Vegan Alfredo Sauce Ingredients
It’s rich and creamy with that cheesy flavor you love without any of the cheese. Traditionally, Alfredo sauce is made by the combination of Parmesan and butter.
Neither are used here to make for a healthier Alfredo sauce that whips up in the blender. Here are the major ingredients you’ll need:
- Raw cashews
Does It Really Taste Like Alfredo
I know what you are thinking.does it really taste like garlic alfredo sauce?? Well, my hubby said, spot on and then it really tastes exactly like garlic alfredo sauce. I was shocked. Ill let you be the judge. Id say it is pretty darn close, especially considering it doesnt have any of the typical ingredients!
Regardless, it is delicious and very creamy and you can eat this alfredo sauce without tons of guilt.
Other Vegan Alfredo Recipes to try:
Sadly, this recipe is my MOST popular weekly and is continuing to be stolen and copied and posted by other sites/blogs without ANY credit. It is very upsetting, so please know that I worked hard to create this recipe years back and it is my original creation. If you like this recipe, please give credit where credit is due.
Roasted Garlic Parmesan Alfredo
Pregoâs Roasted Garlic Parmesan Alfredo contains butter, cream, garlic, and parmesan cheese, says the companyâs website. We believe this to be the best option out of Pregoâs three Alfredo sauce varieties.
According to reviews on Walmart, many people like this sauce. It is very creamy, but not too thick. Some reviewers suggest that it is an exceptional ingredient to use in recipes like casseroles or lasagna. We are making a mental note to try this out immediately, though the notes from some reviewers about this sauceâs artificial taste make us a little apprehensive.
However, there are still some reviewers mentioning that this sauce needs to be doctored up a bit. Apparently, it is very common for consumers to buy Prego sauces as bases for their homemade concoctions. Are we the only ones that feel that a jarred sauce should be complete as is? This conundrum is having us question if we are the only ones that are lazy on weeknights.

Which Pasta Should I Serve With Alfredo Sauce
The classic pasta pairing is a vegan fettuccine alfredo because hearty sauces tend to work best with wider noodles. If you dont have fettuccine, then linguine, pappardelle, and tagliatelle make great alternatives.
We’ve used other wheat noodles in a pinch, and vegan alfredo pasta tastes pretty delicious no matter the shape of the noodle involved.
Ingredients In Dairy Free Alfredo Sauce
In keeping with our monthly theme, this sauce is completely free of nightshades. This being said, if you tolerate them well and would like to add a pinch of cayenne, feel free to do so!
Also, Im not including spices in this list. You can see those in the recipe card below. Dont worry theyre all basic, nightshade free spices.
- Cauliflower Youll be boiling the cauliflower to soften it, but if youd like to use frozen cauliflower florets, just microwave them instead. The idea is to soften the florets enough to make them easier to puree in the food processor.
- Onion Yellow or white onion will work just fine. If youre not a fan of onion or you dont tolerate it well, you can leave it out.
- Broth or Stock Obviously, vegetable broth is the best option, but if you dont need a vegan option, chicken works fine too.
- Coconut milk/cream This mimics dairy heavy whipping cream perfectly. Otherwise, you can always use any non dairy milk or cream of your choice.
- Nutritional yeast These little yellow flakes pack a big punch of nutty, cheesy flavor! So naturally, nutritional yeast is perfect for making a vegan and dairy free cauliflower alfredo sauce. If keeping the recipe dairy free and vegan isnt important to you, feel free to use grated or shaved Parmesan cheese instead.

Ingredient Substitutions And Additions
Don’t like Cashews? – While cashews work the best if you don’t love them, I have had luck subbing in raw slivered almonds into this sauce. I would just make sure to soak them a bit longer.
Nutritional Yeast – I’m not a fan personally, but if you are, you can add it to this sauce for some extra “cheesy” flavor. If you add it, I would stick with about ¼-1/3 of a cup.
Add Vegetables – I am a huge fan of adding things like sauteed mushrooms, spinach, kale, and even broccoli to alfredo. Feel free to add what you like.
Want more spice? Add in a bit of your favorite Italian seasoning for a bit more flare. You can even add a bit of cajun spice to make turn this into a cajun alfredo.

This Is The Easiest And Creamiest Gluten And Dairy
I’ve been making alfredo for my family even before my husband and I had kids. It’s probably one of his favorite sauces for pasta, especially since he is NOT a fan of spaghetti, haha. Even after I went gluten-free, I still found ways to enjoy this simple classic because who doesn’t love a good creamy sauce coating delicious pasta?
Enter our youngest, who doesn’t do too well with dairy. She’s like me, we can do some, but we definitely know about it if we get too much. It was actually her idea to figure out how to make this beloved family recipe but make it dairy-free so we can enjoy it just a bit more like my husband and her sister.
So I give you what we deemed to be our favorite gluten and dairy-free alfredo sauce because you need it in your life too.

