We’ve got plenty of grilling season left, but by this point in the summer I wouldn’t blame you for being in a little bit of a culinary rut. Even the best grilled meats and vegetables are going to get boring if you eat them over and over again. One of the easiest ways to breathe new life into grilled foods is to serve them with flavorful dipping sauces. I’m talking garlicky aioli for grilled asparagus, parsley-flecked chimichurri for steak, tamarind-spiked peanut sauce for chicken, and more. If you need a little inspiration to stay excited through Labor Day, we’ve rounded up 21 of our favorite cookout-friendly dipping sauces.

Air Fryer Potato Chips

Potato chips are a great pair to grilled cheese sandwiches, with the extra crunch and saltiness adding to the munchable deliciousness. This tried-and-true recipe requires very thin slices, so if you dont have one, heres an inexpensive mandolinTry this easy oven-baked recipe, which is less messy than its deep-fried version. Bbq Sauce Grilled Cheese

Even with a week off, trying to think of a grilled cheese idea for tonight was somewhat difficult. I hope that in the future the ideas come a little easier. I will be off next week it is my dads birthday and we will be going out to dinner. I do have an idea for then , which hopefully will be as good as tonights sandwich. I never thought BBQ sauce on a grilled cheese would be a good thing

In the days leading up to today, I began thinking about what sauce/condiment I could use for tonights grilled cheese. I had tried ketchup, which didnt really work, and mustard, which did work. I originally thought of peanut butter, but although I want to try something different, I am a little hesitant to try peanut butter of all things. Side note: I tried homemade cashew butter today and let me tell you, it was amazing. I have always been a fan of cashews so it was pretty much a given that I would like cashew butter. Maybe I will be daring to try cashew butter for a grilled cheese. What do you think? Let me know in the comments

But back to the present. I ended up on BBQ sauce. However, as my sous chef noted, straight BBQ sauce might be a little strange and a little too strong. Therefore, we decided to add ranch dressing, in addition to some garlic and jalapeno to the mix. It ended up turning out fantastic, even if there might have been too much of a kick. I would rather have it too spicy, as in the past, my sauces/condiments have been too tame for my tastes.

How To Make A Roux For Cheese Sauce

the GRILLED CHEESE I ate every other day for 2 years

The most important part of any good sauce is a roux which is, essentially, a cooked, thickened combination of butter and flour.

This will be the base of the sauce and it only takes a few minutes to whip up! Be sure to stir it constantly and cook the flour to rid of any starchy flavor before adding the other ingredients.

Grilled Cheese Method: Olive Oil

Rating: 7/10

About this method: While olive oil is common in a lot of kitchens, its not what most people reach for when cooking grilled cheese. One of the main draws for using olive oil is that it helps with browning but doesnt burn as easily as butter.

Results: The browning on this grilled cheese was great! The olive oil helped give both sides of the bread a lovely amount of crispiness, the cheese melted nicely, and there was a faint olive oil taste, but it wasnt overpowering. Although the flavor was great, it was a bit one dimensional, and therefore this wasnt the most interesting of all the sandwiches.

Cooking With The Heat Too High

It might be hard to accept, but a good grilled cheese requires patience. So resist turning the dial to high heat it wont cook your sandwich faster. Instead youll end up with burnt bread outside and unmelted, undercooked cheese inside.

Adding Too Much Cheese

I know, right is there really such a thing? But yes, when it comes to grilled cheese, there is such a thing as too much cheese. And when it happens, your sandwich goes from being delightfully melty with little oozes of cheese, to unevenly cooked cheese spilling out the sides of the bread in greasy gobs. Its not appetizing or enjoyable.

Follow this tip: This classic sandwich is all about finding just the right balance of toasty bread and melted cheese. Stick with a generous 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup of cheese, and youll be on your way to grilled cheese perfection.

Fried Grilled Cheese With Tangy Lemon Dipping Sauce

POSTED BY Meghan Y. ON September 18, 2013

Its all about cheesy comforting goodness today!

