Dave might tout his fame, but he only achieved notoriety among our judges. Worst: Sweet Baby Ray’s Original
This BBQ sauce has both high fructose corn syrup and modified corn starch. So that means it’s high in sugar and carbs, and lacking in real nutrition.
“Along with these ingredients, Sweet Baby Ray’s has a large amount of added sugar in their BBQ sauce, which is known to lead to weight gain and poor gut health,” says Best.
How Much Sauce Should I Use
You dont need to load up your meat with gallons of sauce to get a great result. Remember, the flavor of the meat and the smoke should really be the stars of the show.
One or two coats of sauce on your meat while it cooks is enough. Meathead Goldwyn of Amazingribs.com gives a rough guide:
A full slab of spareribs with the tips still on will need at least 3/4 cup of a thick sauce for both sides, a slab of St. Louis cut ribs will need 1/2 cup, and a slab of baby back ribs will need 1/3 cup.
If your guests are big fans of barbecue sauce, you can always put some more sauce out on the table so they can top up if they like.

G Hughes Sugar Free Bbq Sauce Original
Unlike the other sauce-testants, this one was sweetened with sucralose. And while that might be a win for people looking to regulate their sugar intake, it sure didnt hit the sweet spot with our panel. Though they werent alerted to a faux-sugar sauce in the lineup, two testers seemed to sniff out the impostor, both likening it to Diet Coke. Others found it to be overly sweet, and as one put it, not the good kind of sweet. A couple others found the cinnamon notes to be overpowering. One taster summarized the reaction: Oh gosh, no.

Jack Daniel’s Sweet & Spicy Barbecue Sauce
Yes, Jack Daniel’s Sweet & Spicy Barbecue Sauce is made with real, genuine Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. No, it won’t leave you tipsy, even if you overdose on a trough of barbecue chicken. What makes this sauce notable is the zing you get from the spiciness that tastes like a combination of red pepper and jalapeno. It’s not a powerful punch of spicy, but it’s just enough to make you sit up straight and recognize its presence.
Additionally, Jack Daniel’s Sweet & Spicy Barbecue Sauce wins bonus points for its quality ingredients that include dark brown sugar and blackstrap molasses. Obviously, the history of this barbecue sauce doesn’t date all the way back to 1866 when Jack Daniel started his distillery business, but it’s worthy to have the name attached.
The sauce isn’t the best option for pork, but it works well with beef, chicken, and some seafood, specifically shrimp. You can use it as a dipping sauce but it really shines when it’s used for basting.
Whole Foods Market Barbecue Sauce
Another wallflower at the cookout here. Lacks depth of flavor just kind of thin and flat, remarked one of the panelists. A couple of people likened it to its tamer condiment cousin, ketchup. Like a sad ketchup, one summed it up, Like ketchup pretending to be BBQ. Not everyone minded the meekness, though. A little mild compared to the others, but not in a bad way, said one.

Rufus Teague Honey Sweet Bbq Sauce
According to the label, Rufus Teague made some barbecue sauce, put it in a jar, and shared it with his boys. It was so good, his boys pestered him until he made another batch. And from there, this sauce spread from Kansas City to the rest of the country. Give Rufus Teague Honey Sweet BBQ Sauce a taste and you too will be hankering for more once you run out.
Most barbecue sauces that try to incorporate honey are failures but this one is a home run. It has a sweet taste but the sweetness has depth due to the perfect mix of honey, brown sugar, white sugar, molasses, orange juice concentrate, and raisin paste. Its like an orchestra of heavenly nectar that everyone with a sweet tooth can enjoy.
The label also says Rufus Teague Honey Sweet BBQ Sauce is damn good. If two words were needed to describe this sauce, those were two wisely chosen words. Its impossible to disagree.

Trader Joes Organic Kansas City Style Bbq Sauce
For a couple of tasters, the grocery chains sauce struck the right notes of the barbecue-sauce trifecta: sweet, tang and spice. A well-balanced sauce, said one. Zingy but sweet, enthused another. But it didnt universally impress. Are we sure this isnt just aged ketchup? wondered one.

Barbecue sauce is a serious and highly debatable topic. Depending on which BBQ enthusiast you ask, the best barbecue sauce can range from vinegary Carolina-style to thick and a little sweet, like youd find in Kansas City. In an ideal world, youd be able to make your barbecue sauce from scratch every time, but bottled barbecue sauces have come a long way .
With clean ingredients and that bold barbecue-y taste youre looking for, these are the best barbecue sauces you can find on the shelves.

Worst: Kraft Sweet Honey Bbq
Kraft’s BBQ sauce is likely one of the most popular options, as it has been tried, true, and dependable to provide a great flavor and texture. But it’s time to switch things up. If you’re looking after your health, that is.
“Unfortunately, it also provides a lot of unnecessary sodium and fillers, and at 340 milligrams of sodium, this BBQ alone provides a sizable portion of your daily sodium recommendation,” says Richards.

Handle Your Meats With Care
Want to know the best way to enhance the natural flavour of your meats and proteins? Not sure which foods are ideal for infusing wood or smoke flavour? Trying to guess at what temperature to cook your meat or fishand when to remove it from the heat? Weve all been there. Thats why one of the most important grilling tips is to invest in a good meat thermometer. Otherwise, here are some guidelines:
- Burgers: Kosher salt alone is really all you need, but if you want your patty to pack some extra punch, this Classic Burger is seasoned with sweet paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, mustard powder and thyme. Cook to an internal temperature of 160°F.
- Steak: Maintaining the integrity of your meats is of utmost importance when it comes to tender steak cuts. Filet mignon, porterhouse and prime rib need only kosher salt and coarse ground pepper. As a general rule, the tougher the cut, the more heavy-handed you can be with your seasonings. You can even whisk together a marinade, like the one used on these sticky-sweet Korean BBQ Short Ribs. For medium-rare steak, cook to an internal temperature of 145°F.
Pro Tip: Want to infuse that coveted wood smoke flavour into your gas-grilled tenderloin? Wrap a generous handful of flavoured wood chips in a sheet of heavy-duty foil. Poke holes in the pouch, place over the flame, and allow the wood to smolder and release a kiss of smoke into the air. Flavours can range from applewood to cherrywood, mesquite to hickory, and more!
