Quick Tips For Best Results
- Use a blender to get the sauce smooth rather than an immersion blender or by hand if you can. Although if youd rather use an immersion blender, place all the ingredients in a saucepan and use the immersion blender once the pear is soft.
- If the sauce is not as thick as youd like , mix a little cornstarch into water and whisk into the sauce over high heat.
- Although you can use this sticky sauce right away, I like to put it in the fridge overnight.
- Use a low sodium soy sauce or try a low sodium Korean or Japanese soy sauce. Since theres so much soy sauce in this BBQ sauce, the results can be quite salty if you dont. You can always add more salt after if youd like.

- This sauce is a bit sweet and spicy, but if youd like it spicier you can add red pepper flakes or sriracha

I received some sample Lee Kum Kee products for review purposes, and the first one I tried was one of the most popular Asian sauces, hoisin, which I made into a delicious chicken, broccoli and onion stir fry. We loved the taste of Lee Kum Kee hoisin sauce, and the dish also warmed over wonderfully well the next day for lunch.

Korean Bbq Sauce Ingredients
- Soy Sauce I like to use a low sodium soy sauce, but you could use your favorite. Theres quite a bit of salt in this recipe as-is so Id stick with the low sodium if you can. You could also use a Japanese tamari sauce or other Asian soy sauce equivalent if you have a favorite.
- Fresh Asian pear An Asian pear is a little different than a regular pear, but if you cant find it, you could substitute a pear or even an apple.
- Dark brown sugar I like the taste of dark brown sugar for this barbecue sauce but you could use light brown sugar.
- Chili Garlic Sauce You should be able to find Chili Garlic Sauce at your local grocery store in the Asian food section.
- Rice Vinegar You should also be able to find Rice Vinegar at most local grocery stores in the Asian food section.
- Garlic Fresh cloves work best.
- Ginger paste You can generally find ginger paste in a tube in the refrigerated produce section at your grocery store. Or substitute a little fresh ginger which would be even better but a little more work.
- Sesame oil A little sesame oil goes a long way and gives great flavor. I like to use toasted sesame oil.
- Black pepper Just a little to taste.
- Green onion I used both the white and green part of the onion.
Once you have all your ingredients together, the BBQ sauce doesnt take that long to make.

The Sauce That Was Made By Accident
History indicates that Lee Kum Kee who is the founder of Lee Kum Kee made the first oyster sauce by accident. He used to love cooking oysters for his guests, but, one day he placed the oysters on the heat source then forgot to turn off the stove as he was cooking. This was because he was engaged in other activities.
Suddenly, he smelled a strong fragrance coming from his kitchen and was afraid that he had overcooked the oysters so he rushed to the kitchen. To his utter amazement, he found a layer of thick brown paste on his wok which tasted so right. Its this that saw the rise of oyster sauce.

Oyster sauce stands alone! With the shake of a bottle, I can bless just about any pile of meat and vegetables with layers of complex salty-sweet umami flavor. What would Phat Sii Krong Neua or this Chicken and Corn Stir-Fry be without a dollop of the good stuff? And just THINKING about going back to spaghetti sans oyster sauce gets me all grumpy face emoji.
Yet, what is this magical brown sauce? Is it actually made of, well, oysters? And how can one start deploying it at home?
For starters, oyster sauce is believed to have been invented totally by accident. In 1888 Chinese food stall operator Lee Kum Sheung left a pot of oyster soup on to simmer for so long that it cooked down into a thick brown paste. Sheung took a cheeky taste, not wanting to waste a full pot of food, and realized his caramelized concoction was rich, super savory, and perfectly delicious. So he called it oyster sauce and started serving it to his customers as a seasoning before going on to package and sell it under the now-iconic Lee Kum Kee Asian sauce empire.
Uses For Korean Bbq Sauce
- Stir-fry mix the sauce with some rice and meat and/or vegetables.

I used gluten-free pizza crust mix to prepare this pizza, but you can use any pizza dough of your choosing.
I used mozarella cheese, curry-spiced chicken, red and orange bell pepper, green onion, cilantro, chopped almonds, and sesame seeds for the topping vibes.
You can add, subtract, multiply, divide your favorite veggies , replace the chicken with shrimp , substitute chopped peanuts for the almonds, and/or whip up a crazy sexy cool peanut sauce for dipping your Thai BBQ Chicken Pizza adventure.
Not a fan of cilantro? Omit it! You can even add fresh Thai basil leaves to the pizza once it comes out of the oven for some herb infusion.
For the chicken portion of this recipe, I sliced a boneless skinless chicken breast into strips and cooked it in coconut oil and curry powder on the stove top with a pinch of sea salt. This simple concoction makes for suuuuper flavorful chicken, adding to the Thai essence of the whole experience.
