Baby Back Ribs are sourced from the upper and lower area of the spine and ribs. These ribs tend to be smaller in size, and usually have more meat than Spare Ribs. The smaller size also makes these racks of ribs easier to handle and they fit well in the tin foil wraps described below.

Spare Ribs are taken from the belly area, and are generally less meaty than baby backs. They typically have more fat than baby backs, and are a larger rib. If you cant find baby backs, spare ribs can get the job done.

Short Ribs are beef ribs that include a rib portion along with a cut of chuck beef. Butchers typically cut short ribs a variety of ways, depending on how you are preparing or serving the ribs. We dont recommend using short ribs for this method!

We find that Costco usually has a great selection of meats and they are our go-to for purchasing these ribs. Typically well buy one 10-pound package that contains three long racks of baby backs. Depending on what else youre serving, this should easily satisfy 12+ people.

How To Make It

To make it, youll add your tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and chopped peaches to a medium saucepan set over medium heat. Give it a quick stir to combine it and then let it come to a low boil. As it boils, it will thicken and the chopped peaches will soften and infuse the bbq sauce with their sweet, peach flavor.

Talk about a heavenly aroma!

Allow the bbq sauce to continue to cook until the bbq sauce just coats the back of spoon, about 10 minutes. Then, stir in the peach preserves until well combined.

Remove the bbq sauce from the cooktop and let it cool slightly before tasting. Then, give it a taste and adjust to your preference.

At this point, it is ready to serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

We love this bbq sauce with so many dishes, but it is out of this world delicious with chicken and pork!

Ive provided the recipe for the amount of flavor and spice that I prefer. However, you can easily adjust the ingredients for what equals perfection for you and your family. Just give it a little taste test once it has cooked and cooled just a bit and adjust to how your family loves it.

I cant wait to hear how you like it.

How To Make The Best Bbq Sauce

  • Cook the BBQ Sauce. Whisk together all of the ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Allow the sauce to bubble and then reduce the heat and allow it to simmer for 10 minutes. This helps to deepen the flavors and thicken the sauce.
  • Serve. You can use this sauce immediately on ribs, chicken, pork, salads, and so much more!

    The Best Ribs For Baking

Youll commonly see two main types of ribs. Both can successfully be made in the oven.

    Spareribs

The first type is spareribs, which are also called St. Louis-style ribs . These ribs are larger and meatier than other varieties of ribs. They also tend to be fattier since they come from the ribs closer to the belly of the pig. Note that spareribs often require a longer cook time than baby back ribs.

    Baby Back Ribs

The second type of ribs is baby back ribs, also called loin back ribs. These ribs are smaller and leaner than spareribs and come from the ribs closer to the loin of the pig. Because their meat comes from the loin region, baby back ribs tend to be more tender and expensive than spareribs. Learn more about the different types of pork you can find at your local butcher.

How to make pork ribs with sticky barbecue sauce

If you are no longer living with your parents, you really should have a house sauce made without preservatives, additives, stabilizers, and emulsifiers, so that when your guests ask what brand of sauce is that? you can plunk a hand labeled bottle on the table. When they beg you for the recipe, you can then tell them Its a secret and mumble the old saw that ends in and then Id have to kill you.

Although the original KC sauces were probably vinegary, hot, and not sweet, similar to Arthur Bryants Original Barbeque Sauce , since the 1970s, the prototype has been KC Masterpiece tomato based, and sweet. The style has spread coast to coast and nowadays, when you say barbecue sauce, although there remain many regional and creative styles, most people think of the KC style.

The best have multiple sources of sweetness multiple sources of tartness multiple sources of heat and it gets layers of flavor from all the above as well as ketchup, Worcestershire, garlic, and salt. Most Kansas City sauces are brass bands with multiple layers of flavors, sweets, and heats. Because they are thick and tomatoey, they sit on top of the meat, not penetrating very far. For this reason you dont want to use too much. Just one or two layers, max. Let the meat shine through. Dont drown it in sauce.

Thats the idea behind my recipe. Its not KC Masterpiece, but it is a KC Classic.

    Kansas City Rib Sauce

In Kansas City, you typically get a thick tomato-based sauce that is sweet and often spicy. Our classic barbecue sauce is rich, dark in color, beautifully shiny on your favorite ribs, and also sticky and sweet.

