What Is Chipotle Bbq Sauce
As the name suggests, the key ingredient in the sauce is chipotle pepper. These are often made from ripened jalapeño chiles that have been smoked and dried. This gives them an unmistakable flavor completely different from the chiles used in most traditional BBQ sauces, such as the habanero.
Chipotle sauce can come in a few forms, with its most common form similar to mayonnaise. However, chipotle BBQ sauce contains more ketchup and chopped tomatoes to make it more similar to traditional barbecue sauce.
Is Chipotle Sauce Spicy
Just like jalapeños themselves, cans of chipotle in adobo will vary in spiciness from can to can. Theyre mild to medium in heat, but in this recipe, theyre definitely cooled down by the sour cream. For a less spicy sauce, remove the seeds from the chipotles before adding them to the food processor.
How Do I Store Chipotle Peppers
Most recipes only call for 1-2 chipotle peppers or 1-2 tablespoons of minced chipotle peppers so you are left with an open can of smoky, spicy goodness. I love spice, but that is a lot of chipotle peppers to use up before their fridge life expires! To make the most of your worthy investment, I suggest freezing chipotle peppers. They only take a few minutes to prep and are easy to pull out any time you need them.

Make Sure To Save Leftover Adobo Sauce
Most of our recipes call for a very small amount of adobo sauce, because its super potent! Many times we only use the adobo sauce, not the chipotle chilis. In this sauce, weve called for only 1 teaspoon of adobo sauce. You can freeze the remainder of the chipotle chile in adobo sauce for future use. See below for more recipes to use up the can!

What Is Adobo Sauce
Alex and I use adobo sauce all the time to bring a savory, smoky flavor to Mexican dishes. What is adobo sauce?
- Chipotles in adobo sauce are sold in most mainstream grocery stores here in the US, available next to the Mexican products.
- The small can includes chipotle chiles, which are smoked and dried jalapeños that then are rehydrated and canned in adobo sauce, a purée of tomato, vinegar, garlic, and some other spices.

Spice Rack Quick Fix: Chipotle Powder Or Smoked Paprika/cayenne Powder Mix
If you have chipotle powder available, its a good substitution for both heat and smokiness. If you dont, then opt for a smoked paprika and cayenne powder mix. Equal portions of these two spices will provide the smokiness youre looking for, along with the more pronounced heat youd expect from chipotle in adobo sauce. For both of these quick fixes, youre opting to leave out the tomato-based sauce, so there may be a slight alteration to the overall flavor of the meal.
What Is The Most Popular Meat At Chipotle
The Barbacoa has always been the juiciest and most tender Chipotle protein, and its still the juiciest, but the pollo asado is equally tender, and much more savory. Its perfectly marinated in a blend of zesty citrus and earthy achiote and black pepper, which truly makes it taste like nothing else at Chipotle.

Chipotle is easily recognizable thanks to its deep, smoky and spicy flavor profile. The smoky flavors come right from the chili pepper and are used regularly in Mexican cooking.
The combination of its smoky, spicy, and sweet flavors makes chipotle a perfect pepper to base a BBQ sauce around.
What also sets chipotle apart from regular BBQ sauces is its texture. Most recipes including ours contain chopped tomatoes, which can have a mouthfeel similar to salsa.

What Is Similar To Chipotle Paste
Tabasco is a popular brand of hot sauces. It was founded in 1868 by Edmund McIlhenny, who had been making pepper products since he immigrated from France in 1824. He started his company in Louisiana and named it after the town where he lived. In 1869, he moved the business to Avery Island, Louisiana. His son, Frank S. McIlhenny, took over running the company in 1899. In 1919, the company was sold to American Tobacco Company, which later became part of Liggett & Myers. In 1964, the McIlhennys bought back the rights to the name and began producing Tabasco Sauce again. Today, the company is owned by Grupo Ferrer International, Inc., based in Mexico City.

Is Chipotle Gluten Free
The chipotle peppers by themselves are gluten-free. So, if you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity , you can eat chipotle peppers with no issues. When buying chipotle peppers in adobo sauce be mindful that you are buying a brand that says it is gluten-free or does not have any added wheat flour or other glutinous ingredients.
This homemade chipotle sauce is also gluten-free , none of the other ingredients I use containe any gluten. Mayonnaise and sour cream dont typically contain gluten. The brand of cumin I use does not have gluten, but make sure to double check the brand you get because some spices contain anti-clumping agents that could possibly contain gluten.

