Copycat Big Mac Sauce
Its probably safe to assume that most of us have had a McDonalds Big Mac burger at some point. Ive had a few, but to be honest, I would much rather have the Quarter Pounder with Bacon. But, put some Copycat Big Mac Sauce on that Quarter Pounder! Let me explain.
McDonalds is a treat that we very seldom take part in. In my 20s, I probably ate too much McDonalds. My ex wife and I would often pick up baby supplies at Walmart and enjoy a burger and fries combo before heading back home.
That was 18 years ago, but I still remember her order. It was the same thing every single time. She would order a Quarter Pounder Combo and substitute the mayonnaise with mac sauce. She always supersized her fries and got a supersized diet coke.
My order used to be a Double Cheeseburger until she convinced me to try the Quarter Pounder done her way. Almost 20 years later, Im still eating my burger the same way!
During the Covid lockdown, McKenna begged us to go to McDonalds. Shes a teen that has been missing her friends and school, and we wanted to cheer her up. So, we drove 30 minutes to the nearest drive-thru. We even convinced John.e to order something. He had a Fillet-O-Fish combo, while we both had you guess it! Quarter Pounders!
Tips For A Perfect Big Mac Sauce
Tip 1: I think this sauce is best used if chilled. Pop it in the fridge for a few hours, or better yet overnight, and allow all the ingredients to meld together.
Tip 2: You can use this sauce to marinate your chicken breasts and thighs. Simply marinate the chicken for a few hours, then bake or grill your protein.
Tip 3: Although some recipes call for French Dressing, I dont necessarily recommend it. Some might think it enhances the overall taste, but I think its overpowering.

How To Store The Special Big Mac Sauce
Trust my words, a taste of this special Mac Sauce would teach you that making plenty of this sauce is the only acceptable option! So, for future reference, heres how to serve, store, and freeze your sauce!
To serve: Although you can serve this sauce immediately, it is best to refrigerate it for a couple of hours or overnight. But pay attention! Dont keep it at room temperature for more than a couple of hours.
To store: Place the sauce in an airtight container, or a glass jar, and refrigerate it for about a week.
To freeze: I dont necessarily recommend freezing the sauce, because you can simply make it anytime! You can literally whip it out in a couple of minutes!

Big Mac Sauce Is Perfect On Burgers Fries And Salads With Just A Handful Of Basic Ingredients It’s Simple And Delicious
Big Mac Sauce is one of the reasons people buy the big mac, but little did you know, it’s so easy to make it! Most of the ingredients are probably already in your fridge and pantry!
Making Big Mac Sauce is so easy and it only contains a few ingredients. If you look at the ingredient list from McDonalds, there will be tons of ingredients that you won’t recognize like, ‘Spice Extractives, Polysorbate 80, Propylene Glycol Alginate, Sodium Benzoate , and Vegetable Protein,’ just to name a few. What are these things?!??!
I love to know what’s actually in the food I’m eating, so figuring out how to make Big Mac Sauce without all the scary ingredients was a must for me, and not too difficult.
I tried various recipes I found online, but nothing seemed quite right. After tweaking things multiple times, I found the best copycat big mac sauce recipe!
We Made Our Own Homemade Mcdonald’s And Yep Our Diy Big Mac Is Epic
Get ready to be blown away by your very own Big Mac Burger making skills.
And one of the things we’re missing the most is of course the humble Big Mac. From the bun to patty ratio, the perfectly melted cheese, and of course THE BIG MAC SAUCE, we can’t get enough of the burger.
Which is why we decided to recreate our very own Big Mac. And trust us, making one yourself is sooooo rewarding and SO worth it.
Big Mac Sauce
Of course, the most famous part of the Big Mac, is the special sauce. And while many of us thought the sauce was a secret, the recipe has actually been available for years. It consists of store-bought mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish and yellow mustard whisked together with vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. We’ve also added tomato ketchup to give it that salmon-y pink colour because special sauce doesn’t actually contain any ketchup – YEP!
Building The Burger
For four burgers, you need eight buns, because the Mac uses two bun bases and one bun top, along with two patties. As well as this, those patties are THIN, so we found that weighing out 50g of beef mince mixture, and spreading it into a 12cm ring mould creates that nice thin burger.
Trust us on this one…

Is Big Mac Sauce Thousand Island Dressing
McDonalds Big Mac Sauce is similar to Thousand Island dressing, but theyre not the same. Thousand Island dressing normally incorporates ketchup, while a lot of Big Mac Sauce recipes incorporate French dressing. French dressing gives it a bit of a tangier flavor than ketchup does.
This copycat recipe is made without French dressing because the tangy flavor comes from the mustard and optional white vinegar, and the spices add all the flavor.
What To Use Big Mac Sauce On
The classic way to use this sauce is on a burger to make your own Big Mac. Just smear it across the bottom bun before you add the burger patty and the rest of your toppings.
Even though I normally use it for burgers, it really tastes great on pretty much any sandwich. I love adding it to fried chicken sandwiches. Its not quite the same as a McChicken, but its still delicious!
You could also use it as a dipping sauce for dipping fries, chicken nuggets, or onion rings.
It even makes a delicious salad dressing. This is especially true if youre making a Big Mac salad. Just use it the way you would use Thousand Island Dressing.

Is Big Mac Sauce The Same As Thousand Island Dressing
I spent most of my life believing McDonald’s Special Sauce was simply Thousand Island dressing. Big Mac Sauce is not Thousand Island dressing. Thousand Island dressing requires tomatoes, which isn’t actually an ingredient in authentic Big Mac Sauce.
For this same reason, I also make my Big Mac Sauce without French dressing. You will find 95% of the Big Mac Sauce recipes on the web call for French dressing. Don’t be fooled. Though, I will admit the flavor is in the right ballpark, but, *spoiler alert*, it still tastes like French dressing.

But what is it about this sandwich? Is it the three layers of breadthe sesame seed bun itself? Is it the meatthe lettuce? I believe the secret lies within the sauce, and the sauce in combination with all those other aforementioned ingredients.
The Big Mac itself was first introduced in 1967 in the Pittsburgh area. It was finally released across the nation the following year. It was created by a franchisee by the name of Michael James Delligatti. He would go on to own 48 McDonalds branches. He passed away at the age of 98 in 2016.
Personally I think he was thus blessed with such a long life for bringing the Big Mac and therefore joy to the masses, but thats just me. God rest his soul. And talk about legacy! Now thats a culinary legacy to leave behind!
The original sauce was different according to the official McDonalds website however. It changed a few years after its inception and then was apparently tweaked multiple times and in the early 70s they were already at batch 72.
Batch 72 was a sauce that was created in order to be considered universaland all the franchises were to use it to avoid inconsistency as the site states.
It was tweaked again in 1991 and in 2004 was changed back to a former sauce. So you see, if you always thought the sauce tasted different from when you were a kid, you werent wrong. Take that anyone who thought you were crazy!
But againwe get to why was this sandwich is so successful.
