Almost Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce ~ Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe ~ Noreen’s Kitchen

There are quite a few ingredients for our copycat Sweet Baby Rays BBQ Sauce recipe, but they are still pretty simple and easy to find:

  • 1 1/4 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 tablespoon hickory liquid smoke
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in 1/8 cup cold water

Here are some kitchen supplies I recommend with this recipe:

Kinders Exxxtra Hot Bbq Sauce

As the XXX hints, Kinders EXXXtra Hot BBQ Sauce has hardcore heat. It cant be stressed enough that this sauce is very, very hot. After your first bite, youll be pleading for mercy within seconds. But then, just as quickly, the heat subsides enough for you to enjoy the truly wonderful blend of flavors simmering beneath the fire.

So many barbecue sauces that brag about being fiery hot only have one dimension and cant bring anything to the table beyond the overbearing heat. Kinders EXXXtra Hot BBQ Sauce is the exception. Yes, the crushed red peppers and the habanero peppers catch your attention but you will still be able to detect the brown sugar and hickory smoke. From fish tacos to hamburgers, this is the barbecue sauce to reach for when you want that kick.

Kinders history dates back to 1946 and three generations of family knowledge is used to create this spectacularly spicy yet balanced sauce.

Trader Joes Carolina Gold Barbeque Sauce

Give kudos to Trader Joes for not being bashful about stepping out of the box to create a one-of-a-kind barbecue sauce. This stuff is really unique and really good. While you can put it on a cheeseburger or a sub sandwich, it really stands out when used with chicken. If youre searching for a sauce to use for dipping chicken, this is it.

Trader Joes Carolina Gold Barbeque Sauce has a strong mustard base but it successfully blends in sweetness from molasses and a subtle hint of smoke. Besides chicken, this is the sauce to use on grilled vegetables. While its absolutely fine on pork and beef, you will appreciate what it can do to take your chicken and vegetables to the next level.

Unlike many of the competing barbecue sauces, Trader Joes found the optimal balance between being easy enough to pour yet still being thick and creamy enough to use as a dipping sauce.

Our Bbq Sauce Is Not Vegetarian Or Vegan

Worcestershire sauce adds depth, complexity and flavor to our Low FODMAP Sweet and Sticky BBQ Sauce and since it contains anchovies, the finished sauce is not vegan or vegetarian.

If you want to substitute, you could try soy sauce, but the finished overall flavor balance of the BBQ sauce will be different and not as good, in our opinion. But it is your choice.

Storing Your Low Sodium Barbecue Sauce

Sweet Baby Ray

When making this I will usually make a double or triple recipe. I use it on the meal I made it for and then use an old plastic ketchup squeeze bottle to store in. Works perfect. The sauce can then be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 month. Also, you can also freeze them for up to 6 months. Just leave a bit of space in the plastic bottle.

As always, please let me know how you like this recipe in the comments! I get motivated when I hear from you and am interested to learn about how you liked and served your Low Sodium Barbecue Sauce. And please leave a comment or rating and share any tips you might have.

How To Cook Little Smokies Without Barbecue Sauce

Some people are not a big fan of barbecue sauce. Just like my brother, he doesnt like dipping ribs in barbecue sauce. To some, it overpowers the taste of the meat.

Anyway, you can still enjoy this by browning it in a non-stick pan. If frozen, thaw in fridge. When you open the package, it is quite oily already so no need to add oil otherwise add 1 to 2 tablespoons oil.

Drain liquid. You can pat dry the smokies with paper towel before browning. I dont.

Heat oil over medium heat. Add smokies and brown for 1 to 2 minutes. Check if you need to lower your stove heat.

When done, transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to remove excess oil.

Thats it. You can still enjoy these babies without barbecue sauce.

Lets Talk Pineapple Fruit & Juice

The original Sweet Baby Rays and the copycat recipes contain pineapple juice. Pineapple juice has not been lab tested for FODMAPs.

Fresh oranges and freshly squeezed orange juice do not contain any FODMAPs according to Monash University .

On the app we can see that all of the commercially prepared orange juices do contain FODMAPs. Time and again we are shown and lab testing proves that processing can and usually does alter FODMAP content.

For this reason, I did not use commercially prepared pineapple juice as an ingredient in this recipe. Instead, I have puréed and strained fresh pineapple and calculated our serving size FODMAP load on what we know about fresh pineapple.

BTW fresh pineapple is low FODMAP in 1 cup amounts according to Monash University per serving, of course. FODMAP Friendly gives it a Pass at 150 g or 1 cup.

Rufus Teague Honey Sweet Bbq Sauce

According to the label, Rufus Teague made some barbecue sauce, put it in a jar, and shared it with his boys. It was so good, his boys pestered him until he made another batch. And from there, this sauce spread from Kansas City to the rest of the country. Give Rufus Teague Honey Sweet BBQ Sauce a taste and you too will be hankering for more once you run out.

