water, which will stall cooking and may add minutes to your total time or impact your pastaâs texture. Make sure you have enough water in your pot so that adding pasta doesnât drastically drop the waterâs temperature, Underbrink says.