Why You Need This Dairy Free Alfredo Sauce In Your Life
I think creamy pastas might be one of the first things you miss when you switch to a dairy free diet. Personally, the only thing I miss more is cheese itself.
For a while, we were making lactose free Alfredo sauce which is really just a creamy, garlic sauce using lactose-free milk. When we went fully dairy free, I just tried not to think about it, but, eventually, I found myself craving creamy, garlicky pasta.
I made a few different versions with store-bought vegan cream cheese. They were definitely good, but since I try really hard not to rely solely on those kinds of products, I didnt want to make it very often.
It wasnt until I started experimenting with cashew cream and my dairy free queso, that I realized the creamy base I was developing would work equally well as a pasta sauce. And, now I have a million different creamy pasta recipe ideas floating around in my head.
Can You Freeze Alfredo Sauce
You sure can! After you cook the vegan pasta sauce, allow it to cool completely. Pour the leftover sauce into freezer-safe containers or bags. Seal and leave in the freezer for up to 6 months.
When ready to use, simply transfer the sauce from the freezer to the fridge to thaw 24 hours before cooking with it. If you want to defrost your healthy alfredo sauce faster, place the sealed freezer bag in a bowl of warm water on your countertop until thawed.

Cashew Vs Cauliflower Alfredo:
Cashew Alfredo Sauce:
I find this version comes closest to a traditional Italian dairy-based Alfredo pasta sauce, both in terms of texture, taste, and color.
It is super quick to make taking only 10 minutes vs. 25 minutes for the cauliflower sauce.
Another bonus – there is no cooking involved if you remember to soak your cashews .
Cauliflower Alfredo Sauce:
This veggie-based vegan Alfredo is lower in calories. You can think of this sauce as a lightened up version as we are sneaking in some “hidden veggies” instead of relying on calorie-dense nuts as a base. A great nut-free alternative in case of intolerance/allergies. It’s also more budget-friendly. Find the recipe here.
A Quick And Easy Meal
Pasta dinners should be an easy go-to, even when they require a homemade sauce! My vegan alfredo sauce can be prepared ahead of time and literally takes 5 minutes! The only thing you need to do is boil up a pot of gluten-free fettuccine, which takes about 10-12 minutes . You may come home from work, hungry, short on time, and with an army of other hungry mouths to feed, but you have this delicious solution to save the day!

Tips For Making This Vegan Cashew Alfredo Sauce:
- If you are short on time or forgot to soak the cashews, you can boil them instead. Place cashews in a pot, cover with water and boil for 10 minutes or so. Continue with the recipe as written.
- The vegan cashew sauce tends to thicken in the fridge and sometimes when cooking. If it’s the case, simply add a bit more water to thin it out as needed.
- If you already made my cashew cream, simply add it to the blender with the rest of the sauce ingredients .
- For a dairy-free alfredo sauce using cauliflower instead of cashews, see this recipe.
- You can add spices to change the flavor. Think curry powder, some smoked paprika or chipotle, maybe even some honey and a teaspoon of mustard if you want a dairy-free sauce to go with your grilled chicken.
The Secret To The Sauce
The secret to making this sauce the perfect texture is tapioca starch . The tapioca starch thickens the sauce giving it a stretchy cheese texture that stays consistent even after it starts to cool down.
*You can use corn starch, arrowroot, or potato starch instead of the tapioca starch, for a similar effect, but nothing matches the stretchy constancy of the tapioca starch. The other types of starch will also thicken and get gloppy once the sauce cools, whereas the tapioca starch will maintain its constancy even after the dish cools down.
I learned the miracles of tapioca starch when perfecting my stretchy vegan grilled cheese recipe. It is the secret ingredient that makes my cheese recipe stretch.

What Can I Add To Jarred Alfredo Sauce
To the jar add at least 3 additions to the store bought sauce to give it a fresher taste. I like to add 1 tablespoon real butter, 1/3 cup cream, 2 t fresh, minced garlic, 1/4 c fresh grated Parmesan, 1/2 c steamed fresh broccoli, a sprinkle of garlic salt, fresh black pepper, and a little bit of fresh or dried basil.
What Can You Substitute For Milk Or Heavy Cream In Alfredo Sauce
In my dairy-free alfredo sauce recipe, Im using cashews that have been soaked and blended to create a creamy and rich texture to replace the milk or heavy cream.
In other recipes, Ive also seen canned coconut milk used to substitute for heavy cream in dairy-free and vegan alfredo sauces.
Now that weve laid the groundwork, I decided to make new dairy-free version of alfredo sauce for my friend, but also for myself. I wanted to see if I still liked it and if a dairy-free version would be worth my effort and taste buds.
And guess what? Ive fallen in love with it.
This homemade dairy-free alfredo sauce is:
- Easy to make
- Made with no coconut milk
- Insanely flavorful
- Amazing on pasta, pizza, or chicken
- Requires no cooking
While Ive gone close to 15 years without eating alfredo sauce, I have to say this might be one of my new favorite recipes. Its so creamy and rich, and just delicious!