Since this is a sweet sauce made with sugar, avoid your cooking temperature rising above 265 F since it will burn easily.

The beauty of this sauce base is that you can change it if youre in the mood. You can use honey or molasses instead of brown sugar, you can use Dijon mustard instead of the regular yellow mustard, you can use tomato sauce for some of the ketchup. There are lots of ways to vary the base.

And then you get to add other ingredients to deepen it more, things like Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, or all of the above!

Finally, optionally make it more complex by adding in additional spices like cumin, chili powder, or cayenne pepper. Really the options are endless. Soooo good. Youre going to love making this easy staple and doctoring it up in new ways.

The reason this simple sauce works is because of the flavor balance. You have salty and sweet flavors in the ketchup, more sweet from the brown sugar or honey, and then a good tang from the mustard. Its also great because the sugar content in the sauce makes it caramelize on food when its cooking.

For as long as I remember, Ive always loved my Mamas Coca-Cola BBQ sauce. It is what I grew up on her chicken, meatloaf and so many other dishes. But then, on a trip to South Carolina after my husband and I were married, I ventured over into the other side of BBQ sauces away from the red and sweet to the yellowish orange and tangy. While I wont say that it replaced the BBQ sauce that Ive loved since I was a little girl, I readily admit that when I now love to make all sorts of BBQ sauces at my house depending on what Im planning to serve. I also like to make a selection so that guests have an option.

    Ideas For Serving Bbq Sauce

  • I make up a batch of this sauce and leave it as a condiment on the side for people to spoon onto their plates or over meat as they please.
  • Ill use this homemade BBQ sauce as a baste for barbecue chicken or pork tenderloin. I spread it on once I put the meat on the grill, then again as I flip it to cook. Then again after its done cooking. It forms a nice crust around the meat and keeps it tender and juicy too.
  • Add a pork tenderloin, chicken breasts, ribs, whatever you like into your slow cooker along with a couple cups of this sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. Cook on low for 6-8 hours and pull the meat apart. Finger-licking good!

How to Make The BEST Bourbon BBQ Sauce + Crockpot Ribs!

Whiskey-based barbecue sauces have a long history in the South. Our sweet tomato-based sauce gets that great whiskey flavor, and the sugar and spices tame that bite. Make the sauce a few days in advance for it to have time for the flavors to blend and for the whiskey to mellow.

The recipe starts with simmering a cup of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and flavoring it with ketchup, brown sugar, vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, mustard, salt, and pepper. Remember that despite the cooking process, the sauce will retain about 40% of its alcohol, so serve the sauce on the side and offer an alternative to those who don’t wish to consume alcohol.

Keeps for 1 week in the fridge.

    • Kosher Salt Kosher salt is the preferred salt in this recipe. When testing, I tested using regular table salt as well as sea salt, but found that I greatly preferred the kosher salt in this recipe. If you substitute with another salt, please be sure to consult salt conversions and realize that it is not a 1 to 1 ratio with kosher salt.
    • Freshly Ground Black Pepper I prefer to use my own freshly ground black pepper in my seasoning blend, but you can of course use store-bought ground black pepper for this recipe as well.
    • Granulated Garlic while I prefer to use granulated garlic in this recipe, if you are in a pinch and only have garlic powder, you can use it as well. The flavor will change slightly, but it will still work. I provide the amount in the recipe below.

It only takes a few moments to blend together the salt, pepper, and garlic but saves so much time in the long run!

Just add all of the ingredients to a small bowl and stir until well combined. Then, transfer to an airtight spice jar or divide into multiple spice jars if youd like to share with friends and family!

How To Remove The Membrane/skin Off Baby Back Ribs

This is a controversial and personal step when cooking ribs. I grew up eating ribs with the skin left on and only started removing them about 10 years ago advice from a chef. Personally, I love the chewiness of the membrane when left on, BUT, I also love the ease of eating ribs with it removed.

    Go with what YOU love!

    • Turn ribs over with bone/rack-side facing up. Carefully slide a blunt knife under the membrane at one end of the rack.
    • Lift to loosen the membrane off of the bone.
    • Using a sheet of paper towel to hold onto the membrane, peel it off the back of the ribs.
    • It should come off in one piece.