I have been sick this past week and all I have been able to eat is what my mom used to make me whenever I was sick. Grilled cheese was a big one for me growing up, particularly because it was the easiest thing for me to learn to make when I was young.

However when I realized the only cheese I had in my fridge was mozzarella, I decided to go a little outside the box and spice things up with some frying! Because really, who doesnt love fried cheesy goodness?

Just so you know, this is like grilled cheese on steroids. The gooey cheese is hidden inside a perfectly fried bread pocket. Then you go in for the sauce and at first you are like whoa check out that acidic savory masterpiece I just bit into and then you start getting that savory mouthful of cheese and fried bread and you cant stop yourself from going back for more of that lemony, buttery goodness.

It only took me a few moments to shove this sandwich, buttery sauce and all, directly in my face. I cant even handle how good this grilled cheese is.

Gah, please just excuse me while I fry up another sandwich and continue this downward spiral that is completely destroying my attempt to eat healthy.

So What Is The Best Way To Make A Grilled Cheese

My pursuit the best cooking fat for making grilled cheese resulted in a very tight race. I discovered benefits to several different methods. In the end, the best cooking fat for making grilled cheese is actually two fats combined: butter and mayonnaise. Read on to find out why this combination works so well and to learn more about other methods you might want to try.

Tips For Making Grilled Cheese Dippers

  • Dont use too much cheese. As you can see in the image on the skillet, some cheese will ooze out as you cook the grilled cheese dippers and thats perfectly fine. But you want to stick to about one ounce of cheese per slice of bread to limit a cheesy mess on the pan.
  • Use medium-low or low heat to melt the cheese without burning the bread. This is the ideal way to cook any grilled cheese so that you get a nice golden crust right when the cheese starts to melt.
  • Roll them different ways. You can roll them the way I show pictured from the long side, or you can also roll them up from corner to corner which makes for a longer grilled cheese roll-up.
  • Make them quicker by making a regular grilled cheese sandwich and then slicing vertically. They are perfect for dipping that way and great for little kids to dip into soup with less work for you.

Grilled Cheese Method: Butter

Rating: 6.5/10

About this method: I stuck to the basics with this method. I followed the steps described above, spreading one side of each slice of bread with 1/2 tablespoon of softened unsalted butter.

Results: This method is arguably the most common for making grilled cheese and its the way Ive always cooked grilled cheese myself. It wasnt bad, but it wasnt amazing either. The butter made the bread brown before the cheese had a chance to melt, and I actually set my smoke alarm off making the sandwich. Granted, my alarm may be sensitive, but I could definitely see wisps of smoke coming from the pan before I removed the lid. This wasnt super surprising, though, since butter on its own tends to burn easily. All in all, this method produced a sandwich that tasted good, but I had to deduct points for the overcooked bread and the smoky situation.

Grilled Cheese Animal Style

Sereneon

This classic grilled cheese has gone ANIMAL STYLE loaded with grilled onion and a special sauce!

Wow. Now that is a grilled cheese.

One of my all time favorite places to eat, In-N-Out. The sad news is, they are very limited in locations, there are not very many outside of the state of California. They are branching out more though, so maybe someday they will be everywhere! YAY!

The good news is, now that you have this recipe you can experience the taste in your own home!!

This grilled cheese is made in classic In-N-Out animal style with the grilled onions and that yummy to die for sauce. When I get my meal from In-N-Out I always get a few extra packets of that sauce. Even though my meal is already smothered and covered in cheese and sauce, I still need just a bit more of it.

I found the recipe for this sauce here from Chef in Training, she had it linked to another website, but sadly I couldnt pull up the link anymore.

The sauce is pretty much identical to In-N-Outs. And now that I know how to make it, I do believe I will be using it on many, many more things!

Now, my husband is going to tell you that this sandwich was his idea. I, however, am convinced this was MY idea. I honestly dont even remember which one of us came up with it but this sandwich turned out so bomb that neither of us will humble ourselves to give credit to the other.
