Theres A Lot Of Shrimp In The Sea
When buying shrimp there are many different varieties. To me its hard to beat gulf shrimp but Carolina also has some fantastic shellfish. When buying shrimp youll see different classifications of size like jumbo, large or medium. This can be very misleading, look for numbers like 21/25 or 16/20. This refers to the number of shrimp it takes to weight out to a pound. Always remember the bigger the number, the smaller the shrimp.
You may also see numbers like U-10 or U-15 on the shrimp packaging. This just means that its a specific number of shrimp per pound. I recommend 16/20 for shrimp cocktail because its not to big and not to small. If you want to really be fancy grab yourself some U-10 shrimp and your guests will be very impressed but your wallet not so much. 21/25 is as small as I would recommend for shrimp cocktail anything smaller than that I would only use for salads and stir fry. How Many Carbs In Cocktail Sauce
The quantities in the recipe are enough for two snack lunches of about 376 calories each and only around 11g of carbs each if I calculate this manually using Nutrionix. The calories are pretty much all in the avocado, the prawn and the mayo.
Whether you are on a keto diet or not, this is a great starter for any gathering. Make it part of your weekly keto meal plan.
But why not also try and serve the prawns or shrimps separately without the avocado on some fresh bread, in a sandwich or even as a canape on some crackers? The possibilities are endless.
I hope you enjoy trying this easy recipe. Please let me know how you get on in the comments section below!

How To Make The Best Gluten
To get that light, yet crunchy texture, using a combination of Super fine almond flour, parmesan cheese and plain pork rinds. In this recipe, Smoked Paprika is added, to give it just a hint of smoky flavor.
Take chunks of fresh Parmesan cheese , and put them in the food processor until they are finely ground into crumbs. Then add in the pork rinds, almond flour and any seasonings and continue grinding till I have a fine well combined powder-like breading.
But in several other recipes like Chicken Parmesan, Chicken Milanese, Mozzarella Sticks and Zucchini Fries, I use the same combination and add in other spices/herbs. For example, when making Italian breading or breadcrumbs, adding in Garlic Powder, Basil, Parsley and/or Oregano works really well!

Is Cocktail Sauce Keto
Store-bought cocktail sauce is NOT keto. I was blown away when we searched for a low carb cocktail sauce and realized they dont really exist.Who would have thought that traditional cocktail sauce would have so many carbs?!? Shrimp is very low carb, at .2 grams per 100 grams of shrimp and its a great source of protein. But it always comes down to what you are dipping it in.
Sugar Free Cocktail Sauce
The great thing about making your own cocktail sauce is you can control the quality of the ingredients. This super easy and delicious seafood sauce contains no sugar or added sweeteners, making it low carb, keto, and Whole30-compliant.
I skip the ketchup found in so many cocktail sauce recipes and use a combination of strained tomato sauce and tomato paste to get the right consistency and flavor. I found an Italian brand that comes packed in glass jars and contains just organic tomatoes for both the tomato sauce and the tomato paste.
Be sure to use a prepared horseradish that contains just horseradish and vinegar. I like to go pretty heavy on the horseradish, but you can always use less if you don’t like it as strong.
Lemon juice and sea salt are the only other ingredients in this paleo cocktail sauce. Freshly squeezed lemon juice makes a difference, so skip the bottled lemon juice. And of course, you can always add a dash of hot sauce if you want a little more heat.
This cocktail sauce is wonderful with smoked shrimp or roasted shrimp cocktail and a perfect complement to a classic raw bar platter of chilled shellfish. Try it with snow crab claws, clams, and oysters .
If you’re looking for a super easy and impressive appetizer for entertaining, you can’t go wrong with this shrimp cocktail sauce. No one will know it’s secretly sugar-free, keto, paleo, and Whole30!

If you want to order these in Spanish, or from a Mexican restaurant, you will likely see them on the menu as Coctel de Camarones, which literally translates to Cocktail of Shrimp.
A Mexican Shrimp Cocktail is sometimes served with chips at a restaurant, so keep that in mind if you’re living a Keto lifestyle and want to avoid those carbs. Additionally, if you’re serving these to non-keto guests, you may want to serve it with some chips in case they want to eat them that way as well.
How To Make Low Carb Cocktail Sauce
To make this keto cocktail sauce, simply mix the two ingredients together.
For about 1lb of shrimp to serve four as an appetizer, I estimate you need around half a cup of ketchup. Start by adding one teaspoon of horseradish, do a taste test, and add more if needed. You shouldn’t need any salt or pepper for this recipe.
And remember, even if you finished ALL the sauce on your own that would either work out as zero net carbs or 8g net carbs, depending on which ketchup you use!

