I totally get that. But last week I made some pork spare ribs in the oven, first with a dry rub, then some BBQ sauce baked on in the last 30 minutes and oh baby, was that a great thing to eat on a chilly winter day.

It was a little taste of summer, a little beacon of hope. Just what you need in the winter, at times. A reminder of the summer barbecue times ahead!

So I decided to share this homemade sauce recipe because maybe you want to make some ribs too!

And if you’ve never made your own BBQ sauce, it’s embarrassingly easy. There are ways to make it slightly more difficult, like using fresh garlic and onion, but here we’re just throwing a few things into a pot and simmering.

This is so much healthier than any sauce from the grocery store, which likely has a ton of added sugar . We had an old bottle of a popular BBQ sauce in the fridge and sugar is the FIRST ingredient! Yuck! That means it’s the ingredient used the most… Talk about high sugar content!

Homemade BBQ sauce is key when were throwing together weeknight dinner recipes during the year. When its warm enough to grill, we use it to baste chicken thighs almost once a week during the summer. During the winter, we use it on baked chicken legs, brush it on muffin tin meatloaves and use it to flavor healthy Sloppy Joes. Since we use it so much, its important to me that we have a healthy bbq sauce on hand. This recipe always does the trick!

The beauty of homemade bbq sauce is that you can adjust the spices to your liking. Want a little more spice? Sprinkle in extra cayenne pepper. Want a boozy Kentucky barbecue flavor? Add a few splashes of bourbon. Want it a little sweeter? Go ahead and add an extra tablespoon or two of maple syrup.

What To Serve With Barbecue Sauce:

BBQ is so versatile and it goes on so many things. For instance, you can serve any meat with this sauce, whatever you would put BBQ sauce on like steak, chicken, burgers, ribs, wings, pulled pork or whatever else. Then feel free to cook your meat inside the house in your oven but still the best way I like any BBQ sauce is to cook the meat on the grill outside.

You can even make a low carb pizza crust, a cauliflower pizza crust which is low carb and then top it off with your traditional BBQ Sauce and Chicken for a great pizza.