Why This Is The Best Homemade Chipotle Sauce Recipe
Friends, here is what truly sets my Chipotle Sauce apart from other sauces and what really transforms it from great to seriously amazing taste that you always know:
Roasted garlic: I simply heat olive oil and add a few garlic cloves for a short time until it smells amazing and is golden browned. That really makes the difference, so good.
Brown sugar: adds such a delicious taste and contrast to the heat. You can of course use another sugar or maple syrup, but I find out brown sugar tastes best.
Creamy texture: as you can see in my step by step pictures this is a really rich and luxurious sauce that tastes so amazing with almost everything, yes.

What Are Chipotle Peppers In Adobo Sauce
The secret to this homemade sauce is chipotle peppers in adobo. But what is that exactly? Well, its a combination of things. Chipotle peppers are red jalapeños that have been smoked and dried. And the adobo is a velvety, tangy, and sweet sauce made from dried chili peppers.
Together, they make for a zesty, spicy, ridiculously flavorful pair, which is why theyre sold in jars that way.
You can use the chipotle peppers for an intense smoky heat. Or use a tablespoon of the sauce for a subtle, fiery sweetness. Needless to say, it makes for an extremely versatile pantry staple if you like adding a spice kick.

The sauce was thick enough to coat the chips without any dripping and had a hearty, rich mouthfeel. There was a noticeable kick to Chipotles Queso Blanco thanks to the three types of peppers included. Im not particularly good when it comes to heat level, so the Queso Blanco was approaching medium spicy for me.

What Is A Creamy Chipotle Sauce
Chipotle sauce is made from chipotle peppers in adobo sauce combined with Mexican spices, creamy dressings like mayonnaise and sour cream, combined a bit of lime juice. Its the best! This recipe is a copycat of one of our favorite Southern California restaurants Rubios. They use it on many of their dishes.
How Spicy Are Chipotle Peppers
Compared to cayenne pepper, chipotles are fairly mild. Cayenne is somewhere between 30k and 50k on the Scoville scale, which measures the intensity of hot peppers. Chipotle peppers only go between 2,000 and 8,500 on the Scoville scale. This is a pepper that is good for those who want to taste the flavor of the food and not just experience the heat of the pepper.
This easy chipotle sauce recipe really makes a difference in presentation, doesnt it? I promise you, if you love chipotle and spicy dishes, you will be using this easy chipotle sauce recipe on everything! I used plain yogurt instead of sour cream or all mayo to lighten it up but you could certainly use either of those if you dont have plain yogurt on hand. I keep mine in a squirt bottle in the fridge so I can give a quick drizzle to whatever dish I need some for its easier than having to grab a spoon or knife to spread it. Itll keep for a couple of weeks in the fridge but I doubt it will last that long!
- 1-2 tablespoons pureed chipotle pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Tomatillo Red Chili Salsa
Tomatillo red chili salsa is the spiciest sauce at Chipotle. It is made of tomatillos, Mexican chiles, Tabasco sauce, garlic, cumin, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. While you can make this salsa with regular tomatoes, using tomatillos adds a more unique and interesting flavor as well as a little bit of extra nutrition. They are chock full of antioxidants, beta carotene, and other nutrients.
Tomatillo red chili salsa is a great accompaniment to tacos, burrito bowls, and salads. Its also great for garnishing quesadillas, enchiladas, and burritos. The heat from the Tabasco sauce is balanced by the sweetness of the tomatillos, and the lemon zest adds a nice bitter and sour kick that goes well with your favorite Mexican dishes.

Vegetarian/vegan Easy Chipotle Sauce Options
If you want to experiment with making this sauce a vegan option, consider swapping the mayo and yogurt for vegan equivalents. If you choose to make your own vegan mayo using soy milk and oil, be sure to use a recipe that calls for some umami such as Dijon mustard or red wine vinegar.
If you choose vegan yogurt, try to make or choose a variety that has about as much sugar as the non-vegan plain yogurt to give the recipe more consistency.

What The Heck Is A Chipotle
I just recently learned this but a chipotle is a smoke-dried jalapeño pepper. It comes from the word chilpoctli which means smoked chili pepper.
A very popular pepper in Mexico, jalapeños that have been left on their plants at the end of the growing season turn bright red and lose a lot of their moisture. These are then picked to be used for making chipotle.
Placed into a smoker, the ripe jalapeños are smoked for several days until they lose their moisture and get prune like. I read that it takes 10 pounds of jalapeños to make 1 pound of chipotle. The heat of the chipotle has a lot to do with the heat of the jalapeño it comes from.