Most barbecue sauces that try to incorporate honey are failures but this one is a home run. It has a sweet taste but the sweetness has depth due to the perfect mix of honey, brown sugar, white sugar, molasses, orange juice concentrate, and raisin paste. Its like an orchestra of heavenly nectar that everyone with a sweet tooth can enjoy.

The label also says Rufus Teague Honey Sweet BBQ Sauce is damn good. If two words were needed to describe this sauce, those were two wisely chosen words. Its impossible to disagree.

Grocery Store Barbecue Sauces Ranked Worst To First

Sweet Baby Ray

Barbecue sauce is as American as baseball and apple pie, particularly in the South. This condiment is not only a ketchup substitute, it can also be used as a marinade, sauce, or topping when barbecuing. From pulled pork to beef ribs and from smoked chicken to grilled vegetables, you can find this sauce on just about anything.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect about barbecue sauce is the variety. Depending on where you are in the South, the recipe for the local barbecue sauce will vary wildly.

In Memphis, its the molasses that takes center stage. In parts of the Carolinas, its a mopping sauce that can be used for dipping or as a baste for the meat. Other parts of the Carolinas are famous for adding mustard, Kansas City is known for its expert use of tomatoes, while Texas adds peppers to the mix to create spiciness.

This list of barbecue sauces takes a look at the store-bought varieties and ranks them, from worst to best. Fire up your grill, take out your meat, and be ready to select the best barbecue sauce for the job after reading this handy guide.

If you are a fan of Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce, you will love the taste of this made from scratch BBQ sauce!

With the first college football Saturday and Labor Day coming up in the next few days, I thought it might be a good time to post this homemade BBQ sauce.

Cattlemens Carolina Tangy Gold Bbq Sauce

Brought to you by the same company that blesses the world with Franks RedHot and Frenchs Classic Yellow Mustard, Cattlemens Carolina Tangy Gold BBQ Sauce will have your taste buds doing somersaults. The common criticism is that this barbecue sauce has too many good ingredients doing too much at the same time.

The first taste youll notice is the mustard, which arrives via No. 1 grade mustard seed and is given spiciness by aged red cayenne peppers and depth by paprika, onion, and garlic. Then, youll taste the sweetness of the sugar and the molasses. Finally, the smoky aftertaste is due to the natural smoke hickory flavoring.

All in all, Cattlemens Carolina Tangy Gold BBQ Sauce is an okay choice as long as you enjoy mustard being the dominant taste. If you prefer sweetness or tomato flavoring, look elsewhere. This sauce has tomato paste in it, but it definitely takes a backseat to the mustard and the rest of the competing flavors.

Sweet Baby Rays Barbecue Sauce

If youre addicted to sweets, go with Sweet Baby Rays. Its not particularly good, mind you, but at least it doesnt pretend to be something its not. Instead of attempting to mask or balance the sweetness, this sauce doubles down on it by combining high fructose corn syrup, molasses, regular corn syrup, white sugar, and pineapple juice concentrate. Honestly, the pineapple flavoring is a quite interesting addition that makes this barbecue sauce unique. If you like your barbecue sauce really, really sweet, you wont be too disappointed by this brand.

However, not only is Sweet Baby Rays Barbecue Sauce incredibly sweet, it also uses sodium benzoate as a preservative. Sodium benzoate may be linked to everything from ADHD, to obesity, allergies, and even cancer. So, if youre not concerned with that additive , and youre looking to add some exceedingly sweet barbecue sauce to your dinner plate, youve found the holy grail.

Now dont get me wrong, we like Original Sweet Baby Rays Barbecue Sauce around here. There are often coupons and sales on for Sweet Baby Rays too so I can get it at a good price. However, it contains high fructose corn syrup, artificial coloring, and a preservative. I definitely ingest my fair share of such ingredients, but its is nice to reduce or avoid them when I can.

My Tips For Making Barbecue Sauce

  • Measure the spices into a small bowl and whisk them together before adding it to the pan. This will ensure any hardened clumps are broken up.
  • Also, it is best to use a high side pot when boiling and simmering. This sauce really has a tendency to pop and spatter when it cooks!
  • Since barbecue sauce is really a regional and individual taste type of flavor, taste your sauce after it has simmered a bit. You can add more onion or garlic powder, sugar, vinegar or cayenne pepper to suit your particular taste, though I think this recipe has plenty of sweet taste.
  • If you like the sauce really thick, whisk in a teaspoon or two of cornstarch to the mix.
  • If Im not in a hurry, I like to let it simmer on very low for 15-20 minutes and really let the flavors meld.

With Low SodiumBarbecue Sauce you dont have to worry about how much you slather on your meal.I modeled this sauce after my favorite Sweet Baby Rays Original Sauce that Iused to get all the time.