If youre no stranger to the blog, then you know that I have a slight passion for sauces! Sauces are the peanut butter to my jelly, the strawberry jelly to my donut, the cheese to my macaroniyou get the idea! A few favorites include my homemade buffalo sauce, 2-ingredient BBQ sauce, and this honey Sriracha sauce.
When I can, I always prefer homemade sauces to store-bought. Not only are they more flavorful, but there are so many unnecessary add-ons in the premade options. I want to know exactly what Im feeding my family, and the best way to do that is to make my sauces myself.
This cocktail sauce is fresh, easy to make, keto, and horseradish-free. You can use it on seafood like shrimp, and I enjoy using it on other dishes too . Grab your apron and head to your kitchen. Homemade cocktail sauce without horseradish, coming right up!

Keto Friendly Tomato Sauce
In order to make this keto prawn cocktail sauce, you will need a keto-friendly tomato sauce. We have a few different favourite keto-friendly tomato sauces that we like to use.
For ease of access and buying we like to have the Heinz low sugar tomato sauce in the cupboard. It is easy to find at both Coles and Woolworths in the same section as the regular tomato sauce. Another option at the supermarket is the Celebrate Health tomato sauce. This one can only be found at Coles.
We also love the options available at Low Carb Emporium. Our favourite keto tomato sauce from Low Carb Emporium is the Good Sauce tomato sauce. We just love the flavour and the sweetener is monkfruit so a win win for us. Some of the other good keto tomato sauce options available are Richards Country Kitchen, and Primal Kitchens.
We are so lucky in Australia now to have access to some wonderful low carb options through Low Carb Emporium and that the local supermarkets are starting to stock more and more keto friendly options. Lets Talk About Horseradish
I used fresh horseradish root for this cocktail sauce but you can use your favorite brand of raw horseradish if youd prefer. If you choose to use fresh horseradish root, I have a few tips on how to work with it. When picking your horseradish root, choose one that is firm throughout and doesnt have soft spots. Youll want to use your horseradish root soon after buying it to keep it fresh and to help it maintain its heat level! You can use a potato peeler to peel your horseradish root. I grate my horseradish root by hand using one of the larger grate options. An important thing to know is that horseradish roots vary on their heat level. Youll want to use your grated horseradish root and make your cocktail sauce right away. The longer the horseradish sauce sets out on its own, the hotter it tends to get!

A Brief History Of The Shrimp Cocktail
The origin of shrimp, or prawn cocktail, is something of a mystery. Some claim a version of shrimp cocktail first appeared in The Epicurean, a cooking encyclopedia of sorts penned by Delmonicos chef Charles Ranhofer in 1893.
Others, particularly in the UK, credit British TV chef Fanny Cradock for its creation back in the 60s.
The dish enjoyed incredible popularity from the 1960s until the late 80s. It is far less popular today, but that makes it a welcome surprise to serve your guests.
It may have fallen out of favor, but it never fell out of flavor.

All Shrimp Are Not Created Equal
One of the biggest controversies surrounding shrimp is where or how the shrimp were raised. The major factor to consider when purchasing shrimp is whether they were farm-raised or wild-caught. Unfortunately, when purchasing shrimp at the grocery store it can be tough to know, for sure, where they came from.
Sometimes shrimp labeled as wild-caught may have actually been farm-raised. Not that farm-raised shrimp are necessarily all bad, it really just depends on the conditions under which they were raised and what they were fed. Best case scenario, find a seafood market in your area with a good reputation and ask questions about the seafood youre interested in.

Keto Shrimp Cocktail Sauce
This prawn keto seafood sauce is so easy to make. All the ingredients I have in my pantry, and the sauce can be put together in a few minutes. Nothing fancy, no cooking involved, just mixing.
You can use it to serve with other seafood as well like langoustines or crayfish if you have them available.
The sauce is also nicely keto as most of the ingredients are keto-friendly. Horseradish, Hellmanns Real mayonnaise, and tabasco are all keto-friendly.
Prawns or shrimp are also keto-friendly. Worcestershire sauce and tomato puree are slightly less so, but in these small quantities, needed for the taste profile, they should not upset your ketosis.
But with the addition of the delicious Avocado fruit, containing loads of healthy monounsaturated fatty acids and fiber, this combination gives you a great keto meal. And certainly one you will want to repeat over and over, as who can resist this delicious meal?
Often, the original sauce that accompanied the ubiquitous prawn cocktail in the 1970s would be known as a Marie Rose sauce. This would often be a simple mayonnaise and tomato ketchup mixture and there are quite a few websites out there discussing the origins of this name and the sauce.
As most of them disagree with each other, I am not going to get into that argument, except to say that THIS sauce, with horseradish, is the perfect Marie Rose sauce and what I believe it is meant to taste like !
