Pulled BBQ Pork Cooked In A Slow Cooker | Homemade BBQ Sauce

For a classic pulled pork, a pork shoulder is the go-to. You might also see it referred to as a Boston Butt or pork butt. This will provide the moistest result for your pulled pork.

I personally prefer a boneless cut of pork, in my opinion, its a lot easier to work with. However, I have even used pork tenderloin in the past. It shreds well, it is just a leaner cut of pork, so the final dish will be a little dryer. However, once you add bbq sauce, its still delicious!

My motto is to use what youve got, but if you can, use a pork shoulder!

The Best Sauce To Cook Pulled Pork In

For this slow cooker pulled pork, I find it best to add in some cooking liquid and flavorings for maximum flavor. Here is what I like to add for the cooking:

  • BBQ sauce. Use a really good BBQ sauce that you love. We like KC Masterpiece. Gordons parents swear by Sweet Baby Rays. It really doesnt matter. As long as YOU like the taste of the BBQ sauce youre using, thats all that matters.
  • Yellow Onions. I love the flavor these give off. After hours of cooking, these just melt into the sauce leaving flavor behind.
  • Water. This acts as the majority of cooking liquid. I didnt love the way chicken broth or beef broth tasted, so I much prefer water.
  • Lots of Salt and Pepper. This helps anchor the flavor of the meat and helps create that sweet-savory mix that pulled pork is known for.

After the pork is completely cooked, I like adding in more bbq sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard and minced garlic. Oh mama, is it good!

Key Ingredients For Pulled Pork

  • Pork Roast: You can use a pork butt, sometimes referred to as pork shoulder roast, or a pork loin. For really tender, flavorful pulled pork, pork butt is best, as it is super marbled with fat and will get really tender. A pork loin won’t be as tender, but much less fatty and still delicious.
  • Dry Rub: This is a simple mixture of salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder that is rubbed onto the pork roast and adds incredible flavor to not only the meat but seasons the homemade barbecue sauce.
  • Homemade Barbecue Sauce: To cook the pork roast you need liquid. You could simply use apple juice, beer or stock, but I find adding in apple cider vinegar, tomato sauce, and honey will allow the pork to cook in a homemade barbecue sauce that adds so much flavor to your pulled pork.

Tips For The Best Pulled Pork

  • Shred pork. You can shred the pork on a cutting board using two forks. Ive also heard that you can add it to the bowl of a stand mixer and mix it with a paddle attachment to shred. Who knew?!
  • BBQ Sauce. I prefer making my own bbq sauce whenever possible, but you can of course use store-bought sauce if thats easier for you.
  • Drain pork. You will have some leftover juices after your bbq pork is cooked. You can either use tongs to grab your meat, or I find it easier to strain the pork. To do this, I place my strainer on top of a large bowl to catch the slow cooker contents so the fat doesnt go directly in my sink, then refrigerate the bowl and skim the fat later and ditch the rest of the juices in the sink sans fat.

Bbq Pulled Pork Recipe

If you are wondering why this post is lacking in my customary plethora of photos , I am minutes away from walking out the door to our week-long Mexican cruise and will just be getting back by the time you get this post .

But I had to post this bbq pulled pork recipe before I leave so you can sink your teeth into the sweet bbq tender pork sooner rather than later. Its that good.

Patrick s 50-minute work commute has its perks . He works within 10 minutes of his parents home, which means special days like when he brought home the best bbq pork I had ever devoured made by his mom, spruced up by his dad. Patrick was telling me how perfect the pork was on his drive home and even though Patrick never exaggerates when it comes to food he is my very honest food critic I still couldnt imagine just how good it was until I ate it for myself.

No bun, no sandwich, no distractions, just straight up pork, because it was straight up ah-mazing. After I had devoured every last bite of bbq pork, I knew I had to make it again soon. Very soon.

I suggest you start tomorrow.

What Cut Of Pork Should I Use To Make Texas Bbq Pulled Pork Recipe

This recipe calls for a 4-pound pork roast. The simple answer to what cut of pork should I use for this recipe is any pork roast cut will work for this versatile recipe. I would avoid a pork tenderloin. These cuts are generally very lean and dont have enough fat to render into succulent pulled pork.

The ideal pork roast for pulled pork is the pork shoulder. The pork shoulder is typically cut into two parts, the Boston butt, and the picnic roast. Pork shoulder has the optimum fat content that yields to create a tender, melty meat, but its essential you cook it slowly to allow the fat to render and the protein to break down properly.

Unlike brisket, pulled pork can be made from any fatty pork roast. Again, this recipe calls for a 4- pound pork roast, however, if feeding more people simply get a bigger roast. If you select a roast bigger than four pounds, no worries, the other ingredients remain the same. If you get overwhelmed at the store, simply ask at the butcher counter. Those guys love to talk meat.

Slow Cooker Barbecued Pulled Pork Sandwich

To make a pulled pork sandwich like the one in these photos, cut 6-inch lengths of a baguette in half lengthwise, then toast them in a hot skillet or on a grill for a few minutes until the cut sides of the bread are lightly browned. Pile the barbecue-sauced dressed shredded pork onto the sandwich.

If you want, you can top it with slaw, or in this case I decided to give the pork a hefty sprinkle of shredded cheese and run it under the broiler until it was a bit melty. Not super traditional, but delicious. You can use cheddar or any cheese that floats your boat .

Can I Use Pork Tenderloin For Pulled Pork

Yes, you can — but it’s not ideal. Pork tenderloin is a very lean cut of meat, which does best when cooked quickly at a higher temperature . It doesn’t lend itself as well to the low-and-slow cooking process, and instead has a tendency to become dry or tough when it’s cooked for too long.

That said, if you’re looking for a leaner cut of meat for pulled pork, then slow cooker pork tenderloin just might be your answer! It will have a different taste and texture than the pork shoulder , but if you cook it in the Crock Pot for about 8 hours on LOW, it should stay fairly moist.
